Association between psychological traits and occlusal tactile acuity of healthy individuals.

OBJECTIVES: Tactile acuity is a somatosensory measure of the extent to which humans can discern tactile stimuli. It is influenced by how peripheral signals are processed centrally. In the oral cavity, Occlusal Tactile Acuity (OTA) is the ability to perceive minimal thicknesses between antagonist teeth. The aim of the current study was to assess the association between psychological traits and OTA of otherwise healthy individuals. METHODS: Sixty-three volunteers (32 males; mean age ± SD: 24.6 ± 2.7 years) participated in this study. Somatosensory amplification, anxiety, depression, physical sy

Perceptions, Attitudes, Beliefs, and Practices Toward Traditional Chinese Medicine Therapies for Herpes Zoster: A Cross-Sectional Study of Healthcare Professionals.

INTRODUCTION: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) holds great potential in promoting healing and relieving pain for herpes zoster (HZ) treatments. Evidence showed that both healthcare professionals' (HCPs) belief and knowledge influence their attitudes, which result in their expression and direct behavior. However, little is known in this area regarding TCM treatments for HZ. This study aimed to understand the HCPs' perceptions, attitudes, beliefs, and practices toward TCM and its services for HZ. METHODS: During July 2021 and October 2022, a cross-sectional study of HCPs querying demographics

"Let's go over it again": Examining the intra- and interpersonal processes that perpetuate co-rumination in close relationships.

Co-rumination is an interpersonal emotion regulation strategy characterized by extensive, cyclical conversations regarding the causes and consequences of problems and associated negative emotions. Theory posits that over time, interpersonal benefits of co-rumination such as emotional intimacy reinforce the behavior, outweighing the resulting negative impacts on mental health. However, our understanding of how co-rumination is perpetuated within conversations is limited. This study (conducted in 2019-2020) aims to assess perceptions of partner co-rumination and responsiveness as factors that pe

Perspectives of people living with HIV and health workers about a point-of-care adherence assay: a qualitative study on acceptability.

Current antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence monitoring is premised on patients' self-reported adherence behaviour (prone to recall error) and verified by blood viral load measurement (which can delay results). A newly developed Urine Tenofovir Rapid Assay (UTRA) assesses tenofovir in urine at point-of-care and is a novel tool to test and immediately respond to adherence levels of people living with HIV (PLHIV). We explored PLHIV and health workers' initial perceptions about integrating the UTRA into routine medical care for adherence support. We conducted a series of once-off in-depth quali

Refraining from interaction can decrease fear of physical closeness during COVID-19.

Perception of peripersonal space (PPS) and interpersonal distance (IPD) has been shown to be modified by external factors such as perceived danger, the use of tools, and social factors. Especially in times of social distancing in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is vital to study factors that modify PPS and IPD. The present work addresses the question of whether wearing a face mask as a protection tool and social interaction impact the perception of IPD. We tested estimated IPD in pictures at three distances: 50 cm, 90 cm, and 150 cm in both social interaction (shaking hands) and witho

Community empowerment through participation in a tsetse control project in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Gambiense Human African Trypanosomiasis (g-HAT) is a neglected tropical disease caused by trypanosomes transmitted by tsetse flies. In 2017, a pilot community-based project was launched in three villages in DRC with the overall goal of empowering community members to control tsetse using Tiny Targets which attract and kill tsetse. In this paper, we assess the community participation process in these three pilot villages over >4 years and evaluate to what extent this resulted in the empowerment of communities. We conducted a qualitative study using a participatory research approach. Together wi

Plaque Inhibitory Effect of Hyaluronan-Containing Mouthwash in a 4-Day Non-Brushing Model.

PURPOSE: Despite being the gold standard antiplaque agent, chlorhexidine (CHX) has many adverse effects that make scientists search for new agents to combat biofilms as effective as CHX. Hyaluronan, also known as hyaluronic acid (HA), is a natural polysaccharide with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and bacteriostatic properties. The objectives were to evaluate the plaque inhibitory, and anti-inflammatory effects of HA mouthwash compared to CHX and distilled water (DW) in a 4-day non-brushing model together with the participants' preference to the used products. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-th

"He Who Spareth the Rod Hateth His Son": Perceptions Regarding Corporal Punishment Among Ultra-Orthodox Jewish Fathers in Israel.

Based on the findings of substantial research, Western professionals today perceive corporal punishment as a threat to child well-being. They also view it as a violation of children's rights. Nonetheless, many minority groups in Western societies still consider it to be a legitimate child-rearing practice. In response to this gap, this article presents qualitative findings from an exploratory context-informed study of Ultra-Orthodox Jewish fathers in Israel, regarding their perceptions and ascribed meanings of corporal punishment. Our exploration was guided by the following research question:

Ebola vaccine? Family first! Evidence from using a brief measure on Ebola vaccine demand in a national household survey during the outbreak in Sierra Leone.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination against Ebolavirus is an emerging public health tool during Ebola Virus Disease outbreaks. We examined demand issues related to deployment of Ebolavirus vaccine during the 2014-2015 outbreak in Sierra Leone. METHODS: A cluster survey was administered to a population-based sample in December 2014 (N = 3540), before any Ebola vaccine was available to the general public in Sierra Leone. Ebola vaccine demand was captured in this survey by three Likert-scale items that were used to develop a composite score and dichotomized into a binary outcome to define high demand. A mul

Establishment of a mouse model for injury-induced scar formation and the accompanying chronic pain: Comprehensive microarray analysis of molecular expressions in fibrosis and hyperalgesia.

BACKGROUND: Surgery is often accompanied by scar formation, which results in a pathological state called fibrosis. Fibrosis is characterized by the excess deposition of extracellular matrix molecules in the connective tissue, leading to tissue contracture and chronic pain. To understand the molecular mechanisms underlying these processes and their causative relationships, we performed comprehensive analyses of gene expression changes in the hind paw tissue of a mouse model established by generating a scar in the sole. RESULTS: Subcutaneous tissue was extensively stripped from the sole of the

False-positive mammography and its association with health service use.

OBJECTIVES: A false-positive mammogram can result in anxiety, distress, and increased perceptions of breast cancer risk, potentially changing how women utilize healthcare. This study examined whether having an abnormal mammogram, considered a proxy for elevated risk perception, was associated with greater future health service use (outpatient visits and referrals). STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study using electronic health record data, spanning 2008 to 2012, from Boston Medical Center, a safety-net hospital. METHODS: We grouped 3920 women aged 40 to 75 years receiving primary care an

On the effects of a workplace fitness program upon pain perception: a case study encompassing office workers in a Portuguese context.

INTRODUCTION Office workers share several behavioural patterns: they work seated without moving for long times, they use only a few specific muscles of their arms, wrists and hands, and they keep an overall poor body posture. These working patterns generate musculoskeletal disorders, and produce discomfort or pain. Implementation of a work fitness program is thus a low-cost strategy to reduce/prevent body pain derived from work. The aim of this study was to test the benefits of a workplace fitness program, specifically applied to an administrative department of a Portuguese enterprise. Recall
