Voice Perception Across Languages: Reduced Similarity Between Speakers, Stable Identity Within Speakers.

PURPOSE: Despite the central role of voice perception in social interaction, the mechanisms underlying cross-linguistic voice similarity judgments remain underexplored. This study examined how voice similarity is perceived within and across languages, using bilingual speech as a means to isolate language-driven effects while controlling for anatomical variation. METHOD: English-speaking listeners with and without Cantonese proficiency completed a perceptual similarity rating task involving Cantonese-English bilingual speakers. Listeners rated the similarity of voice pairs on a 9-point scale,

A digital audio workstation approach for matching the sound quality of speech and music for single-sided deaf patients fit with cochlear implants.

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear implant (CI) patients who are single-sided deaf can match the sound quality of speech presented to their CI ear and speech presented to their normal hearing ear. Previous work using this patient population has generated acoustic approximations of CI sound quality for speech, achieving high similarity ratings through interactive manipulation of sound parameters such as filtering, pitch shifting, and spectral smearing. The present study aimed to extend this approach to music. METHODS: A digital audio workstation (DAW) methodology was developed for generating sound quality

Will I speak louder if I see you struggling to understand? Speech modifications in response to non-verbal visual cues of listening effort.

During face-to-face interactions, overt non-verbal cues from conversational partners can reflect the quality of the conversation. Here, we investigated the impact of specific visual non-verbal cues (i.e., facial expressions of confusion, approaching movements towards the speaker), on the speakers' acoustic-phonetic adaptations typically employed to enhance clarity (i.e., speech rate, voice intensity, and pitch). Participants read sentences to a listener seated in a separate room and visible through a head-mounted display. Crucially, no auditory feedback was provided. Unknown to participants, t

Pitch Strength & Percent Vocal Creak to Assess Treatment Response in Adductor Laryngeal Dystonia.

OBJECTIVE: Quantifying treatment-related voice change in adductor laryngeal dystonia (AdLD) is essential for optimizing botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) therapy, yet clinical practice lacks objective, automated metrics to track response. Counting voice disruptions remains the standard but is labor-intensive and prone to error. This study evaluated whether pitch strength (PS) and percent vocal creak (%VC) (automated indices of pitch salience and irregular phonation) are sensitive to BoNT-related changes. We examined whether these metrics capture treatment effects at the group level, and through indi

Optimizing cervical breath sound acquisition protocol in dysphagia patients: an orthogonal experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia is a highly prevalent condition among patients with stroke. Cervical auscultation serves as a crucial screening method for dysphagia detection. The advancement of artificial intelligence has enabled acoustic analysis to emerge as a viable alternative to manual auscultation. While high-quality breath sound recordings are fundamental for reliable acoustic analysis in dysphagia screening, current clinical practice lacks standardized protocols for acquiring cervical respiratory sounds during auscultation. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the optimal acquisition protocol for cervica

Ultrasound-Activated Microbubbles for Precision Chemo-Radioenhancement in Prostate Cancer: Sonoporation, Therapeutic Synergy, and Translational Pathways.

Background/Objectives: Radiotherapy and docetaxel are mainstays of prostate cancer management, yet both are constrained-radiotherapy by normal-tissue tolerance and docetaxel by systemic toxicity and acquired resistance. Ultrasound-activated microbubbles (USMB) convert acoustic energy into spatially localized mechanical bioeffects that can potentiate both. This review examines USMB as a precision chemo- and radio-enhancer in prostate cancer. Methods: We conducted a scoping review with mechanistic and translational synthesis, informed by PRISMA-ScR reporting principles. We identified sources thr

The Influence of Music on Mental Health Through Neuroplasticity: Mechanisms, Clinical Implications, and Contextual Perspectives.

Music is a near-universal anthropological and sensory phenomenon that engages distributed brain networks and peripheral physiological systems to shape emotion, cognition, sociality, and bodily regulation. Evidence from electrophysiology, neuroimaging, endocrinology, randomized controlled trials, and longitudinal training studies indicates that both receptive and active musical experiences produce experience-dependent neural and systemic adaptations. These include entrainment of neural oscillations, modulation of predictive and reward signaling, autonomic and neuroendocrine changes, and long-te
