OBJECTIVE: To describe the cytomorphologic features of leukemic cells in lymph node aspiration material.
STUDY DESIGN: We studied lymph node fine needle aspiration (FNA) smears of 36 leukemic patients. In 23 cases the lymphadenopathy was noticed simultaneously with marrow leukemia, and in the other 13 cases the lymphadenopathy was noticed during a relapse. Special stains, such as periodic acid Schiff, Sudan Black-B, Oil Red-O and nonspecific esterase, were used in special cases.

We reported marked biologic activity with the epipodophyllotoxins in phase I/II studies of childhood cancer conducted in the 1970s. We have since extensively used the combination of teniposide and ara-C in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Despite the greatly improved treatment regimes for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in general, resulting in long-term survival in approximately 80% of cases, current therapies still fail in >50% of ALL cases diagnosed within the first year of life (i.e. in infants). Therefore, more adequate treatment strategies are urgently needed to also improve the prognosis for these very young patients with ALL. Here we review the current acquaintance with the biology of infant ALL and describe how this knowledge may lead to innovative therapeutic approaches.

We report a population-based study of patterns of care and survival for people with acute leukaemia diagnosed at age 15-29 years during 1984-94 in regions of England and Wales covered by specialist leukaemia registries.
