Intraventricular hemorrhage is an uncommon manifestation of congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and has been described in preterm neonates. We discuss a term neonate, who was referred because of intracranial hemorrhage and hydrocephalous detected in the antenatal ultrasound. A 26-year-old woman developed fever, myalgias and headaches two weeks after having been scratched by a rat, which she kept as a pet. She had limited renal involvement and marginal pleocytosis in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). A 51-year-old man had just returned from a holiday with water sports activities and was admitted with fever, severe headaches, neck pain, myalgias and signs of acute renal failure and pleocytosis in the CSF. Toxoplasma gondii is an obligatory intracellular protozoon parasite that causes toxoplasmosis in humans and all warm-blooded animals. In this study, we aimed to investigate the presence of T. gondii DNA in a Eurasian badger (Meles meles) that was found dead in the wildlife area of Izmir. According to the results of real time polymerase chain reaction, T. gondii REP gene was found to be positive in the Eurasian badger brain homogenate. In conclusion, Eurasian badger, a known carnivore, can be a potential source of toxoplasmosis in the natural settings of İzmir, Turkey.

Here, we report a case of rhinocerebral zygomycosis due to a Lichtheimia ramosa infection in a calf. A histopathological examination revealed that a fungus had invaded the brain through the olfactory nerves. Lichtheimia ramosa was detected by polymerase chain reaction analysis of DNA extracted from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples of the affected tissue. This study reports on two Hanwoo (a native Korean breed of cattle) calves, a 3- and 6-month-old presenting with diarrhea, anorexia and blindness. Ophthalmoscopic examination revealed bilateral papilledema in both calves. Reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction tests for bovine viral diarrhea virus, rotavirus and coronavirus were all negative. The levels of serum vitamin A in the two affected calves were 0.317 µg/dl and 0.481 µg/dl, respectively. These values are much lower than the normal vitamin A levels; therefore, the calves were diagnosed with hypovitaminosis A.

It is well known that Down's syndrome is a strong risk factor for mortality after Fontan operations. We performed two lung biopsies in a Down's syndrome patient who underwent staged Fontan operations. The pathological findings revealed severe pulmonary arterial hypertrophy and a quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction revealed the overexpression of endothelin and a decline in the eNOS level at the Fontan operation. Pericardial effusion is common disease and difficult to diagnose. Tuberculosis accounts for up to 4% of acute pericarditis and 7% of cardiac tamponade cases. Quick treatment can be lifesaving but requires accurate diagnosis. We report a case of a 65-year-old man who presented with a 3-week history of fever with chills, non-productive cough and dyspnea. The case was diagnosed by positivity of acid-fast staining, culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the aspirated pericardial fluid and treated promptly with antituberculosis drugs. The patient showed complete recovery.

Toxoplasmic encephalitis is a rare infectious complication in patients with hematological malignancy except for allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma is an uncommon tumor of the testes that usually presents as a hydrocele. After 6 months of a trip to Haiti, a 25-year-old healthy man presented with a 6-week history of a very slow progressive intermittent bilateral testicular pain and swelling. The biopsies in both testicles revealed the presence of a dead filarial parasite. Polymerase chain reaction products of the DNA from the biopsy were shown to have a 100% identity to Wuchereria bancrofti. Despite being uncommon in travelers, this presentation of W. bancrofti highlights the possibility of acquiring W. bancrofti during short-term trips to highly endemic regions of the world (i.e., Haiti).

A 2 year old fully immunized male with no personal history of chicken pox presented to the emergency department with a chief complaint of a rash for one week after returning from a hiking trip in a remote island in Canada.
