Exposure to project-based Housing First is associated with reduced jail time and bookings.

BACKGROUND: Project-based Housing First (HF) programs provide immediate, permanent, low-barrier, nonabstinence-based supportive housing to chronically homeless people within a single housing project. Previous studies have shown project-based HF is associated with 6-month reductions in jail time (Larimer et al., 2009), and that people with criminal histories are able to maintain their housing in supportive housing, such as project-based HF (Malone, 2009; Tsai & Rosenheck, 2012). This study aimed to extend these findings to document the criminal histories of project-based HF residents and to tes

Employing a teen advisory board to adapt an evidence-based HIV/STD intervention for incarcerated African-American adolescent women.

This manuscript assesses priorities and challenges of adolescent females by conducting a meeting with teen advisory board (TAB) members to collect information regarding their lives and experiences pre-, during and post-incarceration in a juvenile detention facility. Multiple themes emerged regarding the impact of incarceration on young African-American females, including experiencing a loss of personal liberties, the importance of making money upon release, unfaithfulness by partners on the 'outside', substance use and lack of control over their environment upon release, including parents, pee

The relationship of pathological gambling to criminality behavior in a sample of Polish male offenders.

BACKGROUND: Severe problem gambling is most often related to income producing offences such as larceny and embezzlement. In addition, the high rate of relapse to gambling problems and the link between gambling debts and crime have clinical, forensic and penitentiary implications. Considering the data from the literature presented here I decided to form and empirically verify a hypothesis that incarcerated men with a diagnosis of pathological gambling are characterized by psychopathic personality disorders, alcohol problems and criminality. MATERIAL/METHODS: The groups of participants encompas

Resilience revisited.

Contemporary reports of individuals experiencing severe adversity have led to renewed debate regarding the processes that mediate a person's ability to withstand extremes of both psychological and physical abuse. The capacity to recover from extremes of trauma and stress is termed resilience. This important concept is of key relevance to health professionals as resilience and also defines a more general concept of responding to challenges that affect the individual in terms of their health behaviour. The evidence base in this area is noteworthy in that much research is based on historical case

Sexually transmitted diseases and incarceration.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize recent literature on the prevalence and burden of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) - focusing on syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea - among adult correctional inmates and detained juveniles. The review is largely limited to US settings. RECENT FINDINGS: The prevalence is higher and the consequences of STDs are generally more severe for incarcerated women than men. Chlamydia and gonorrhea may be more prevalent among confined juveniles than among incarcerated adults, whereas syphilis is probably more prevalent among adults. The opportunity exists to provide e

Asylum seekers in Denmark--a study of health status and grade of traumatization of newly arrived asylum seekers.

BACKGROUND: An unknown number of asylum seekers arriving in Denmark have been exposed to torture or have experienced other traumatising events in their country of origin. The health of traumatised asylum seekers, both physically and mentally, is affected upon arrival to Denmark, and time in asylum centres leads to further deterioration in health. METHODS: One hundred forty-two (N=142) newly arrived asylum seekers were examined at Center Sandholm by Amnesty International Danish Medical Group from the 1st of September until the 31st of December 2007. FINDINGS: The asylum seekers came from 33 d

Women's experience of rage: a critical feminist analysis.

We conducted in-depth interviews with 37 incarcerated women on their experience of rage towards their intimate partner. Participants used specific criteria to distinguish their experience of rage from anger. Rage is described as an overwhelming experience with particular physiological and cognitive changes that takes control of a woman's emotions and actions. In contrast, anger is described as a controllable emotion with a specific termination point. Motivations for acting violently in rage with an intimate partner are described and discussed. Findings suggest a primary trigger for experiencin

Development of antisocial personality disorder in detained youths: the predictive value of mental disorders.

Antisocial personality disorder (APD) is a serious public and mental health concern. Understanding how well conduct disorder (CD) and other mental disorders predict the development of APD among youths involved in the juvenile justice system is critical for prevention. The authors used a stratified random sample of 1,112 detained youths to examine the development of APD at a 3-year follow-up interview. Nearly one fifth of male juvenile detainees later developed APD; approximately one quarter of male juvenile detainees with CD at baseline later developed APD. Significantly more males than female

[Clinical features of tuberculous pleurisy in viral hepatitis and HIV infection at penitentiaries].

In 1999 to 2005, the penitentiaries of Saint Petersburg and the Leningrad Region saw a drastic (almost 30-fold) increase in the number of patients with tuberculous pleurisy concurrent with viral hepatitis and HIV infection. The convicts with concomitant stages IVa, IVb, and IVc HIV infection currently fall ill with tuberculous pleurisy more frequently. In patients with viral hepatitis concurrent with HIV infection, tuberculous pleurisy develops and runs more gravely in proportion to the number of mixed infections than in those without infectious comorbidity. The patients with tuberculous pleur

Efficacy and tolerability of a new synergized pyrethrins thermofobic foam in comparison with benzyl benzoate in the treatment of scabies in convicts: the ISAC study (Studio Della scabbia in ambiente carcerario).

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a very common skin infection in convicts. The SIMSPE Society (Società Italiana di Medicina e Sanità Penitenziaria) has organized and conducted a multicentre, randomized, comparative, parallel group, investigator-blinded trial to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of synergized pyrethrins foam (PF) in comparison with benzyl benzoate (BB) lotion. METHODS: A total of 240 convicted patients, enrolled in eight National Jail Institutions, with a clinical diagnosis of scabies, were treated with PF (n = 120) for three consecutive days or BB (n = 120) for five consecutive da

Prevalent pain and pain level among torture survivors: a follow-up study.

AIM: To estimate change over nine months and over two years, as concerns the prevalence and level of pain in the head, back and feet, among previously tortured refugees settled in Denmark, and to compare associations between torture methods and the prevalence of pain at baseline and at follow-up. METHODS: Sixty-nine refugees previously exposed to torture in their home country were interviewed at a Danish rehabilitation clinic. Fifty-four accepted to be re-interviewed after nine months, and 47 were interviewed again 14 months later. Interviews focussed on the history of exposure to physical an

The association between change in social network characteristics and non-fatal overdose: results from the SHIELD study in Baltimore, MD, USA.

BACKGROUND: Social network factors have been reported to be associated with non-fatal overdose. Yet, few studies have examined how changes in social network characteristics may influence overdose risk. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between changes in social network and non-fatal overdose. METHODS: Data for this study came from 659 participants enrolled in the Self-Help in Eliminating Life-Threatening Diseases (SHIELD) study, who reported details about their non-fatal overdose experience between enrollment and a follow-up visit. Social network characteristics were d

Social support, spiritual program, and addiction recovery.

This study compared personal and emotional modifications of inmates who were recovering addicts and who participated in one of two year-long therapeutic intervention programs, one including social support and experiential spiritual program components (Narcotics Anonymous, NA, meetings and the 12-step course), the other including primarily social support (NA meetings only, without the 12-step program). The hypothesis was that supplementing social support programs with a concrete spiritual program would result in more positive personal and emotional changes. The results seem to support the hypot

Adolescent sexual offenders: incidence of childhood maltreatment, serious emotional disturbance, and prior offenses.

Adolescents incarcerated for sexual offenses were compared to those incarcerated for other crimes on measures of prior child abuse and neglect, serious emotional disturbance, and involvement in child welfare and the juvenile justice system. Sexual or physical abuse was more common than neglect among sexual offenders with fewer than three prior maltreatment reports. Sexual offenders were twice as likely to be receiving special education services for severe emotional disturbance, and were usually incarcerated later than other offenders. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Sexual risk behavior of incarcerated, drug-using women, 1992.

In this study, sexual risk behavior of 104 incarcerated female drug users is examined. Findings demonstrate that incarcerated women who use drugs are at high risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection because of their behavior prior to arrest. During the month prior to arrest, the majority of respondents were sexually active. Half reported past sexual contacts with injecting drug users, and more than one-third had traded sex for money or drugs. Consistent with other studies, condom use was more frequent with casual or commercial partners. Those who traded sex for money were less lik

History of sexual abuse in incarcerated adolescents with gonorrhea or syphilis.

From July 1983 to June 1984, 2521 adolescents were medically screened at entry into a detention facility in New York City. A medical history, physical examination, serology for syphilis, and culture for gonorrhea were obtained from each entrant. A retrospective chart review was conducted for 136 persons with gonorrhea and/or syphilis (79 boys and 57 girls) and 136 sex-matched infection-negative controls. Several characteristics were compared including age, age at first sexual intercourse, sexual abuse history, contraceptive use, and pregnancy status. Among infected cases, 8% of males and 32% o

Practices reported by incarcerated drug abusers to reduce risk of AIDS.

The nation's response to AIDS has failed to effectively curb the spread of AIDS among intravenous (IV) drug users, who are primarily responsible for transmitting the disease to heterosexuals and children. A study assessing awareness of AIDS among 58 county jail inmates--27 IV drug abusers and 31 nonintravenous drug abusers--found that a minority had received formal AIDS education. All of the subjects claimed to be taking some precautions against AIDS, but IV drug abusers were significantly more fearful about contracting AIDS than were nonintravenous users. Less than half of either group knew t

Time orientation in Nazi concentration camp survivors: forty years after.

Temporal aspects were evaluated in 44 Nazi concentration camp survivors and 31 control subjects, all 50-60 years old. The survivors attached to the Holocaust a more intense role within time orientation; they were more past-oriented, less future-oriented, and had a generally more pessimistic attitude toward life events. Implications of the findings are discussed, with emphasis on the role of time orientation in the long-term effects of the Holocaust on survivors.
