Ursodeoxycholic acid attenuates hepatotoxicity of multidrug treatment of mycobacterial infections: A prospective pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global health problem. The application of rifampicin-based regimens for antimycobacterial therapy is hampered by its marked hepatotoxicity which results in poor adherence and may contribute to prolonged therapy or treatment failure. The purpose of this prospective investigation was to evaluate the hepatoprotective effectiveness of oral ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) (250-500 mg TID) administered to TB- or non-TB mycobacterial (NTM)-infected patients with drug-induced hepatotoxicity and ongoing therapy. METHODS: Study population: During 2009-2017, 27 patien

Thromboelastometry: studying hemostatic profile in small for gestational age neonates-a pilot observational study.

Scarce data exists about the hemostatic status of small for gestational age (SGA) neonates. We aimed at evaluating the hemostatic profile of SGA neonates, using thromboelastometry (TEM). This is an observational study performed in a Greek tertiary General Hospital during an 18-month period. Ninety-three neonates were included in the study: 48 appropriate for gestational age weight (AGA) neonates and 45 SGA neonates Extrinsically activated TEM (ex-TEM) parameters, such as clotting time, clot formation time, amplitude recorded at 5 and 10 min, a angle, maximum clot firmness, lysis index at 60 mi

Evaluation of a Pilot Intervention to Reduce Mental Health and Addiction Stigma in Primary Care Settings.

Healthcare environments are not exempt from the impact of stigma against mental illness and addiction, which contributes to barriers to client access and appropriate treatment. To address this concern, healthcare organizations have a growing interest in mental illness and addiction anti-stigma anti-discrimination programming as part of their staff-wide professional development. Though standard interventions demonstrate effectiveness in the short and mid-term, the evidence for long-term change is inconclusive. A flexible, innovative intervention was developed in collaboration with community hea

Assessment of neopterin and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase activity in patients with seasonal influenza: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal influenza is an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Immune activation after stimulation with interferon-gamma leads to increased production of neopterin but also results in increased tryptophan catabolism through indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO). Our pilot study determined neopterin serum levels and IDO activity in patients with influenza infection and investigated whether neopterin is linked to clinical outcome parameters (mortality ≤30 days, acute cardiac events (ACE) length of hospitalization, ICU admission). METHODS: Neopterin concentrations were an

Foetal lung volumes in pregnant women who deliver very preterm: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Infants born preterm are at increased risk of pulmonary morbidity. The contribution of antenatal factors to impairments in lung structure/function has not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to compare standardized lung volumes from foetuses that were delivered <32 weeks' gestation with foetuses that were delivered >37 weeks. METHODS: Fourteen women who delivered <32 weeks gestation and 56 women who delivered >37 underwent a foetal MRI. Slice-volume reconstruction was then used and the foetal lungs were then segmented using multi-atlas approaches. Body volumes were calculated

Quantification of MRI T2-weighted High Signal Volume in Cystic Fibrosis: A Pilot Study.

Background In patients with cystic fibrosis (CF), pulmonary structures with high MRI T2 signal intensity relate to inflammatory changes in the lung and bronchi. These areas of pathologic abnormalities can serve as imaging biomarkers. The feasibility of automated quantification is unknown. Purpose To quantify the MRI T2 high-signal-intensity lung volume and T2-weighted volume-intensity product (VIP) by using a black-blood T2-weighted radial fast spin-echo sequence in participants with CF. Materials and Methods Healthy individuals and study participants with CF were prospectively enrolled betwee

Concomitant pulmonary vein isolation and percutaneous closure of atrial septal defects: A pilot project.

BACKGROUND: Patients with an atrial septal defect (ASD) are at increased risk of developing atrial fibrillation (AF). Currently percutaneous ASD closure is the preferred therapeutic strategy and although pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) for AF is feasible after ASD closure, the transseptal puncture can be technically challenging and probably increases the perioperative risk. A staged approach, with PVI several months before ASD closure, has been recommended for patients already scheduled for closure, but no data are available on combined procedures. PURPOSE: This pilot study evaluates the feasi

Selenium and stable mercury isotopes provide new insights into mercury toxicokinetics in pilot whales.

High exposures of mammalian species to inorganic mercury (HgII) and methylmercury (MeHg) have been associated with adverse effects on behavior and reproduction. Different mammalian species exhibit varying responses to similar external exposure levels, reflecting potential differences in Hg toxicokinetics. Here, we use Hg stable isotopes, total Hg, MeHg and selenium (Se) concentrations measured in multiple tissues of North Atlantic pilot whales (Globicephala melas) to investigate processes affecting the distribution and accumulation of HgII and MeHg. We find that simple mixing of two distinct i

Abdominal compartment syndrome monitoring in neonates with an acute abdomen - A pilot, retrospective, observational study.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) is a pathological increase of the intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) with dysfunction of one or more organs. There is lack of clarity in neonates regarding what intravesical pressure (IVP) value, a surrogate marker for IAP, indicates the need for intervention for ACS. METHODS: The medical records at a Children's Hospital NICU were reviewed to identify all neonates that had IVP/s monitored over a 10-year period (2008-2017). Demographic parameters, IVPs, and important clinical outcomes were obtained. Associations between IVP monitoring and clinical o
