Accelerated biological brain aging in major depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) patients commonly encounter multiple types of functional disabilities, such as social, physical, and role functioning. MDD is related to an accreted risk of brain atrophy, aging-associated brain diseases, and mortality. Based on recently available studies, there are correlations between notable biological brain aging and MDD in adulthood. Despite several clinical and epidemiological studies that associate MDD with aging phenotypes, the underlying mechanisms in the brain remain unknown. The key areas in the study of biological brain aging in MDD are structural br

Simulations of Amyloid-Forming Peptides in the Crystal State.

There still is little treatment available for amyloid diseases, despite their significant impact on individuals and the social and economic implications for society. One reason for this is that the physical nature of amyloid formation is not understood sufficiently well. Therefore, fundamental research at the molecular level remains necessary to support the development of therapeutics. A few structures of short peptides from amyloid-forming proteins have been determined. These can in principle be used as scaffolds for designing aggregation inhibitors. Attempts to this end have often used the t

Structural Racism as an Environmental Justice Issue: A Multilevel Analysis of the State Racism Index and Environmental Health Risk from Air Toxics.

Communities of color and poor neighborhoods are disproportionately exposed to more air pollution-a pattern known as environmental injustices. Environmental injustices increase susceptibility to negative health outcomes among residents in affected communities. The structural mechanisms distributing environmental injustices in the USA are understudied. Bridging the literatures on the social determinants of health and environmental justice highlights the importance of the environmental conditions for health inequalities and sheds light on the institutional mechanisms driving environmental health

Exploring Harm Reduction in Supportive Housing for Formerly Homeless Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Exclusionary care policy contributes to the growing number of older adults experiencing homelessness and complex health challenges including substance misuse. The aim of this study was to examine how harm reduction policy and practices are experienced and enacted for older adults with homeless histories and care staff in congregate supportive housing. METHODS: Drawing on harm reduction (HR) principles, Rhodes' risk environment framework, and 15 semi-structured interviews (six residents, nine staff) at a 70-bed supportive housing facility in Western Canada, this qualitative constru

Evaluation of structured lipids with behenic acid in the prevention of obesity.

Obesity affects all social classes, making it necessary to develop effective products that aid weight loss or help prevent weight gain. The objective of this work was to study the anti-obesity effects of structured lipids (SL) obtained by enzymatic interesterification, based on olive oil, soy oil and fully hydrogenated crambe oil. Twenty-four C57Bl/6 mice were distributed into four experimental groups according to the diet consumed: Control Diet (CD), Structured Lipids Diet (SLD), High-fat Control Diet (HCD), High-fat Structured Lipids Diet (HSLD). The animals that were fed SLs presented a sma

Scaling up HIV prevention efforts targeting people who inject drugs in Central Asia: a review of key challenges and ways forward.

BACKGROUND: In Central Asia, between 33% and 72% of cumulative HIV infections has been attributed to unsafe injection practices among people who inject drugs (PWID). METHODS: We reviewed the current status and trends of national efforts in Central Asian countries to control HIV among PWID, and also reviewed the key structural and health-systems-related challenges that facilitate drug-use-related HIV risk in Central Asia. RESULTS: The spectrum and scale of HIV prevention services targeting PWID vary considerably among Central Asian countries. In all countries, the potential impact of these in

Primate encephalization.

Encephalization is a concept that implies an increase in brain or neocortex size relative to body size, size of lower brain areas, and/or evolutionary time. Here, I review 26 large-scale comparative studies that provide robust evidence for five lifestyle correlates of encephalization (group living, a large home range, a high-quality diet, a strong reliance on vision, arboreal and forest dwelling), six cognitive correlates (better performance in captive tests, more tactical deception, innovation, tool use, social learning, all subsumed in part by general intelligence), one life history correlat

A quantitative MRI study of posterior fossa development in velocardiofacial syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS) has been identified as a risk factor for developing schizophrenia. Qualitative neuroimaging studies indicated that VCFS was frequently associated with abnormal development of structures in the posterior fossa of the brain. The objective of this investigation was to identify the specific structures affected in the posterior fossa and investigate the association of these neuroanatomic variations with behaviors potentially related to later-onset psychiatric disorders. METHODS: Twenty-four children and adolescents with VCFS individually matched for age

Bridging gaps in breast cancer clinical trial enrollment: insights from a community-based research registry initiative.

OBJECTIVE: Cancer research registries are critical for ensuring representative participation in clinical trials. However, registries based primarily in hospitals may under-enroll women and other populations who experience structural, logistical, cultural, and informational barriers to care and research participation. Community-based organizations (CBOs) may help address this gap by developing registries that engage diverse populations of women at increased risk for and surviving with breast cancer more directly. The purpose of this study was to examine demographic, clinical, and organizational

Shifting social norms, behavioural intentions and opposition to female genital mutilation: Effectiveness of layered community interventions in a high prevalence setting in Kenya.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) remains prevalent in parts of Kenya, sustained by social norms around marriageability and social belonging. Although community interventions to end FGM are widely implemented, quantitative evidence of their effectiveness remains limited. This study evaluated whether mixed-sex community dialogues and women-only reflection circles implemented through the Girl Generation-Africa-Led Movement Programme changed FGM-related beliefs, intentions, social norms, and opposition to FGM in Isiolo County, Kenya. We analysed cross-sectional survey data from 2,235 respondents ag

Why is water insecurity so distressing? Evidence from Iran that interpersonal conflict is key.

Chronic household water insecurity is consistently linked to distress and poor mental health, yet the social pathways remain under-tested. We examine multiple theorized socially situated mechanisms that may explain how household water insecurity translates into depressive symptoms, using population-representative 2024 survey-interview data (N = 685) from Sistan and Baluchestan, Iran. Household water insecurity (HWISE-12), depressive symptoms (PHQ-9), and five mechanisms-interpersonal conflict, distributive injustice, procedural injustice, institutional distrust, and water-labor burden-were mea

Does telehealth disrupt the trainee-supervisor learning environment in vocational general practice training? A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Used sparingly before 2020, telehealth was quickly adopted throughout Australia in response to COVID-19. This required general practitioner (GP) trainees (registrars) and their educators (supervisors and medical educators) to rapidly learn telehealth as a primary consultation method. As telehealth use continues within primary health care beyond the pandemic, greater insight into the impact on GP training is required. This is particularly relevant to general practice settings in countries that, like Australia, utilise an apprenticeship-style training model where the social space of
