The role of infant nutrition in the global epidemic of non-communicable disease.

Non-communicable diseases (NCD) and atherosclerotic CVD in particular, are the most important health problems of the 21st century. Already in every world region except Africa, NCD account for greater mortality than communicable, maternal, perinatal and nutritional conditions combined. Although modifiable lifestyle factors in adults are the main determinants, substantial evidence now suggests that factors in early life also have a major role in the development of NCD; commonly referred to as the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease hypothesis. Factors in utero, early postnatal life and t

The protective effects of oral low-dose quercetin on diabetic nephropathy in hypercholesterolemic mice.

AIMS: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the most important causes of chronic renal disease, and the incidence of DN is increasing worldwide. Considering our previous report (Gomes et al., 2014) indicating that chronic treatment with oral low-dose quercetin (10 mg/Kg) demonstrated anti-oxidative, anti-apoptotic and renoprotective effects in the C57BL/6J model of DN, we investigated whether this flavonoid could also have beneficial effects in concurrent DN and spontaneous atherosclerosis using the apolipoprotein E-deficient mouse (apoE(-/-)). METHODS: Streptozotocin was used to induce diabete

Site-specific changes in cytokine response to septic dose of lipopolysaccharide in ovariectomized female rats.

PURPOSE: The immune response is altered according to hormonal and metabolic status. Obesity increases the inflammatory and fever response, whereas loss of gonadal steroid decreases behavioral response to immune stress. However, the immune systems of ovariectomized animals exhibiting obesity and gonadal steroid deficiency, particularly under septic conditions, have not been fully examined. In the present study, we evaluated the ovariectomy-induced changes of central and peripheral immune responses to life-threatening septic stimulus. METHODS AND RESULTS: Ovariectomized rats showed heavier body

Effect of dronabinol therapy on physical activity in anorexia nervosa: a randomised, controlled trial.

PURPOSE: The level of physical activity is inappropriately high in up to 80% of the patients suffering of anorexia nervosa (AN), as a result of conscious efforts to lose weight, affect regulation and biological adaptive changes to starvation induced by hypothermia and neuroendocrine mechanisms. The purposes of this paper were to (1) assess the effect of dronabinol-a synthetic cannabinoid agonist-on physical activity in patients with chronic and stable AN, and to (2) unravel the role of leptin and cortisol in this process. METHODS: This prospective, randomised, double-blind, crossover study wa

Elevated myocardial Na+/H+ exchanger isoform 1 activity elicits gene expression that leads to cardiac hypertrophy.

In myocardial disease, elevated expression and activity of Na(+)/H(+) exchanger isoform 1 (NHE1) are detrimental. To better understand the involvement of NHE1, transgenic mice with elevated heart-specific NHE1 expression were studied. N-line mice expressed wild-type NHE1, and K-line mice expressed activated NHE1. Cardiac morphology, interstitial fibrosis, and cardiac function were examined by histological staining and echocardiography. Differences in gene expression between the N-line or K-line and nontransgenic littermates were probed with genechip analysis. We found that NHE1 K-line (but not

INTENSIVE TREATMENT OF A CAPTIVE BORNEAN ELEPHANT (ELEPHAS MAXIMUS BORNEENSIS) INFECTED WITH MYCOBACTERIUM CAPRAE IN JAPAN.

In 2015, an estimated 17-year-old female Bornean elephant (Elephas maximus borneensis) at Fukuyama Zoo in Japan exhibited anorexia and significant weight loss. Pan-susceptible Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) was isolated from vaginal discharge, oral mucus, urine, and fecal samples by culture. The isolate was identified as Mycobacterium caprae by genetic analysis. Isoniazid, pyrazinamide, and levofloxacin were administered rectally. Body weight increased to normal, but subsequently decreased again. Elevation of liver enzymes occurred, likely related to the increase in isoniazid dosage

Lung mechanics, radiography and 67Ga scintigraphy in experimental Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia.

Respiratory system pressure-volume (P-V) studies, 67Ga-citrate scans, and chest radiographs were made in the corticosteroid-treated rat model of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. The steroid treatment used to provoke Pneumocystis infection in this model resulted in a reduction in body weight, lung weight and lung volumes compared to age-matched controls but no change in the normalized pressure-volume curve. P. carinii infection was associated with increased lung wet weight and flattening of the respiratory system P-V curve when compared to either age matched controls or steroid-treated animals o

Long-term metabolic risk for the metabolically healthy overweight/obese phenotype.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The clinical relevance of the metabolically healthy overweight/obese (MHO) phenotype is controversial and the relationships between weight change and the development of cardiometabolic risk factors is unknown. Therefore, we aim to: (1) Assess the long-term risk of developing one or more components of the metabolic syndrome in MHO adults compared with metabolically healthy normal weight (MHNW); (2) Evaluate risk of a composite of death, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and risk of developing type 2 diabetes between adults defined according to baseline body mass index and met

Exploring the Feasibility, Acceptability, and Safety of a 4:3 Intermittent Fasting Weight Loss Program Among Stage I-III Breast Cancer Survivors With Overweight or Obesity: Protocol for a 6-Month Proof-of-Concept Feasibility Trial.

BACKGROUND: Mounting evidence underscores the adverse effects of excess body weight during cancer survivorship, yet many breast cancer survivors struggle to maintain a healthy weight (approximately 70% have overweight or obesity [OW/OB]). Daily caloric restriction with increased physical activity is the standard behavioral weight loss approach; however, many fail to achieve clinically meaningful (>5%) weight loss, emphasizing the need for innovative interventions. A recent investigation found that a behavioral weight loss program focusing on 4:3 intermittent fasting (4:3 IMF) produced 60% grea

A new approach for the detection of obesity-related airway obstruction in lung-healthy individuals.

BACKGROUND: Subjects with obesity show an increased prevalence of airway obstruction but it is not clear in each case whether this reflects genuine lung disease. Via intentional increase in end-expiratory lung volume we studied the detection of obesity-induced airway obstruction in lung-healthy obese subjects. METHODS: The primary study population comprised 66 lung-healthy obese subjects and 23 normal weight subjects. Measurements were performed in a body plethysmograph allowing for recording and quantification of breathing loops in terms of specific airway resistance at both normal and inten

Knowledge about nutrition, eating habits and weight reduction intervention among methadone maintenance treatment patients.

Methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) patients are often under-nourished and overweight. The impact of a nutrition intervention program to improve knowledge about healthy food habits and losing weight was studied. Patients were screened for knowledge about nutrition and body mass index (BMI). Those with a low knowledge score or a BMI ≥26 (n=89) were randomly divided into either intervention (two lectures on healthy nutrition followed by weight monitoring over 6weeks), or controls (weighed at baseline, post-lectures and at study closure). The Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS), eating behavior ra

Obesity, weight gain, and ovarian cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate how adipose tissue alters endogenous hormone levels and may affect events at the ovarian tissue level. METHODS: We assessed current weight, weight at age 18, and adult weight change in relation to ovarian cancer risk among 109,445 participants in the Nurses' Health Study. Women reported ovarian cancer risk factors and new ovarian cancer diagnoses in biennial mailed questionnaires from 1976 to 1996. Height and weight were queried in 1976, current weight was updated biennially, and weight at age 18 was ascertained in 1980. During 20 years of follow-up and 1,703,474 per

Regulation of Cues vs Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Binge Eating and Weight Loss Among Veterans: A Feasibility and Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has the most empirical support for treatment of binge eating. Appetitive traits, including food responsiveness and satiety responsiveness, impact how individuals interact with the current obesogenic environment. The regulation of cues (ROC) plus behavioral weight loss (BWL) intervention was specifically developed to target food responsiveness, satiety responsiveness, and energy reduction. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of ROC+BWL and CBT over 5 months of treatment and 6 months of follow-up and to explore whether clinical bing

Effects of 6-OHDA-Mediated Chemical Denervation of Sympathetic Axons in Inguinal Subcutaneous White Adipose Tissue.

AIMS: White adipose tissue (WAT) innervation by sensory and sympathetic axons contributes to tissue functions, but the consequences of selectively disrupting sympathetic input to WAT remain incompletely defined. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We utilised 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) as a validated approach to achieve bilateral sympathetic denervation of mouse inguinal subcutaneous WAT (ing-scWAT) and investigated impacts on adipose and whole-body metabolism. RESULTS: Sympathetic denervation did not impact body weight or adipose mass by 16 days post-denervation but significantly altered energy expendit
