OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of correcting complex deformity of the orbital region and contraction of the eye socket that caused by enucleation and postoperative irradiation for the treatment of retinoblastoma.

Two hundred fifty-one carbon dioxide laser-assisted cases of microphonosurgery are reported. Our series includes 167 women (66.5%) and 84 men (33.5%), with a mean age of 41 (+/-11) years. Single lesions represent 67.8% (n = 170) of the cases, with 20% (n = 50) being nodules, 18% (n = 44) Reinke's edema, 9% (n = 23) polyps, 8% (n = 19) sulci and related lesions, 6% (n = 16) mucosal cysts, 4% (n = 10) scars, 2% (n = 4) granulomas, and 2% (n = 4) vascular corditis. Bone loss following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) may be focal or diffuse. It may be caused mechanically, either by unloading of the bone leading to disuse osteoporosis, or by overloading of the bone leading to trabecular fractures and bone destruction. Osteolysis, instigated by an inflammatory reaction to particulate wear debris, is an important and common cause of bone loss after TKA. Less common, though sometimes dramatic, causes of bone loss are infection and osteonecrosis.

This study examines the histological effects of different sizes of polyethylene particles implanted into the rabbit tibia. Seventeen mature New Zealand white female rabbits were allocated into three groups. Group 1 (5 rabbits) received polyethylene particles averaging approximately 16 microns in diameter, implanted into the right proximal tibia through a drill hole.
