Cardiovascular risk and glucocorticoids: a Dutch National Registry of growth hormone treatment in adults with growth hormone deficiency analysis.

PURPOSE: Patients with hypopituitarism are at increased cardiovascular risk, in part because of growth hormone deficiency (GHD), but probably also because of the overuse of glucocorticosteroids in concomitant adrenal insufficiency (AI). We hypothesized that patients with hypopituitarism that were on glucocorticosteroid replacement therapy for concomitant AI would have worse cardiovascular outcomes than those without. METHODS: Retrospective nationwide cohort study. GHD patients from the Dutch National Registry of Growth Hormone Treatment in adults were grouped by the presence (AI; N = 1836) or

Stability of symptom-based subtypes in Sjogren's disease.

OBJECTIVES: The Newcastle Sjogren's Stratification Tool (NSST) stratifies Sjogren's disease patients into four subtypes. Understanding the stability of the subtypes is vital if symptom-based stratification is to be more broadly adopted. In this study, we stratify patients longitudinally to understand how symptom-based subtypes vary over time and factors influencing subtype change. METHODS: 274 patients from the United Kingdom Primary Sjögren's Syndrome Registry (UKPSSR) with data permitting NSST subtype assignment from two study visits were included. The French Assessment of Systemic Signs an

Hesperitin prevents non-alcoholic steatohepatitis by modulating mitochondrial dynamics and mitophagy via the AMPKα-Drp1/PINK1-Parkin signaling pathway.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is becoming a global public health burden, yet effective therapeutic strategies are notably lacking. NAFLD development may be mediated by mitochondrial dysfunction, according to new research. Producing mitochondrial regulators from plant-based substances to treat mitochondrial dysfunction is an appealing approach to treating NAFLD. Hesperetin (HES) is a flavonoid that is found naturally and is a member of the flavanone family. This study aims to clarify the mechanism of HES in preventing NAFLD which is caused by a high-fat diet (HFD). Serum and liver b

Involvement of INS15 in the development and pathogenicity of the zoonotic pathogen Cryptosporidium parvum.

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidium parvum is a common protozoan pathogen responsible for moderate to severe diarrhea in humans and animals. The C. parvum genome contains 22 genes encoding insulinase-like M16 proteases (INS) with diverse structures and sequences, suggesting that members of the protein family may have distinct biological functions in the life cycle of parasites. Here, we investigated the role of INS15 and INS16, two proteases encoded by neighboring genes with high sequence identity, in the growth and development of C. parvum in vivo and in vitro. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: INS15

Sex differences in Black Veterans with PTSD: women versus men have higher sympathetic activity, inflammation, and blunted cardiovagal baroreflex sensitivity.

PURPOSE: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with greater risk of incident hypertension and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Inflammation and autonomic derangements are suggested as contributing mechanisms. Women and Black adults have higher CVD risk associated with stress; however, whether there is a sex difference in autonomic and inflammatory mechanisms among Black individuals with PTSD is not known. We hypothesized that Black women with PTSD have higher inflammation, sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity and impaired baroreflex sensitivity (BRS). METHODS: In 42 Black Vete

Race-specific spirometry equations may overestimate asthma control in Black children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of evidence suggests that use of race terms in spirometry reference equations underestimates disease burden in Black populations, which may lead to disparities in pulmonary disease outcomes. Data on asthma-specific health consequences of using race-adjusted spirometry are lacking. METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of 163 children from two observational asthma studies to determine the frequencies of participants with ppFEV1 < 80% (consistent with uncontrolled asthma) or ppFEV1 ≥ 80% using race-specific (GLI-African American or Caucasian) vs. race-neutral (GL
