Animal-type malignant melanoma associated with nevus of Ota in the orbit of a Japanese woman: a case report.

We present a patient with an animal-type malignant melanoma associated with the nevus of Ota in the orbit who showed a good prognosis after a combination of orbital extirpation, chemotherapy, stereotactic radiotherapy, and gamma knife. A 42-year-old Japanese woman presented with two tumors, one pathologically diagnosed as right-sided intraconal animal-type malignant melanoma and the other intracranially, presumed to be of the same pathogenesis and both were considered to have arisen from the nevus of Ota. She underwent an extirpation of the orbit, chemotherapy (DAV therapy, which is a combinat…

The anatomical relationships between the avian eye, orbit and sclerotic ring: implications for inferring activity patterns in extinct birds.

Activity pattern, or the time of day when an animal is awake and active, is highly associated with that animal's ecology. There are two prin … quantify the nature of the relationship between the avian eye and its associated bony anatomy, the orbit and the sclerotic ring; (2) to investigate how activity pattern is reflected in that bony anatomy; and (3) to identify how much bony anatomy is required to interpret activity pattern reliably for a bird that does not have the soft tissue available f …

Solitary fibrous tumor of the orbit: is it rare? Report of a case series and review of the literature.

PURPOSE: The real incidence of solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the orbit is unknown, but it seems that since it was first described in 1994, orbital SFT has been increasingly recognized. We believe that the orbital SFT is a relatively common tumor and that it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any orbital tumor. DESIGN: Interventional case series. PARTICIPANTS: Four new cases of orbital SFT. METHODS: Four patients affected by solitary fibrous tumor of the orbit are described. One patient experienced a recurrent SFT shortly after initial surgical excision performed elsewhe…

Flow cytometry in the diagnosis of lymphoproliferative lesions of the orbit and eye adnexa in fine needle aspiration biopsy.

The goal of the investigation was to evaluate the validity of routine cytology and flow cytometry in the differential diagnosis of lymphoproliferative disorders of the orbit and eye adnexa. The investigations were carried out on materials originating from fine needle aspiration biopsy performed in 14 patients, including 9 females and 5 males aged 31-81 years. Apart from routine cytology, cytometric studies were also performed. Based on cytology, non-Hodgkin's lymphomas were diagnosed in six patients, while one was suspected of NHL. In seven patients the diagnosis was ambivalent, since based on…

[Isolated blow out fracture of the medial wall of the orbit with medial rectus entrapment. Apropos of 3 cases].

We report three cases of isolated medial orbital wall blow out fracture with medial rectus entrapment. Few cases have been reported in the literature, predominantly in black people as in this paper. Predominance of this rare fracture in black population could be explained by an anatomic hypothesis based on racial origin. The diagnosis is often suggested by the medial rectus entrapment. Depending on the position of the incarceration in front of or behind the equator of the eyeball, the eye presents pseudo-Duane syndrome or exotropia with decreased adduction. The diagnosis is established by orbi…

Alveolar soft-part sarcoma of the orbit: a clinicopathologic analysis of seventeen cases and a review of the literature.

This is a clinicopathologic study of 17 cases of alveolar soft-part sarcoma of the orbit. The mean age of patients was 23 and the median was 18 (range, 11 months to 69 years); 13 patients (76.5 per cent) were women and four were men (ratio, 3.25:1). The right and left orbits were equally involved (eight patients each), and in one the laterality was not specified. Histologically, the tumors had a distinctive organoid pattern outlined by thin-walled capillaries and were composed of nests of large polyhedral cells with abundant, finely granular, acidophilic cytoplasm. Approximately two thirds of …

Revisiting bilateral bony orbital volumes comparison using 3D reconstruction in Korean adults: a reference study for orbital wall reconstruction, 3D printing, and navigation by mirroring.

BACKGROUND: Orbital wall fractures can result in changes to the bony orbital volume and soft tissue. Restoring the bony orbital and intraconal fat volumes is crucial to prevent posttraumatic enophthalmos and hypoglobus. We aimed to establish an evidence-based medical reference point for "mirroring" in orbital wall reconstruction, which incorporates three-dimensional (3D)-printing and navigation-assisted surgery, by comparing bilateral bony orbital volumes. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data obtained from 100 Korean adults who did not have orbital wall fractures, categorized by age …

Orbital Compartment Syndrome without Evidence of Orbital Mass or Ocular Compression After Pterional Craniotomy for Removal of Meningioma of the Frontal Lobe: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Orbital compartment syndrome (OCS) is a rare post operative complication of Neurosurgery. It presents typically acutely with loss of vision, loss of pupillary reaction, and limitation of extraocular movement. The etiology of OCS is most typically associated with increased pressure from a mass lesion in the orbit compromising the blood supply of orbital structures. Emergent bedside decompression of the orbit by lateral canthotomy is indicated to quickly treat OCS in an attempt to save visual acuity and extraocular function. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a 76-year-old male patient who…

Quantitative MR imaging of intra-orbital structures: Tissue-specific measurements and age dependency compared to extra-orbital structures using multispectral quantitative MR imaging.

The orbit can be affected by unique pathologic conditions and often requires MRI evaluation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the age-related changes in multiple intra-orbital structures using quantitative MRI (qMRI). Thirty-eight subjects (20 males, 18 females; ages 0.5-87 years) underwent MRI with a mixed turbo spin echo sequence. T1 and T2 measurements were obtained within ROI in 6 intra-orbital structures (medial and lateral rectus muscles, medial and lateral retrobulbar fat, lacrimal gland, and optic nerve), and compared with those of corresponding extra-orbital structures (ma…

Isolated enophthalmos: an uncommon gateway to orbital tumors in pediatrics: 9 month-old female presenting with isolated enophthalmos as the unique sign of a metastatic orbital tumor: a case report.

BACKGROUND: If extra-axial proptosis is by far the most common symptom of infantile malignant orbital tumors, enophthalmos is a rare and undocumented sign. We report the first case of a pediatric metastatic orbital tumor revealed by enophthalmos alone. CASE PRESENTATION: A 9-month-old girl was diagnosed with isolated right-sided enophthalmos. An orbital tumor was suspected and computed tomography undertaken showing osteolysis and periosteal reaction of orbital walls, malar bones and zygomatic arches. A Thoracic- abdominal CT scan confirmed a stage-4 neuroblastoma. CONCLUSION: Enophthalmos ca…

Origin of 13C NMR chemical shifts elucidated based on molecular orbital theory: paramagnetic contributions from orbital-to-orbital transitions for the pre-α, α, β, α-X, β-X and ipso-X effects, along with effects from characteristic bonds and groups.

13C NMR chemical shifts (δ(C)) were analysed via MO theory, together with the origin, using σ d(C), σ p(C) and σ t(C), where C4- was selected as the standard for the analysis since σ p(C: C4-) = 0 ppm. An excellent relationship was observed between σ d(C) and the charges on C for (C4+, C2+, C0, C2- and C4-) and (C4-, CH2 2-, CH3 - and CH4). However, such a relationship was not observed for the carbon species other than those above. The occupied-to-unoccupied orbital (ψ i →ψ a ) transitions were mainly employed for the analysis. The origin was explained by the pre-α, α, β, α-X, β-X and ipso-X e…

Multistate and dispersion-controlled symmetric/asymmetric photonic spin-orbit interactions via Ge2Sb2Te5 phase-change metasurfaces for double convolution vector holography.

Metasurfaces enable flexible manipulation of the polarization, phase, and amplitude of light by engineering subwavelength structures, providing a pivotal platform for exploring photonic spin-orbit interactions (PSOIs). Nevertheless, it commonly suffers from limited design degrees of freedom, i.e., supporting either symmetric PSOIs (SPSOIs) or asymmetric PSOIs (APSOIs) independently for one metasurface. Herein, we propose a reconfigurable phase-change metasurface with Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) that achieves multistate and dispersion-switchable SPSOI/APSOI dual-mode manipulation. By tuning the 3 crystalli…

Impact of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman interaction on the multiple Andreev reflections subharmonic gap structure in nanoscopic Josephson junctions.

Multiple Andreev reflections in voltage-biased Josephson junctions give rise to the subharmonic gap structure in the conductance, which is widely used to characterize transport properties and estimate the induced gap in the junctions. Here we theoretically investigate the evolution of the subharmonic gap structure in spinful Josephson junctions. Spin mixing introduced by the spin-orbit coupling opens avoided crossings in the dispersion relation of the leads, which, as we demonstrate, subsequently results in pronounced multiple Andreev reflection features in the conductance traces. We analyze h…

Molecular magnetic X-ray scattering with ultrashort X-ray free-electron lasers: from spin-orbit dynamics to Berry phase detection.

The emergence of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) with attosecond capabilities has opened unprecedented opportunities for probing ultrafas … processes. We demonstrate these capabilities through three paradigmatic examples: femtosecond spin-orbit beating in NO molecules, sub-femtosecond singlet-triplet oscillations in core-excited TiCl4, and Berry phase detection during CH2OH photodissociation. We connect this molecular framework to established condensed-matter magnetic X-ray techniques and …

The effects of Rashba spin-orbit and non-linear electron-phonon interactions on impurity-induced bound states in BCS superconductors.

We have theoretically studied the influence of linear, non-linear electron-phonon interactions and Rashba spin orbit interaction on formation of the localized magnetic moment and subgap Yu-Shiba-Rusinov bound state for a single-level quantum impurity embedded in an s-wave Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superconductor, modeled by single-impurity Anderson-Holstein Hamiltonian. We have used time-scale separation approach combined with Bogoliubov transformation and modified Lang-Firsov transformation to decouple quadratic and linear electron-phonon interactions present on impurity. Then we used the Kik…
