Mass violence and mental health--a view from forensic psychiatry.

The objectives of this paper are to develop insights into the mind of the terrorist, to conduct a review of health impacts on the health of populations, especially from the point of view of mental health impacts caused by terrorist attacks and to discern the role to be played by forensic psychiatry in emergencies caused by terrorist actions. These objectives are developed at the population level and at the individual level from the point of view of a description of the terrorist and of victim's need for forensic intervention and representation. On entrance, the paper starts with a general fram

Methylmercury in the hair of subsistence food users in a rural Alaskan village.

The level of methylmercury in the hair of 16 rural Alaskan subsistence food users from Napakiak, a small Yup'ik Eskimo village on the Kuskokwim River in southwest Alaska, was assessed. A non-subsistence population of 20 non-Yup'ik adults from the urban interior city of Fairbanks was used as a comparison group. The Napakiak Yup'ik had a mean methylmercury concentration in hair of 1.45 ppm with a range of 0.32-4.00 ppm, while the Fairbanks population had a mean concentration of 0.19 ppm with a range of 0.03 to 0.43 ppm in their hair. Comparison with an earlier study by Galster (1976) from this r

What affects the movement can be seen from the movement: Effects of optical information and dynamical constraints on movement production and perception.

IMPORTANCE: Over the past decades, the number of patients, especially in the older adult patient group, diagnosed with vestibular schwannoma (VS) has increased. Assuming that older adult patients have more comorbidities, a longer recovery period after surgery, a higher rate of surgical complications, and a higher mortality rate after VS surgery, a treatment strategy for this group of patients is warranted, based on clinical evidence on postsurgical survival. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the survival after diagnosis of a VS in patients 70 years and older, treated with either observation or surgery,

Effects of socioeconomic status on functional status and health-related quality of life in hip fracture patients.

UNLABELLED: What is known? Hip fractures are debilitating osteoporotic fractures that are increasingly pervasive in our aging population. SES has an overarching influence on health outcomes and well-being, having already been proven in other morbid diseases. What is new? Overall, this study demonstrates that hip fracture patients experience poorer perioperative quality of life at different time points based on SES, though both groups recuperate to attain comparable outcomes by 1 year. What is the impact? Our findings suggest that hip fracture prevention should be emphasised across all socioeco

Prevalence of premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) and its relationship with female reproductive factors in Iranian women: a cross-sectional study from the Persian (Shahedieh) cohort data.

BACKGROUND: In premature ovarian insufficiency, the cessation of menstruation, and cessation of ovarian function occurs before the age of 40, and this phenomenon is associated with many complications and problems for women. Since several factors can affect this situation, this study was conducted to determine the relationship between fertility history, and premature ovarian failure. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on the data of the first phase of cohort study, which was a sample of 10,000 people from an Iranian adult population (age: 35-70 years). 1276 women were included w

Robot-assisted surgery in elderly and very elderly population: our experience in oncologic and general surgery with literature review.

BACKGROUND: Although there is no agreement on a definition of elderly, commonly an age cutoff of ≥65 or 75 years is used. Nowadays most of malignancies requiring surgical treatment are diagnosed in old population. Comorbidities and frailty represent well-known problems during and after surgery in elderly patients. Minimally invasive surgery offers earlier postoperative mobilization, less blood loss, lower morbidity as well as reduction in hospital stay and as such represents an interesting and validated option for elderly population. Robot-assisted surgery is a recent improvement of convention

The Epidemiology of Upper Extremity Fractures in the United States, 2009.

BACKGROUND: No single epidemiological study of upper extremity fractures exists in the United States using data from all payers. Current epidemiological estimates are based on case series, foreign databases, or Medicare data, which are not representative of the entire US population. The objective of this project was to accurately describe the incidence of fractures of the upper extremity in a representative sample of the US population. METHODS: Using International Classification of Disease, Ninth Edition codes for patient visits reported in the 2009 State Emergency Department Database and the

Gut microbial diversity and candidate keystone taxa in Indian tribes: Insights across lifestyle-ecological continuum and health associations.

Despite the critical role of the gut microbiome in host physiology and health, it remains poorly characterized in Indigenous populations undergoing rapid acculturation. This study presents high-resolution, whole-genome metagenomic profiling of gut microbiota from five Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) of Southern India, Irula, Jenu Kuruba, Kurumba, Chenchu, and Konda Savara, spanning distinct ecological zones and cultural transitions. Using an ecology-lifestyle continuum framework, we investigated taxonomic and functional diversity with a focus on identifying computationally inferr

Effects of the Community Paramedicine at Clinic (CP@clinic) program on the health behaviours of older adults residing in social housing: secondary outcomes of a cluster-randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Community-dwelling, low-income older adults who reside in social housing are a vulnerable population with high rates of poor health behaviours that contribute to chronic health conditions and adverse health outcomes. This study investigates the impact of the Community Paramedicine at Clinic (CP@clinic), a chronic disease prevention, management, and health promotion program, on the health behaviours of this population. METHODS: An open-label, pragmatic cluster-randomized controlled trial with parallel intervention and control groups was conducted for one-year within 30 social housi

Receipt of social services intervention in childhood, educational attainment and emergency hospital admissions: longitudinal analyses of national administrative health, social care, and education data in Wales, UK.

BACKGROUND: Research consistently finds poorer health and educational outcomes for children who have experienced out-of-home care relative to the general population. Few studies have explored differences between those in care and those in receipt of intervention from social services but not in care. Children receiving social services interventions often experience Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), and deprivation, which are known to negatively impact outcomes. We aimed to estimate the association of different social services interventions with educational outcomes and hospital admissions,

Incidence of Cerebral Cavernous Malformation-Related Epilepsy in Children: A Single Center Survey.

Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) are rare developmental cerebrovascular malformations. The risk of epilepsy is high in patients with CCMs, but the incidence of epilepsy has not been reported in a pure pediatric population. We herein present 14 pediatric cases of CCMs, including five with CCM-related epilepsy, and examine the incidence of CCM-related epilepsy in this pediatric population.  Methods: Pediatric patients with CCMs who visited our Hospital between November 1, 2001, to September 31, 2020, were retrospectively screened for inclusion, and 14 were enrolled.  Results: Fourteen enr

Streptococcus pneumoniae genomic datasets from an Indian population describing pre-vaccine evolutionary epidemiology using a whole genome sequencing approach.

Globally, India has a high burden of pneumococcal disease, and pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) has been rolled out in different phases across the country since May 2017 in the national infant immunization programme (NIP). To provide a baseline for assessing the impact of the vaccine on circulating pneumococci in India, genetic characterization of pneumococcal isolates detected prior to introduction of PCV would be helpful. Here we present a population genomic study of 480 Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates collected across India and from all age groups before vaccine introduction (2009-201
