Environmental health and risk assessment metrics with special mention to biotransfer, bioaccumulation and biomagnification of environmental pollutants.

The environment pollutants, which are landed up in environment because of human activities like urbanization, mining and industrializations, affects human health, plants and animals. The living organisms present in environment are constantly affected by the toxic pollutants through direct contact or bioaccumulation of chemicals from the environment. The toxic and hazardous pollutants are easily transferred to different environmental matrices like land, air and water bodies such as surface and ground waters. This comprehensive review deeply discusses the routes and causes of different environme

Tailoring remote special education for children with down syndrome during COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines.

Down syndrome is the most common form of intellectual disability. However, there is a paucity of educational research focused on this vulnerable segment of learners especially in the present novel situation. This paper aimed to explore how teachers tailor remote special education for children with down syndrome amid the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines. It draws from a phenomenological qualitative study that collected information from online interviews with nine special education teachers handling children with down syndrome. The results revealed five themes: (1) contextualize individual e

Specialized pro-resolution mediators in the bladder: Receptor expression and recovery of bladder function from cystitis.

Inflammation is a central process in most benign bladder disorders, and its control is a delicate balance between initiating factors and resolving factors. While recent discoveries have shown a central role for the NLRP3 inflammasome in initiation, the resolving pathways remain unexplored. Resolution is controlled by specialized pro-resolution mediators (SPMs) functioning through seven receptors (six in rodents). Here we demonstrate expression of all seven in humans (six in mice) through immunocytochemistry. Expression was universal in urothelia with most also expressed in smooth muscle. We ne

A detailed radiomorphometric analysis of the mandibular foramen, lingula and anti-lingula with a special emphasis on mandibular prognathism.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate radiomorphometric differences of mandibular foramen (MF), lingula (Li), and anti-lingula (AL) between prognathic and non-prognathic patients, using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: A total of 228 3D CBCT images of 57 prognathic and 57 non-prognathic patients were retrospectively evaluated. The distances between MF or Li to occlusal plane (OP), anterior border of ramus (AR), posterior border of ramus (PR), sigmoid notch (SN), gonion (Go) and distances Li to MF were measured. The presence of AL, and the distances to Li were also

A Special Clinical Scenario for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: "Iatrogenic Double-Outlet" Left Ventricle.

A 67-year-old man with a history of chest radiotherapy and severe aortic valve stenosis with calcification of the ascending aortic wall underwent implantation of an apicoaortic conduit from the left ventricular apex to the descending aorta. Eight years later, he presented with progressive exertional dyspnea. Imaging revealed severe native aortic valve insufficiency and calcification, with worsening left ventricular function. We decided to leave the apicoaortic conduit intact and perform transcatheter aortic valve replacement with a balloon-expandable prosthesis. Despite concerns that eliminati

Prevalence and factors associated with failed induction of labor in Worabe Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Induction of labor is one of the most used obstetric procedures in the world. It is performed in around 20% of all pregnancies. Failed induction of labor, on the other hand, has been associated with poorer mother and newborn health outcomes. Besides, there is a scarcity of data on the current burden and drivers. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the prevalence and factors associated with failed induction in Worabe Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Southern Ethiopia. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on medical records of mothers who delivered throu

Pexidartinib in the Management of Advanced Tenosynovial Giant Cell Tumor: Focus on Patient Selection and Special Considerations.

Tenosynovial giant cell tumor (TGCT) is a neoplasm of the joint synovium that can have severe impacts on joint mobility, function, and quality of life. Traditionally, treatment modalities included partial or complete surgical synovectomy, radiotherapy (typically as an adjunct to surgery), and watchful monitoring (no medical or surgical intervention). However, these approaches have been met with varying degrees of success and high recurrence rates, as well as onerous complications and clinical sequelae. Pexidartinib, a colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R) inhibitor, presents a promising

Minimally invasive biomarkers in human population biology research, part 2: An introduction to the special issue.

Over the past several decades, biomarkers have become indispensable tools in human biology, allowing researchers to investigate biocultural and evolutionary questions and to generate basic data on health and well-being. Human biologists are central players in biomarker methods development, pioneering the creation of "field friendly," minimally invasively collected biomarker approaches, as well as leading the innovative use of biomarkers, most notably to map the complex pathways from social and environmental conditions to altered physiology to health effects. This special issue, Part 2 of a col

Vision characteristics of Special Olympics athletes seen at the United States National Games 2010-2018.

BACKGROUND: Special Olympics International (SOI) has provided eye assessments at no cost to athletes participating in competitions through the Special Olympics Lions Clubs International Foundation Opening Eyes (OE) programme. Access to vision services is crucial given the high rates of eye abnormalities found in studies collected at OE programmes in other countries. As of 2022, no studies covering vision data have been published on SOI athletes specifically from the USA. Therefore, this multiple cross-sectional study hopes to investigate the vision profile of US athletes over three national ga

The Outcome of Immediate Administration of Dexamethasone in Children With Croup (Laryngotracheobronchitis) in King Abdullah Specialized Children's Hospital.

Background Croup is an inflammatory disease that affects the upper respiratory tract involving the upper airways of the lungs (bronchial tubes), vocal cords (larynx), and windpipe (trachea). In Canada, it is considered one of the major causes of respiratory diseases in the first 10 years of life. A wide range of viruses like common cold and flu (influenza) infections can cause croup (laryngotracheobronchitis). Dexamethasone has been commonly used to treat croup even though it lacks evidence on patients' recovery. The study aimed to compare the effect of the immediate or late dexamethasone admi

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and COVID-19 Pandemic in Africa: Special Focus on Control Strategies.

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) are a group of twenty (20) chronic, communicable, infectious diseases endemic to the tropics and sub-tropics climate countries, which are intimately associated with poverty, poor sanitation, limited clean water, and healthcare delivery; and dwellers live in proximity to pathogens and diseases vectors. The pathogens are protozoans, bacteria, helminths, fungi, and viruses. NTDs currently affect about one billion people globally, out of which 500 million are Africans living in rural settlements with low political voice and support. In recent years, NTDs have rec

Monkeypox: An Unfamiliar Virus-Clinical and Epidemiological Characteristics, Diagnosis, and Treatment with Special Emphasis on Oral Health.

With the recent increased prevalence of human outbreaks, monkeypox has been recognized for decades as an infectious disease with substantial pandemic potential. The majority of cases of this virus have been observed in the European region (11,865), with few cases in the Western Pacific (54). Various governing health agencies are striving to restrain the fatal monkeypox virus (MPXV). Health practitioners around the world are learning about the many clinical manifestations of this infection, and its potential therapies. Despite the plethora of new evidence and rising cases, the essential questio

Contributions of the Regional Emerging Special Pathogen Treatment Centers to the US COVID-19 Pandemic Response.

The National Emerging Special Pathogens Training and Education Center (NETEC) was established in 2015 to improve the capabilities of healthcare facilities to provide safe and effective care to patients with Ebola and other special pathogens in the United States. Through NETEC, a collaborative network of 10 Regional Emerging Special Pathogen Treatment Centers (RESPTCs) undertook readiness activities that included potential respiratory pathogens. These preparations, which took place before the COVID-19 pandemic, established a foundation of readiness that enabled RESPTCs to play a pivotal role in

Staphylococcus aureus controls eicosanoid and specialized pro-resolving mediator production via lipoteichoic acid.

Staphylococcus aureus causes severe infections associated with inflammation, such as sepsis or osteomyelitis. Inflammatory processes are regulated by distinct lipid mediators (LMs) but how their biosynthetic pathways are orchestrated in S. aureus infections is elusive. We show that S. aureus strikingly not only modulates pro-inflammatory, but also inflammation-resolving LM pathways in murine osteomyelitis and osteoclasts as well as in human monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs) with different phenotype. Targeted LM metabololipidomics using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spec
