Allergological examinations were conducted on 49 women (out of a gynaecological clientele of 982) with different degrees of complaints after wearing an intrauterine device (IUD). At the same time, they and a control group had an histological examination of endometrial biopsies. Nickel allergy was found in 38 of the 49. The contents of impurities, adulterants and diluents in 77 samples of illicit heroin were determined by a combination of high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography. An HPLC procedure for the determination of total phenylacetic acid (PAA) in human plasma is described. After precipitation of plasma proteins with 0.4 N HClO4, the supernatant was hydrolyzed with 1.5 N HCl at 100 degrees C for 5 h, and PAA was extracted with benzene. The trace element status of 25 children receiving a low phenylalanine diet for a treatment of phenylketonuria was studied using hair and serum samples. Hair trace element and calcium concentrations were assayed using X-ray microanalysis and compared with samples from sibling controls. The in vitro metabolism of precocene I by liver microsomes from control and treated rats and the effects of precocene I on the function and histology of the rat liver were examined. Crystallographic studies have shown that calcium palmitate was the fourth most frequent crystalline constituent of gallstones, but it has never been detected using an infra-red technique. A sulfoglycosphingolipid containing N-acetylgalactosamine has been isolated from the lipid extract of rat kidney. The isolation procedure involved extraction of lipids with chloroform/methanol, alkaline methanolysis, and column chromatographies with DEAE-Sephadex and Silica beads. We describe a new assay that is useful for identifying individuals who may be affected with Gaucher's disease. The assay involves the determination of serum acid phosphatase activity using the fluorogenic substrate 4-methylumbelliferyl phosphate.
