Autosomal dominant osteopetrosis.

Autosomal dominant osteopetrosis is radiographically characterized by universal osteosclerosis, primarily involving the axial skeleton, and by symmetrical affections of the long bones without modeling defects. Based on standard radiographs, it is possible to describe two different subtypes with different clinical, biochemical, and histologic manifestations. Type I is radiographically characterized by pronounced osteosclerosis of the cranial vault, whereas Type II has end-plate thickening of the vertebrae (Rugger-Jersey spine) and endobones in the pelvis. Both types are strictly family related

Flurbiprofen enhances growth and cancellous and cortical bone accumulation in rapidly growing long bones.

The effects of flurbiprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, on bone growth was studied by static and dynamic histomorphometry in immature (28 days old) male Sprague-Dawley rats. Flurbiprofen at 0, 0.02, 0.1, 0.5 or 2.5 mg/kg/d doses was given subcutaneously daily for 21 days. The 0.1 and 0.5 mg/kg/d doses were most effective in stimulating longitudinal and radial bone growth and enhancing the accumulation of cancellous and cortical bone. Proximal tibial longitudinal bone growth rate, growth plate thickness, and periosteal bone formation rate were increased 30-40%, while cortical bone

Clinical Outcomes of Minimally Invasive Fixation with Pre-Bent Elastic Stable Intramedullary Nails for the Treatment of Distal Radius Metaphyseal Diaphysis Junction Fractures in Children.

OBJECTIVE: Although mini-plate fixation is an attractive treatment option for distal radius metaphyseal diaphysis junction (DRMDJ) fractures in children, the benefits of minimally invasive fixation (MIF) with pre-bent elastic stable intramedullary nails (MIF) remain underexplored. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of MIF administration in children with DRMDJ fractures. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled 40 patients with DRMDJ fractures who underwent MIF or mini-plate fixation from January 2016 to January 2021. Radiographic parameters, such as palmar inclina

[Unusual neoplasm in the scrotum].

A clinical case of scrotal atavism in the form of bone plate, which simulated neoplasm of scrotal organs and has not been previously described, is presented in the article. In our opinion, the tumor is a vestige of Bakulyum, an organ, which disappeared in Homo sapiens. The patient was successfully operated in the outpatient surgical department with good functional and long-term results. After 1-year follow-up, there were no complaints or recurrence. The patient had normal sexual function.

Post-traumatic nonunion of the forearm in adults.

Post-traumatic forearm nonunion in adults is a rare but formidable complication. Therapeutic objectives must combine bone union with restoration of radial anatomy and pronator curvature, in order to regain pronosupination function and ideal hand positioning. The rate of nonunion in forearm diaphyseal fractures, with or without infection, is in the range of 2-10%. Failed healing of these fractures is often due to an inadequate surgical technique. The objectives of the clinical and diagnostic assessment are to characterize the trauma and its initial management, the nonunion and the patient. AP,

Digital technology-assisted minimally invasive removal of odontoma with high impacted maxillary canine by double-fenestration technique: a case report.

Odontoma is a hamartoma or developmental malformation of dental tissues and often causes delayed or impacted permanent teeth. This paper reports a case of surgical removal of an odontoma that is closely attached to the labial bone plait and examines the extraction of accompanying high-impacted maxillary canine beside the nose and maxillary sinus. Digital technology was used in reconstructing a part of a patient's maxilla, odontoma, related teeth, and other adjacent anatomical structures, accurately determine the lesion boundary, and design an optimal surgical plan. The minimally invasive extra

Immediate Implant and Customized Healing Abutment Promotes Tissues Regeneration: A 5-Year Clinical Report.

Significant alveolar bone resorption follows tooth extraction. Immediate implant placement alone is not sufficient to prevent this phenomenon. The present study aims at reporting the clinical and radiologic outcome of an immediate implant with a custom healing abutment. In this clinical case, a fractured upper first premolar was replaced by an immediate implant and a customized healing abutment designed on the perimeter of the extractive alveolus. After 3 months, the implant was restored. The facial and interdental soft tissue was maintained with appreciable success after 5 years. The pre-and

[Metastatic disease in long bones : Review of surgical treatment options].

Surgery in metastatic bone disease is currently the most frequent type of surgery in orthopedic oncology. Improved survival rates and an increasing incidence of bone metastasis have led to an increase in complications caused by metastatic disease, such as pathological fractures or hardware failure after operative treatment. Although surgery of metastatic lesions remains a palliative therapy concept, because of sufficient therapy for the primary carcinomas, tumor-specific-oriented follow-up protocols and a variation in the prognosis for the individual entities, an individually adapted treatment

Maxillofacial growth in children with unilateral cleft lip and palate following secondary alveolar bone grafting: an interim evaluation.

This study evaluates the effect of alveolar bone grafting on the maxillofacial growth in children of mixed dentition with unilateral complete cleft lip-cleft palate. Twenty patients received an iliac crest alveolar bone graft between the ages of 6 years 10 months and 10 years 10 months, whereas 20 matched controls between the ages of 6 years 11 months and 10 years 6 months did not. Geometric morphometric assessments were used to localize alterations between the initial and final cephalographs in the two groups of cleft children, using Procrustes analysis and thin-plate spline analysis, in addi

Transient benign osteopetrosis in a calf persistently infected with bovine virus diarrhoea virus.

A two-day-old Simmental calf was admitted suffering from a fracture of the right femur. The radiographs showed striking changes in all bones, evident as alter-noting zones of dense and less dense tissue (bone-in-bone) in the right femur and striped densities in the vertebral bodies. A stainless steel plate was used to repair the fracture, which healed well. The calf developed normally but was diagnosed as persistently infected with bovine virus diarrhoea (BVD) virus. It was kept in isolation and examined physically and radiographically during the following 13 months. The radiographic changes d

Diagnostic imaging findings in lame Warmblood horses with bone injuries of the medial proximal phalanx glenoid cavity.

This retrospective study aims to describe baseline and follow-up imaging findings in subchondral and trabecular bone damage occurring outside of the sagittal groove in the proximal phalanx (P1) glenoid in a case series of lame Warmblood horses. Thirteen lame horses (16 forelimbs) with standing magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) evidence of nonsagittal groove glenoid subchondral and trabecular bone injury of P1 as the main lesion were included. All injuries were located at the medial aspect of the P1 glenoid. At sMRI, changes included subchondral bone plate thickening and trabecular sclerosis, b

Biomechanical comparison of minimally invasive fixation for sanders II calcaneal fractures: a multi-position finite element study from rigid internal fixation to elastic kirschner wire configuration.

INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive surgical treatment is increasingly favored for intra-articular displaced calcaneal fractures with a high risk of soft tissue complications. The calcaneus is the largest tarsal bone in the foot and plays a critical role in weight-bearing and gait mechanics; displaced fractures often result in significant functional impairment. Sanders Type II fractures, characterized by a single major fracture line that divides the posterior articular surface into two major bone fragments, are one of the most common subtypes and present a therapeutic challenge in balancing mecha

Single-stage 360° Reconstruction in a Case of Solitary Vertebral Plasmacytoma of L3 vertebra - A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a benign intraosseous lesion, usually seen before the age of 20 years and is a lesion filled with blood cavities causing a blowout distension of the bone. It constitutes to about 1% of benign bone tumors. Although benign, a large lesion is liable to develop pathological fracture, so needs prompt addressal. Surgical resection or curettage in large lesions can lead to bone defects, deformities, and even functional abnormalities, especially in children. This article describes a large aggressive ABC of proximal metaphyseodiaphyseal region of proximal hum

Arthrodesis of the Ankle.

About 90 % of all cases of painful posttraumatic ankle arthritis can be very successfully treated with a minor invasive ankle arthrodesis technique by using a small anterior approach and a fixation with four 6. 5 mm screws of which the posteromedial and transfibular one are inserted percutaneously. The results with this standardized procedure have been reported previously as excellent and good in a mid-term run of 6 years (34). This technique leads to a high union rate of 99% (92 of 93) with rapid bone healing within 8 ± 2 weeks, it causes a low minor complication rate of 8 % and enables a sig

Correction of the mineralization defect in hyp mice treated with protease inhibitors CA074 and pepstatin.

Increased expression of several osteoblastic proteases and MEPE (a bone matrix protein) occurs in X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets (hyp). This is associated with an increased release of a protease-resistant MEPE peptide (ASARM peptide), a potent inhibitor of mineralization. Cathepsin B cleaves MEPE releasing ASARM peptide and hyp osteoblast/osteocyte cells hypersecrete cathepsin D, an activator of cathepsin B. Our aims were to determine whether cathepsin inhibitors correct the mineralization defect in vivo and whether hyp-bone ASARM peptide levels are reduced after protease treatment. Normal

In Situ Construction of Morphologically Different Hydroxyapatite-Mineralized Structures on a Three-Dimensional Bionic Chitin Scaffold.

Slow healing at the tendon-bone interface is a prominent factor in the failure of tendon repair surgeries. The development of functional biomaterials with 3D gradient structures is urgently needed to improve tendon-bone integration. The crystalline form of hydroxyapatite (HAP) has a crucial impact on cell behavior, which directly influences protein adsorption, such as bone morphogenetic protein 2, the adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation with cells. This work aimed to generate gradient mineral structures in situ by stabilizing calcium and phosphate ions using a polymer-induc

What Is the Best Treatment of the Femoral Shaft Nonunion after Intramedullary Nailing? A Systematic Review.

Nonunion (NU) is one of the most feared complications of femoral shaft fracture treatment. Femoral shaft fracture treatment is often linked with poor bone stock and reduced bone metabolism. In this paper, the goal is to carefully analyze the best treatment options for patients who developed nonunion after the intramedullary nailing of a femoral shaft fracture. A systematic review of the literature available in the PubMed, EMBASE and Cochran library databases was carried out, and 16 studies were included. Exclusion criteria included case reports and case series that do not have data about clini
