The presence of endocrine-disrupting compounds in influent and effluent water samples from four waste water treatment plants located in Italy was studied. A proteomic approach has been used to establish a proteome map and differentiate between the protein composition of tonsils from patients with chronic tonsillitis (CT) and that of tonsils with hyperplasia (HPL). This work describes the problems that occur during routine multi-step determinations of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which can be present at trace levels in water, and identifies sources of analyte losses at particular steps during the analytical procedure. A versatile method for measuring the partition coefficients of volatile analytes with an aqueous pseudophase using headspace gas chromatography is reported. A "three-phase" model accounts for all equilibria present in the system, including the partitioning of the analyte in the gas and aqueous phases to the pseudophase. The aim of this study was to compare the influence and feasibility of two common extracting agents (50% v/v HCl and 50% v/v HNO3) on the leaching of Hg from soils.
