Posttreatment adjustment of clients who drop out early vs. late in treatment.

Symptom improvement from intake until 4 months later was assessed for 33 adult and 35 child psychotherapy drop-outs. Client ratings, therapist ratings, and symptom checklist changes were used as measures. Early drop-outs (one or two visits) were less well adjusted than late drop-outs (three or more visits) for both adults and children, though the difference was stronger for adults. Few differences were found between late drop-outs and completers. It was concluded that outcome researchers should use routinely the same procedures for assessing drop-outs' and completers' outcomes and that improve

Teacher ratings of DSM-III-R symptoms for the disruptive behavior disorders.

Ratings were collected on a rating scale comprised of the DSM-III-R diagnostic criteria for disruptive behavior disorders. Teacher ratings were obtained for 931 boys in regular classrooms in grades K through 8 from around North America. Means and standard deviations for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional-defiant disorder (ODD), and conduct disorder (CD) scales are reported by age. Frequencies of DSM-III-R symptoms are reported by age, and suggested diagnostic cutoffs are discussed. A factor analysis revealed three factors: one reflecting ODD and several CD symptoms,

Emotional responses to therapeutic abortion.

Healthy women who choose to terminate an unintended pregnancy in the first trimester have few serious or negative emotional consequences. Although a few women may have ambivalent feelings or feelings of guilt, most have a sense of relief and other positive reactions. However, the emotional response of a woman and her family to therapeutic abortion is complicated. A number of factors may help identify women at risk of emotional difficulty and depressive symptoms after abortion. Women who terminate their pregnancy during the second trimester, have a history of multiple abortions, have preexistin

The prevalence and correlates of behaviour problems in learning disabled children.

A retrospective cross sectional study of the prevalence of emotional problems among 502 learning disabled children seen in a specialized learning centre was conducted. Learning disabled children, diagnosed by an experienced clinician, were tested for emotional disturbances using the Child Behavior Checklist. The prevalence of behaviour problems among these children was 43%. This was much higher than the ten percent expected when this measure is used in a general population. There was no greater frequency of behaviour problems in children referred by teachers than in those referred by parents.

A comparative study on hair cortisol concentration among generalized anxiety disorder patients with and without alcohol dependence syndrome presenting to a tertiary care center: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) affects up to 6% of the population, which if not detected early and adequately treated will continue as a hidden impairment resulting in disability. AIM: The primary objective of the study is to assess the hair cortisol levels (HairF) in persons with GAD with and without alcohol dependence syndrome (ADS), and the secondary objective is to assess whether HairF can be used as a biomarker for assessment of GAD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This comparative study was done on 94 subjects (68 persons with GAD with or without ADS and 26 healthy controls) who

Assessing concordance of HIV risk behaviors collected by different surveillance systems.

OBJECTIVES: Assess concordance of assigned transmission category between National HIV Surveillance System (NHSS) and Medical Monitoring Project (MMP); assess persistence of behaviors by comparing transmission category to current behavior. DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of HIV surveillance data. METHODS: For 4034 participants in the 2016 MMP cycle, transmission category was assigned in NHSS and MMP by applying a hierarchy to acquisition risk behaviors and selecting the most likely risk behavior that led to HIV acquisition. We assessed concordance of transmission category between systems, the

Determining the frequency, kinds and cues of violence displayed by patients in an acute older person ward environment: findings from an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence is one of the most complex and significant occupational hazards experienced by nurses in healthcare settings. Verbal abuse and physical violence are particularly prevalent in older person assessment wards, owing to the prevalence of illnesses involving cognitive dysfunction; the high frequency and nature of contact with staff; and the frustration caused by high levels of disability. AIM: To determine the frequency, kinds and cues of violence displayed by patients towards nurses in an acute older person assessment ward environment using a structured observational

Does Delivery Mode Matter? A Randomised Controlled Trial of the Sleeping Sound Intervention: Predicting Sleep Outcomes in Children With ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: The effectiveness of behavioural interventions to improve sleep in children with ADHD has been demonstrated, although most treatments are conducted in-person, with limited evidence for paediatric telehealth approaches. Study 1 is a randomised controlled trial evaluating the ADHD Sleeping Sound intervention to compare outcomes between in-person and telehealth modalities. Study 2 examined whether baseline sleep problems and treatment response were predicted by baseline symptom presentation, attachment security, and family functioning. METHOD: Children aged 5 to 12 years (65.4% male)

Exploring the influence of personality and partner attachment on perinatal depression and anxiety.

PURPOSE: Perinatal depression and anxiety are prevalent complications affecting 18–26% of pregnancies worldwide. This study investigated the influence of personality traits and partner attachment styles on depressive and anxiety symptoms in Slovenian women. We compared the results longitudinally at two time points: during pregnancy and at 6 weeks postpartum. METHODS: A non-clinical sample of 325 women in their third trimester and a clinical sample of 49 women diagnosed with perinatal depression and/or anxiety were assessed during pregnancy and 6 weeks postpartum. We investigated how the person

Differences in assistive technology installed for people with dementia living at home who have wandering and safety risks.

BACKGROUND: Assistive Technology for people with dementia living at home is not meeting their care needs. Reasons for this may be due to limited understanding of variation in multiple characteristics of people with dementia including their safety and wandering risks, and how these affect their assistive technology requirements. This study therefore aimed to explore the possibility of grouping people with dementia according to data describing multiple person characteristics. Then to investigate the relationships between these groupings and installed Assistive Technology interventions. METHODS:

Maximal Walking Distance in Persons with a Lower Limb Amputation.

The distance one can walk at a time could be considered an important functional outcome in people with a lower limb amputation. In clinical practice, walking distance in daily life is based on self-report (SIGAM mobility grade (Special Interest Group in Amputee Medicine)), which is known to overestimate physical activity. The aim of this study was to assess the number of consecutive steps and walking bouts in persons with a lower limb amputation, using an accelerometer sensor. The number of consecutive steps was related to their SIGAM mobility grade and to the consecutive steps of age-matched

Biological variation of high sensitivity cardiac troponin-T in stable dialysis patients: implications for clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: Changes in high sensitivity cardiac troponin-T (hs-cTnT) concentrations may reflect either acute myocardial injury or biological variation. Distinguishing between these entities is essential to accurate diagnosis, however, the biological variation of hs-cTnT in dialysis population is currently unknown. We sought to estimate the within- and between-person coefficients of variation of hs-cTnT in stable dialysis patients, and derive the critical difference between measurements needed to exclude biological variation with 99% confidence. METHODS: Fifty-five prevalent haemo- and periton
