The structural changes of gray matter in Parkinson disease patients with mild cognitive impairments.

OBJECTIVES: Parkinson disease (PD) is associated with cognitive impairments. However, the underlying neural mechanism of cognitive impairments in PD is still not clear. This study aimed to investigate the anatomic alternations of gray matter in PD patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and their associations with neurocognitive measurements. METHODS: T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data were acquired from 23 PD patients with MCI, 23 PD patients without MCI, and 23 matched healthy controls. The MRI data were analyzed using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and surfaced-based mo

The "Iron Tale"- iron indices and handgrip strength in community-dwelling adults.

Sarcopenia is a precursor for physical frailty and is associated with adverse outcomes. Low handgrip strength (HGS) is one of the diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia. Multiple factors can influence muscle quality, including muscle composition, architecture, fat infiltration, fibrosis, excessive iron deposition, and neural activation. There is limited evidence on the association of iron and HGS in community-dwelling older adults. We aim to examine the association of HGS with iron indices and inflammation. The Healthy Older People Everyday study is a subset of the Singapore Population Health Stud

Insulin and liraglutide attenuate brain pathology in diabetic mice by enhancing the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway.

Insulin and liraglutide have been demonstrated to control blood glucose and exert neuroprotective effects. However, the impact of liraglutide or insulin alone or in combination on brain pathology in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and their underlying mechanisms are unclear. In the present study, diabetes mellitus (DM) was induced via intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin in mice and subsequently mice were treated with insulin, liraglutide, a combination of the two drugs or saline. Changes in body weight and blood glucose were assessed weekly. The pathological changes in the brain tissue

Contributions of Magnetoencephalography to Understanding Mechanisms of Generalized Epilepsies: Blurring the Boundary Between Focal and Generalized Epilepsies?

According to the latest operational 2017 ILAE classification of epileptic seizures, the generalized epileptic seizure is still conceptualized as "originating at some point within and rapidly engaging, bilaterally distributed networks." In contrast, the focal epileptic seizure is defined as "originating within networks limited to one hemisphere." Hence, one of the main concepts of "generalized" and "focal" epilepsy comes from EEG descriptions before the era of source localization, and a presumed simultaneous bilateral onset and bi-synchrony of epileptiform discharges remains a hallmark for gene

Biological Networks across Scales-The Theoretical and Empirical Foundations for Time-Varying Complex Networks that Connect Structure and Function across Levels of Biological Organization.

Many biological systems across scales of size and complexity exhibit a time-varying complex network structure that emerges and self-organizes as a result of interactions with the environment. Network interactions optimize some intrinsic cost functions that are unknown and involve for example energy efficiency, robustness, resilience, and frailty. A wide range of networks exist in biology, from gene regulatory networks important for organismal development, protein interaction networks that govern physiology and metabolism, and neural networks that store and convey information to networks of mic

Aberrant Developmental Patterns of Gamma-Band Response and Long-Range Communication Disruption in Youths With 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Brain oscillations play a pivotal role in synchronizing responses of local and global ensembles of neurons. Patients with schizophrenia exhibit impairments in oscillatory response, which are thought to stem from abnormal maturation during critical developmental stages. Studying individuals at genetic risk for psychosis, such as 22q11.2 deletion carriers, from childhood to adulthood may provide insights into developmental abnormalities. METHODS: The authors acquired 106 consecutive T1-weighted MR images and 40-Hz auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) with high-density (256 channel

Coexistence of chronic hyperalgesia and multilevel neuroinflammatory responses after experimental SCI: a systematic approach to profiling neuropathic pain.

BACKGROUND: People with spinal cord injury (SCI) frequently develop neuropathic pain (NP) that worsens disability and diminishes rehabilitation efficacy. Chronic NP is presently incurable due to poor understanding of underlying mechanisms. We hypothesized that multilocus neuroinflammation (NIF) might be a driver of SCI NP, and tested it by investigating whether NP coexisted with central NIF, neurotransmission (NTM), neuromodulation (NML) and neuroplasticity (NPL) changes post-SCI. METHODS: Female Sprague-Dawley rats (230-250 g) with T10 compression or laminectomy were evaluated for physical c

Exposure to either Bisphenol A or S Represents a Risk for Crucial Behaviors for Pup Survival, Such as Spontaneous Maternal Behavior in Mice.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal behavior depends on a multitude of factors, including environmental ones, such as Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs), which are increasingly attracting attention. Bisphenol A (BPA), an EDC present in plastic, is known to exert negative effects on maternal behavior. Bisphenol S (BPS), a BPA substitute, seems to share some endocrine disrupting properties. In this study, we focused on the analysis of the effects of low-dose (i.e., 4 µg/kg body weight/day, EFSA TDI for BPA) BPA or BPS exposure throughout pregnancy and lactation in mice. METHODS: We administered adult C57

A Novel CNN-TLSTM Approach for Dengue Disease Identification and Prevention using IoT-Fog Cloud Architecture.

One of the mosquito-borne pandemic viral infections is Dengue which is mostly transmitted to humans by the Aedes agypti or female Aedes albopictis mosquitoes. The dengue disease expansion is mainly due to the different factors such as climate change, socioeconomic factors, viral evolution, globalization, etc. The unavailability of certain antiviral therapy and specific vaccine increases the risk of the dengue disease spreading even further. This arises the need for a novel technique that overcomes the complexities associated with dengue disease prediction such as low reporting level, misclassi

Decreased Resting-State Functional Connectivity of Periaqueductal Gray in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy Comorbid With Migraine.

Objective: Patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) are at high risk for having a comorbid condition of migraine, and these two common diseases are proposed to have some shared pathophysiological mechanisms. Our recent study indicated the dysfunction of periaqueductal gray (PAG), a key pain-modulating structure, contributes to the development of pain hypersensitivity and epileptogenesis in epilepsy. This study is to investigate the functional connectivity of PAG network in epilepsy comorbid with migraine. Methods: Thirty-two patients with TLE, including 16 epilepsy patients without migraine

The Insula Is a Hub for Functional Brain Network in Patients With Anti-N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptor Encephalitis.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, imaging technologies have been rapidly evolving, with an emphasis on the characterization of brain structure changes and functional imaging in patients with autoimmune encephalitis. However, the neural basis of anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis and its linked cognitive decline is unclear. Our research aimed to assess changes in the functional brain network in patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis and whether these changes lead to cognitive impairment. METHODS: Twenty-one anti-NMDAR encephalitis patients and 22 age-, gender-, and education sta

Noise-induced neurophysiological alterations in the rat medial geniculate body and thalamocortical desynchronization by deep brain stimulation.

The thalamic medial geniculate body (MGB) is uniquely positioned within the neural tinnitus networks. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the MGB has been proposed as a possible novel treatment for tinnitus, yet mechanisms remain elusive. The aim of this study was to characterize neurophysiologic hallmarks in the MGB after noise exposure and to assess the neurophysiological effects of electrical stimulation of the MGB. Fourteen male Sprague-Dawley rats were included. Nine subjects were unilaterally exposed to a 16-kHz octave-band noise at 115 dB for 90 min, five received sham exposure. Single unit

Brain rhythm bursts are enhanced by multiplicative noise.

Many healthy and pathological brain rhythms, including beta and gamma rhythms and essential tremor, are suspected to be induced by noise. This yields randomly occurring, brief epochs of higher amplitude oscillatory activity known as "bursts," the statistics of which are important for proper neural function. Here, we consider a more realistic model with both multiplicative and additive noise instead of only additive noise, to understand how state-dependent fluctuations further affect rhythm induction. For illustrative purposes, we calibrate the model at the lower end of the beta band that relat
