Development of microvascular complications in type 1 diabetic patients 10 years follow-up.

Microvascular diabetic complications are the most common causes of morbidity and mortality of patients with type 1 disease. Diabetic nephropathy is becoming the single most common cause of end stage renal failure, while diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of blindness in working-age population. The main aim of the study was to evaluate the progression of late microvascular complications in type 1 diabetic patients treated by conventional or intensified insulin regimen over the period of 10 years. We selected a random sample of 32 patients, including 14 males and 18 females, aged 30,6

Linkage study of cancer risk among lead-exposed workers in New Jersey.

OBJECTIVES: Epidemiologic studies have illustrated a possible association between occupational exposure to lead and cancer, specifically cancers of the kidney, lung, stomach, and nervous system. We performed a linkage between two New Jersey databases: the Adult Blood Lead Epidemiology and Surveillance System (ABLES) and the New Jersey State Cancer Registry (NJSCR) for 1985-2001 to ascertain the risk of cancer in lead-exposed workers and to evaluate the usefulness of this type of linkage. METHODS: A cohort of 3192 men from the ABLES database met the selection criteria before the linkage. AUTOM

[Chronic anxiety and phobic disorders with persistent agoraphobia: clinical and follow-up study].

There were studied 2 groups of the patients with a diagnosis of agoraphobia (according to ICD = 10). The first group included 34 patients which didn't use a specialized psychiatric service; the second one included 25 patients which needed an active therapy under conditions of psychiatric hospital. Dynamics of a disease was investigated by the method of retrospective (3 years) and following prospective (3 years) evaluation. The first group was characterized by relatively favourable outcome of chronic anxious-phobic disorders (APD) with the phenomena of a stable agoraphobia (5.8% of patients wit

A model for the future care of acute spinal cord injuries.

This is a review of the total care of those acute spinal cord injury patients in Ontario during the years 1969 and 1970, from extrication and transportation following the accident to death, or the completion of primary definitive rehabilitation. Information was extracted from the available ambulance records, the patients and many of the responsible physicians were interviewed personally. The study was detailed and intensive and included a review of each patient's hospital records in each hospital up to discharge from the rehabilitation programme into the community, or to a chronic care unit. Inflectional Morphology Development and Its Association With Parental Input: Evidence From Kannada-Speaking Preschool Children.

Morphological development is a crucial component of early language acquisition. This study examined developmental changes in types and tokens of inflectional morphemes produced among 214 typically developing Kannada-speaking preschool children and their parents. Inflectional use was elicited through a story retelling task and analyzed in child's and parental speech. Results showed developmental increase in both types and tokens of inflectional morphology production in children, indicating that preschool years constitute an important phase of inflectional systems in Kannada, an agglutinative la

How to administer suppositories in adults with constipation.

Suppositories are used in clinical practice for several purposes, including bowel evacuation and the administration of medicines such as analgesics and antibiotics. A common indication for their use is constipation. This article aims to support nurses to administer suppositories to adults with constipation in a safe, effective and dignified manner. • Suppositories contain lipophilic fats that melt following insertion into the rectum, releasing a medicine into the body for local or systemic absorption. • Different types of suppositories are available to treat constipation and the method of inse

[Agitation].

Agitation is a behavioral and psychological symptom of dementia (BPSD); however, until recently, there has been no consensus-based definition. When initiating therapeutic interventions, the type of dementia that is the cause of the BPSD must be considered and treatment must be tailored accordingly. As with other types of BPSD, non-pharmacological interventions are considered the first-line treatment for agitation, unless the symptoms present an exceptional level of urgency. Person-centered care is effective as a non-pharmacological intervention for agitation. Other examples include music thera

Disparities in Influenza Control and Surveillance in Latin America and the Caribbean.

To identify measures that mitigate the impact of influenza in Latin America and the Caribbean, we compared the burden and detection capacity in humans and animals after the 2009 pandemic. The incidence rate in people was higher in Chile (23.72 per 100,000 people), but the impact was greater for Guatemala (503.78 disability-adjusted life years per 100,000 people). Brazil, Peru, Argentina, and Mexico built better medical testing, with typing being less frequent in Chile and Argentina, where costs for medical care were higher. The positivity rate among avian and nonhuman mammals was 5.8%, with mo

Genetic population structure of Haemophilus influenzae at local and global scales.

Haemophilus influenzae is an opportunistic bacterial pathogen that causes both non-invasive and invasive disease in humans. Although the H. influenzae type b vaccine can reduce invasive disease, it is not effective against non-b serotypes or unencapsulated non-typeable H. influenzae (NTHi). The genetic population structure of H. influenzae, especially NTHi, which is typically prevalent in lower- and middle-income countries, is unclear. Here we whole-genome sequenced 4,474 isolates of H. influenzae from an unvaccinated paediatric carriage and pneumonia cohort from the Maela camp for displaced p

Update on glycogen storage disease: a brief review of the main disorders.

A glycogen storage disease (GSD) is a metabolic disorder caused by a deficiency of an enzyme or transport protein affecting glycogen synthesis, glycogen breakdown, or glucose breakdown, typically in muscles and/or liver cells. Several enzymes are required for the processes of glycogenesis and glycogenolysis. Glycogen storage diseases happen when a person doesn't have one or more of these enzymes. GSD in almost all cases is genetic (In exceptional cases, it can be environmental, like GSD in livestock). Genetic GSD results mainly from inborn error in carbohydrate metabolism, where genetically fa

Clinical characterization of a novel ATP1A2 p.Gly615Glu mutation in nine family members with familial hemiplegic migraine.

Familial hemiplegic migraine type 2 results from pathogenic variants in the ATP1A2 gene, which encodes for a catalytic subunit of sodium/potassium ATPase. This extremely rare autosomal dominant disorder manifests with a spectrum of symptoms, most commonly pure hemiplegic phenotype, epilepsy, and/or intellectual disability. In this study, we detail the clinical features and genetic analysis of nine patients from a large family spanning four generations, with all carrying a previously unreported likely pathogenic variant, p.Gly615Glu, in ATP1A2, compatible with a diagnosis of familial hemiplegic

The Role of Compassion in Shaping Social Entrepreneurs' Prosocial Opportunity Recognition.

Compassion is acknowledged as a key motivational source of prosocial opportunity recognition (OR). This study examines the underlying processes of different types of compassion that lead to prosocial OR interventions designed to solve or ameliorate social problems. Self-compassion is associated with intimate personal experiences of suffering and encompasses a desire to alleviate the distress of others based on common humanity, mental distance and mindfulness. Other-regarding compassion is associated with value structures and social awareness and is based on a desire to help the less fortunate.

[The significance of C-KIT gene mutations in the diagnosis and prognosis of malignant tumors].

Mutations in the C-KIT gene encoding type III receptor tyrosine kinase that regulates cellular processes, such as differentiation, survival, proliferation, migration, and apoptosis, are found in some neoplasms: gastrointestinal stromal tumor, mastocytosis, melanoma, breast carcinomas, myeloid leukemias, and a number of others. Tumors that exhibit these mutations are sensitive to therapy with tyrosine kinase inhibitors, which makes it necessary to correctly identify the mutation status by C-KIT in order to apply a personalized approach to therapy. This literature review shows that the type and

Role of respirators in controlling the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) amongst dental healthcare providers: a review.

During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare professionals are at the forefront of managing the highly infectious coronavirus. As the most common route of transmission is via aerosols and droplet inhalation, it is critical for healthcare workers to have the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) including gowns, masks and goggles. Surgical masks are not effective in preventing the influenza and SARS, so they are unlikely to be able to resist contaminated aerosols from entering the respiratory system. Therefore, it is vital to use respirators which have been proven to offer better prot

Overlengthening of the radial column in radial head replacement: a review of the literature and presentation of a classification system.

BACKGROUND: Radial head arthroplasty is a common procedure in elbow surgery. It has been shown to be of benefit for the patients, but there also are relevant complications that should be prevented if possible. One significant complication is overlengthening of the radial head prosthesis. In overlengthening, the head of the prosthesis overextends the physiological level of the native radial head and leads to overcompression in the radiohumeral joint. Rapid erosion and arthritic changes may then impede the clinical outcome. The incidence of overlengthening is not precisely known, but estimations

The Use of Stem Cells in Neural Regeneration: A Review of Current Opinion.

Nerve injury is a large problem that produces much pain in patients. Injury to the nervous system causes serious consequences and affects a person's quality of life. The development of tissue engineering has created a brighter future for nerve regeneration, and research has not stopped since the discovery of stem cells. Stem cells are a type of pluripotent cell that exhibits the capacity of selfdifferentiation and proliferation. Many studies have demonstrated the ability of stem cells to differentiate into other types of cells, including neurons, after induction with trophic factors in vivo an

Botulism mortality in the USA, 1975-2009.

Botulism had mortality rates >60% before the 1950s. We reviewed confirmed botulism cases in the USA during 1975-2009 including infant, foodborne, wound, and other/unknown acquisition categories, and calculated mortality ratios. We created a multivariate logistic regression model for non-infant cases (foodborne, wound, and other/unknown). Overall mortality was 3.0% with 109 botulism-related deaths among 3,618 botulism cases [18 (<1%) deaths among 2,352 infant botulism cases, 61 (7.1%) deaths among 854 foodborne botulism cases, 18 (5.0%) deaths among 359 wound botulism cases, and 12 (22.6%) deat
