Retrograde amnesia following inhibition of cerebral protein synthesis has generally been explained as either a failure of consolidation or impairment of a retrieval mechanism. Major evidence for the retrieval hypothesis is provided by studies which utilize a reminder (usually footshock) to attenuate the effect of the protein inhibitor. To examine this question, mice were injected subcutaneously with anisomycin (1 mg/animal, 7 mg/animal, or 1 mg/animal every 2 hr x 7) and given one training trial in a passive avoidance box. All animals received a single retention test on each of four consecutiv

A young woman with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) had an isolated trigeminal sensory neuropathy as an early manifestation of the disease. Raynaud phenomenon occurred almost synchronously with the onset of trigeminal neuropathy and was followed by myositis, diffuse hand swelling, synovitis, and increased ribonucleoprotein antibody. Mixed connective tissue disease has overlapping features of systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, and polymyositis, and is differentiated from them by high-titer antibody to ribonucleoprotein.

Chronic or intermittent extravasations of blood into the subarachnoid space, and dissemination of heme by circulating cerebrospinal fluid, are the only established causes of superficial siderosis of the central nervous system (CNS). We studied the autopsy tissues of nine patients by iron histochemistry, immunocytochemistry, single- and double-label immunofluorescence, electron microscopy of ferritin, and high-definition X-ray fluorescence. In one case, frozen brain tissue was available for quantitative assay of total iron and ferritin. Siderotic tissues showed extensive deposits of iron and fe

Thermoregulation is essential for survival in homeothermic animals. Vagal sensory nerves are well known to detect visceral signals and regulate feeding and metabolic functions, but their role in thermoregulation remains poorly understood. Cholecystokinin (CCK), a gut hormone released postprandially, activates vagal sensory nerves via CCK-A receptors (CCK-AR). Although exogenous CCK has been reported to induce thermogenesis in intrascapular brown adipose tissue (iBAT), whether this effect depends on vagal pathways and specific central circuits remains incompletely understood. Here, we assessed

BACKGROUND: A neuroma occurs when a regenerating transected peripheral nerve has no distal target to reinnervate. Symptomatic neuromas are a common cause of postamputation pain that can lead to substantial disability1-3. Regenerative peripheral nerve interface (RPNI) surgery may benefit patients through the use of free nonvascularized muscle grafts as physiologic targets for peripheral nerve reinnervation for mitigation of neuroma and postamputation pain.
DESCRIPTION: An RPNI is constructed by implanting the distal end of a transected peripheral nerve into a free nonvascularized skeletal musc

In this study, the physicochemical properties of microporous poly (epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) films and a composite material made of PCL and polylactic acid (PLA) blend were tested. Fabricated by solvent casting using dichloromethane, these ultra-thin films (60 +/- 5 microm in thickness) have a novel double-sided surface topography, i.e. a porous surface with pores 1-10 microm in diameter and a relatively smooth surface with nano-scaled texture. Porous surfaces were found to be associated with increased protein adsorption and the treatment of these polyester scaffolds with NaOH rendered them

Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a systemic rheumatic disease characterised by the infiltration of IgG4-positive plasma cells and swelling or hypertrophic lesions in various organs. IgG4-RD also involves optic lesions, which is known as IgG4-related ophthalmic disease (IgG4-ROD). IgG4-ROD involves the surrounding tissues, causing optic neuropathy when it affects the optic nerve. Impairment of the optic nerve is often progressive, with delayed diagnosis and treatment leading to permanent visual loss. However, optic neuropathy due to IgG4-RD is rare and the visual prognosis is uncl

Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage. There are different types of pain. Neuropathic pain is caused by a lesion or pathological condition of the somatosensory nervous system. One of the most well-known neuropathic pains is trigeminal neuralgia (TN). However, occipital neuralgia (ON) and glossopharyngeal neuralgia (GPN) exist. These three rare pathologies occur in a very small part of the global population. Combined hyperactive dysfunction syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by overactivity in different cranial nerves, TN

Capillary hemangiomas (CH) are benign proliferative vascular neoplasms commonly present in skin and soft tissues but rarely found intracranially. We describe a case of a 14-year-old male patient with histologically proven CH of the optic nerve, who underwent surgical resection of the lesion due to progressive visual loss. Imaging studies revealed a cystic-solid formation in the suprasellar region lateralized to the right and located above the pituitary gland. This case shows that CH may originate from the optic nerve, leading to its gradual compression and causing optic neuropathy. While the c

Cerebrovascular diseases mainly affect the blood supply of the brain, which has a high demand for oxygen and glucose for the nerve tissues to perform its nerve functions. Ischemic cerebrovascular disease can not only cause stroke, but is also associated with a high incidence of asymptomatic infarction and minimal bleeding that can lead to cognitive and behavioral changes. These changes ultimately manifest as vascular dementia or cognitive impairment. In clinical settings, ischemic cerebrovascular disease can be classified as a transient ischemic attack, reversible ischemic neurological deficit…

Cervical remodeling (CR) is a complex process, which, in part, is believed to be induced by physiological inflammation. Even though the female reproductive tissues are richly innervated by nerves from the parasympathetic pelvic autonomic ganglia, sensory dorsal root and nodose ganglia, their roles (neuronal factors) in this process (CR) has been largely attributed to sex steroid hormones, until recently. Here, we discuss the interaction between neuropeptides derived from peripheral nerves associated with uterine cervix and estrogen, and their likely impact on cervical remodeling. It is likely

The auriculotemporal nerve (ATN) is a branch of the mandibular nerve and has been implicated for some migraines and its role in Frey's syndrome is well known. An adult cadaver was found to have a duplicated ATN. The anterior trunk ascended as the superficial temporal artery and gave off the branches to the temporomandibular joint, parotid gland, external acoustic meatus and temporal region and communicated with a posterior trunk of the ATN. The posterior trunk ascended via the subcutaneous tissues 1 mm anterior to the auricle and gave off the branches to the anterior auricular region, temporal

Perineural spread of tumor is defined as extension of the primary tumor along tissues of the neural sheath (epineurium and perineurium) of a named nerve. Given the density of cranial nerves in the central skull base region and their extracranial communications, perineural tumor spread from a variety of sources can affect the central skull base region. Common malignancies with perineural tumor spread to central skull base include mucosal squamous cell carcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, and cutaneous malignancies including melanoma. The presence and extent of tumor spread influence selection o

The adrenoleukodystrophies (ALDs) are a group of metabolic disorders characterised by the accumulation of very long-chain fatty acids in all tissues. The two most frequent ALD phenotypes are adult-onset adrenomyeloneuropathy (AMN) and childhood cerebral ALD. Visual system involvement in the adult phenotype is well described as impairment of visual function and optic disc pallor on clinical examination accompanied by demyelination of the optic nerves seen on MRI. Thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer and ganglion cell death has been described in a neonatal form of ALD. Our patient provides

PC3 is an immediate early gene induced by nerve growth factor in PC12 cells, a cell line derived from a tumor of the adrenal medulla that undergoes neuronal differentiation in the presence of nerve growth factor. This induction is independent of new protein synthesis as it can occur in the presence of cycloheximide. PC3 is also induced with similar kinetics, but at lower levels, by membrane depolarization (both in vivo and in vitro) and epidermal growth factor. It is induced at much lower levels by fibroblast growth factor and interleukin 6. In vivo it is found expressed in tissues, such as br

Patients with bilateral paresis of the recurrent laryngeal nerves have primarily breathing difficulties. But on the other hand the common operations for widening the glottis produce voice problems. To overcome these difficulties a muscle stimulation device was developed, which is triggered by the inspiratory motion of the thorax. With this device impulses are transmitted by radiofrequency from a transmitter located outside the body to a receiver implanted into subcutaneous tissue of the neck and thence by electrode wires to the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle (PCA). In the dogs with one cut re

De-focused low energy extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) has been widely used in various clinical and experimental models for the treatment of painful conditions such as epicondylitis and plantar fascitis and also bone and wound healing. There is evidence that ESWT improves the metabolic activity of various cell types, e.g. chondrocytes and endothelial cells but little is known about its effects on nervous tissue. The aim of this study was to investigate whether ESWT improves the regeneration of injured nerves in an experimental rat model. Sprague-Dawley rats received an 8mm long homotop

BACKGROUND: Currently, up to 85% of the oral resection specimens have inadequate resection margins, of which the majority is located in the deeper soft tissue layers. The prognosis of patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) of the tongue is negatively affected by these inadequate surgical resections. Raman spectroscopy, an optical technique, can potentially be used for intra-operative evaluation of resection margins.
OBJECTIVE: To develop in vitro Raman spectroscopy-based tissue classification models that discriminate OCSCC of the tongue from (subepithelial) non-tumorous tis
