Changes in plasma amino acids during conditioning therapy prior to bone marrow transplantation: Their relevance to antioxidant status.

Bone marrow transplant (BMT) recipients undergo a bimodal regimen of conditioning therapy, the precise prescription being dependent upon the primary disease of the individual patient. Generally, this treatment consists of chemotherapy and total body irradiation prior to transplantation, although the latter may or may not be included in the regimen. We have investigated amino acid metabolism and oxidant status in in a small series of BMT recipients before and after conditioning therapy.Plasma amino acids were measured by HPLC on 10 BMT recipients prior to commencing conditioning therapy, and ag

[Diagnostic and therapeutic assessment of liver trauma].

We have observed an increase in the frequency of hepatic trauma. They are very severe (44% of our group in IV-V stage), right hepatic lobe is the most frequently injured (22 patients), are associated with several lesions and in 20% of patients radical proceedings (parenchymal resection) were needed. A high incidence of associated lesions (24 patients), mainly thoracic and cranio-encephalic, have been observed. Therefore we have to improve the vital support measures, both in the accident place and in their transport, as quick and safe as possible, to hospital. We have at present better diagnost

Pharmacists' role in recognising medication-related oral health risks in aged care: a qualitative study of pharmacists' and dentists' perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Medication-related oral health complications, including salivary gland hypofunction, xerostomia, dental caries, candidiasis, mucosal injury, and swallowing difficulties, are common among older adults exposed to polypharmacy across aged-care and broader clinical practice contexts. Pharmacists are increasingly involved in medication management in residential aged care and may be well positioned to support the earlier recognition of medication-related oral health risks. Despite this, previous literature suggests that oral health is often insufficiently integrated into medication man

Dietary fiber in pediatric gastrointestinal health: a narrative review of evidence and challenges.

Dietary fiber plays a central role in pediatric gastrointestinal health; however, most children worldwide consume amounts well below recommended levels. Current pediatric guidelines from the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (2014) and global nutrition guidance from the World Health Organization recommend adequate dietary fiber intake as part of a balanced diet to support digestive health and prevent noncommunicable diseases. These recommendations generally correspond to daily fiber intake levels of approximately 14-31 g/day, or the practical rule

Weight management over the reproductive years for adult women living with obesity.

RECOMMENDATIONS These recommendations pertain to the management of weight over the reproductive years for adult women living with obesity (i.e. body mass index ≥30 kg/m2) with a singleton pregnancy, who are ≥18 years of age and do not have pre-existing diabetes or gestational diabetes. General advice. We recommend that healthcare providers (HCPs) should discuss weight management targets specific to the reproductive years with adult women living with obesity: pre-conception weight loss (Level 3, Grade C); gestational weight gain of 5 - 9 kg over the entire pregnancy (Level 4, Grade D); and post

"Mindset Matters": Perseverance, a balanced approach and structured support as facilitators of whole foods plant-based adoption.

Whole foods plant-based diets (WFPBD) show potential for preventing and addressing chronic diseases. However, concerns exist about their acceptability and feasibility. Research on firsthand WFPBD adoption experiences is limited but crucial for promoting dietary change. In a 12-week remotely delivered lifestyle modification program using an ad libitum WFPBD, twenty weight-loss seeking adults (ages 18-75) with overweight or obesity completed self-report surveys and semi-structured interviews via Zoom. The study aimed to explore: (1) experiences with WFPBD adoption; (2) factors that helped or hin

Geriatric assessment of patients treated for cutaneous head and neck malignancies in a tertiary referral center: Predictors of postoperative complications.

INTRODUCTION: As cutaneous head and neck malignancies are highly prevalent especially in older patients, the risk of surgical complications is substantial in this potentially vulnerable population. The objective of this study was to evaluate the value of geriatric assessment of this population with respect to postoperative complications. METHODS: Patients were prospectively included in OncoLifeS, a databiobank. Before surgery, patients underwent a geriatric assessment including multiple validated screening tools for frailty, comorbidity, polypharmacy, nutrition, functional status, social supp

Validation of predictive equations to assess energy expenditure in acute spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Acute spinal cord injury (SCI) is devastating with morbidities compounded by inadequate nutrition. The American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition recommends indirect calorimetry (IC) to evaluate energy needs in SCI because no predictive energy equations have been validated. We sought to determine the accuracy of predictive equations to predict measured energy expenditure (MEE). METHODS: A retrospective review was performed over 2 years. Patients 18 years or older with cervical SCI who received IC were included. Height, weight, maximum temperature and minute ventilation

Weight loss, wasting, and survival in HIV-positive patients: current strategies.

Wasting syndrome has been a common HIV-related condition reported in the United States. Three analyses from the Tufts Nutrition for Healthy Living study shed new light on the syndrome. Analysis of Cox proportional hazards models showed that losses in weight, fat-free mass, body cell mass, and fat mass, both from baseline weight and from weight at previous follow-up, were all significant indicators of mortality in patients with the HIV wasting syndrome. In the second analysis, the prevalence of 5% weight loss from the previous visit was shown to be 35% greater in the late HAART era, from 1998 t

Dataset documentation for responsible AI: analysis of suitability and usage for health datasets.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming healthcare, but also raising concerns about algorithmic biases that mostly stem from the training data. It is widely supported that transparent dataset documentation is key to enabling responsible AI development. Several standardized dataset documentation approaches have been established, such as Datasheet, Dataset Nutrition Label, Accountability Documentation, Healthsheet, and Data Card. However, their suitability and usage for health datasets remain unclear. In this Analysis, we compared all five approaches and evaluated their alignment wi

Shattered wholeness: Trauma, amputation, and the struggle for dignity in Gaza.

Amputation has become a defining injury of the genocide in Gaza, leaving thousands of civilians with permanent disabilities and shattered lives. This study explores the physical, social, and psychological impacts of conflict-related limb loss in Gaza. Thirty male amputees in Rafah's displaced camps were interviewed between January and March 2025. Thematic analysis revealed six key themes: Initial shock and pain; medical neglect; hunger and malnutrition; displacement and mobility barriers; loss of economic and social roles; and psychological trauma. Participants described how limited access to

Mucolipidosis type IV (MLIV) is a rare autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder caused by pathogenic variants in the MCOLN1 gene on chromosome 19. It is characterized by neurodevelopmental delay, progressive visual impairment, and gastrointestinal abnormalities. Here, we report a 10-year-old boy from Bahrain with MLIV who presented with global developmental delay, spastic quadriparesis, severe visual impairment, gastrointestinal manifestations, and persistent elevation of creatine kinase (CK). Serial brain MRI demonstrated delayed myelination, corpus callosum thinning, and periventricula

Adult respiratory distress syndrome: diagnosis and management.

ARDS yearly afflicts more than 150,000 people, many of whom are young and otherwise healthy and yet the mortality rate remains in excess of 60% to 70%. This high mortality has not yielded to the significant gains made in intensive care patient management and rapid advances in technology. Acute lung injury research in the past 15 to 20 years has greatly enhanced our understanding of the pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying this complicated disorder. Therapeutic goals should be aimed at total patient surveillance and support, including the psychosocial aspects of patient care. Fortunately, bas

Barriers and enablers to addressing smoking, nutrition, alcohol consumption, physical activity and gestational weight gain (SNAP-W) as part of antenatal care: A mixed methods systematic review.

BACKGROUND: International clinical guidelines recommend that smoking, nutrition, alcohol consumption, physical activity and gestational weight gain (SNAP-W) be addressed as part of routine antenatal care throughout pregnancy. However, guideline recommendations are poorly implemented, and few antenatal care recipients routinely receive the recommended care. There is a need to establish the determinants (barriers and enablers) to care delivery to inform strategies to improve implementation. This systematic review aimed to synthesize qualitative and quantitative evidence of the barriers and enabl
