Due to the difficulties encountered in the etiologie diagnosis of papillo uveitis along with the increasing occurrence of fungal infections (in paralleled with the number of AIDS affected patients), we found of interest to report a case of exsudative macular chorioretinitis with poor evolution under steroid therapy. In this patient infection by Candida Albicans was suspected and confirmed only after isolation and culture of the fungal from a vitrectomy specimen. A therapeutic apponch using Fluconazole (Triflucan allowed a dramatic improvement of visual acuity within a few months. Thus, vitrect…

Long-term S-antigen (S-Ag) specific T lymphocyte lines can induce experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis (EAU) when transferred into naive rats systemically or intravitreally. The uveitogenic lymphocyte line (ThS) stains positively for the ART 18 (IL-2 receptor) and W3/25 (T helper/inducer); negatively for OX6 (RT1B) and OX8 (T suppressor/cytotoxic cells). The inflammation induced by systemic or intravitreal transfer of the ThS line was studied with respect to the surface markers of the infiltrating cells, as well as the markers expressed by the resident ocular cells, by immunohistopathological

We divided 61 patients (111 eyes) with pars planitis into three groups based on clinical appearance. Patients in Group I had bilateral vitreous cells and bilateral pars plana exudates (36 patients, 72 eyes); patients in Group II had bilateral vitreous cells but a pars plana exudate in one eye only (14 patients, 28 eyes); and patients in Group III had vitreous cells and exudate formation in the single eye involved (11 patients, 11 eyes). The presence of a pars plana exudate was associated with more severe vitreous disease and increased incidence of cystoid macular edema.

A total of 424 leprosy patients were screened for uveal involvement. Uveal changes were found in 11.2% of these patients. Uveal involvement was more common in patients with greater duration of the disease and in patients on irregular Dapsone therapy. Of the patients with uveal involvement 82% were lepromatous, 16% were borderline and 2% were of tuberculoid leprosy. Uveal changes in form of active iridocyclitis (21.3%), healed iridocyclitis (58.5%), iris atrophy (10.6%), iris pearls (7.4%), small irregular pupil (46.7%), pupil refractory to dilatation (56.3%) were seen. Posterior segment involv

Iridocyclitis--an inflammation of the iris and ciliary body occurs in lepromatous spectrum of leprosy of long duration. It is usually bilateral, has a very chronic course with acute exacerbations which are suppressed with the help of corticosteroids and other antiinflammatory drugs--Mydriatic to keep the Pupil dilated and also an antibiotic to take care of secondary infection which may be present. It is a major cause of blindness, due to its secondary damaging effects on the various ocular tissues. Medical and Paramedical Workers attending these patients must be made aware of the chronicity of

A young girl with early-onset pauciarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis suffered from recurrent severe bilateral iridocyclitis. Despite intensive medical therapy, she gradually lost all useful vision and ultimately required bilateral enucleation at the age of 10 years for control of pain and photophobia. Histopathologic study of the eyes revealed in the iris and ciliary body a dense inflammatory infiltrate composed principally of plasma cells, as well as angle closure, a dense cyclitic membrane, retinal detachment, cystoid macula, and optic atrophy. Immunoperoxidase stains showed little imm

In 4 cases of heterochromic cyclitis with cataract, 5 cases of herpetic iridocyclitis, and 5 cases of senile cataract, hypersensitivity to both alpha-crystalline and uveal pigment was investigated by lymphocyte-transformation and leukocyte-migration tests. In 3 cases of heterochromic cyclitis with cataracts, cellular hypersensitivity to alpha-crystalline was proven. Basing on these findings, the role of hypersensitivity to lens proteins in the etiology of heterochromic cyclitis is suggested.
