This survey which involved 6 salesman and 159 women, allowed us to carry out a study on the different cosmetic products used by women in Dakar to artificially bleach their skin. An analytical study has been conducted on those skin bleaching products through colorimetric identifications of hydroquinone, corticoids and mercurial derivates and the dosage of hydroquinone by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Melanocytic naevi may grow more rapidly during human growth hormone (hGH) therapy. With standardised skin photographs, the growth rate of the naevi was two-fold greater in 14 hypopituitary and 5 Turner's syndrome girls treated with hGH than in untreated patients or controls. Out of 50 cases of indeterminate leprosy, 46 were male and 4 were female. The only clinical finding was a single hypopigmented macule in 38 (76%) cases. Nine (18%) patients had two and three (6%) cases had three hypopigmented macules. All patients were treated with multidrug therapy for one year. At the end of six months, the lesions were still active in 12 (24%) cases. At the end of one year of treatment it was found that 33 (66%) patients became inactive and 3 (6%) cases were still to be active. Nipple-areola reconstruction is an integral part of breast reconstruction. Optimum results are usually obtained when nipple-areola reconstruction is staged after the breast mound has attained its final shape and is well vascularized. The use of intradermal tattoo allows the use of a variety of nonpigmented donor sites. Women report that reconstruction of the nipple-areola enhances their overall satisfaction with breast reconstruction. The knowledgeable and skilled nurse is a valuable member of the professional team during this final phase of breast reconstruction.

Cutaneous nerves showed multiple ultrastructural abnormalities in a patient with incontinentia pigmenti. Fetal nerve bundles were seen both in the dermis and entering the epidermis. A cell with some Schwann cell features was identified above the basal layer amid keratinocytes. Dermal melanophages were in close apposition to Schwann cells. All of these features suggest that neural structures may be abnormal in incontinentia pigmenti and play a role in transfer of melanin from epidermis to dermis.

It is reported on four girls aged 8 to 20 with Incontinentia pigmenti (Ip) The ectodermal dysplasia was associated with oligophrenia, therapy resistant epilepsy with severe psychorganic syndromes and dementia, Lennox syndrome, lability of emotion with severe disorders of social adaptations, spasticity, hypo- and areflexia, hemiathetosis, choreiform unrest, pathological EEG findings, including spike-potentials; relations to cleidocranial dysostosis, dysraphia, Poland's, Greig's and Chotzen's syndrome were found. Ip means unfavourable prognosis and progression of neuropsychiatric disorders.

Serum pemphigoid antibody (BPA) was used to demonstrate the intraepidermal location of human pigmented naevi. Immunofluorescence was predominant along the epidermal-dermal junction and around the naevus nests seemingly located in the dermis. Serial sections showed that these naevus nests were intraepidermal. The immuno-gold labelling technique for electron microscopy, was improved by using uranyl acetate with no osmium tetroxide or lead citrate. Malabsorption syndrome has been produced in the laboratory with chicks and feed supplied by poultry integrators who had experienced the problem. Feed supplied by one company produced chicks that developed pale shanks and had apparent malabsorption of certain nutrients. One chick source also had a statistically lower pigmentation score than the other.

Tuberous sclerosis (TS) is a dominantly inherited disorder characterized by seizures, developmental delay, and specific skin lesions. A 42-year-old man had a metastatic melanoma in the brain, but no obvious primary melanoma could be detected. A halo nevus-like depigmented lesion was found on the left side of the patient's back. The histopathologic features of the depigmented lesion were compatible with those of a spontaneously regressed primary lesion of malignant melanoma. Enhanced immune responses to autologous and homologous melanoma cells were not detected when investigated in the late disease stage. Subsequently, the patient died of disseminated melanoma.

Incontinentia pigmenti is associated with various anomalies in 80% of cases. Among the most important are the ocular abnormalities and more particularly a retrolental mass with detachment of a dysplastic retina. At the basis of this manifestation are retinal vascular changes, characterised at first by ectatic tortuous veins and arteriovenous anastomoses as well as by aneurysmal-like dilatations.

We report a case of reticulate pigmented anomaly of the flexures in a 54 years-old white male patient. His lesions had developed during the last 30 years, involving neck, axillae, groins, anterior chest wall, scrotum, buttocks and thighs. The abnormality is characterized by pigmented epidermal downgrowths, with similar lesions developing around dilated pilosebaceous follicles. The condition may be compared with acanthosis nigricans. For this reason it is important to recognize this new genodermatosis in order to avoid unnecessary investigations to exclude visceral malignancy.
