Inducing and measuring identity levels in professional rugby players during immersion in an interactive virtual environment.

During a game, players experience substantial affective fluctuations, particularly through cognitive appraisal processes, which notably involves self-categorisation process. However, designing a mental training programme using the contextual elements of a game is still a challenge. Moreover, social contexts can be recreated in virtual reality and it has been demonstrated that people tend to have realistic affective and behavioural reactions to it. In this study, we recreated, in virtual reality, one of the key contexts that players can encounter during a rugby game, a try. After an embodiment

Compensating Heart Failure Cardiologists: Is the RVU Model the Right Model?

Physician compensation models in the United States are diverse, shaped by practice settings, specialties, and institutional factors. A notable shift in academic medical centers has been the transition from salary-based compensation to relative value unit (RVU)-based models. While this shift may align compensation with clinical productivity and facilitate budgetary planning, it has profound implications for physician satisfaction, burnout, and clinical practice, particularly in primarily cognitive/nonprocedural based specialties like advanced heart failure (AHF). This article explores the benef

Looking to the brain to improve energy efficiency of AI.

Modern artificial intelligence (AI) systems have achieved remarkable capabilities, but at an extraordinary energy cost. Training and running large-scale models can consume vast resources, posing environmental, economic, and societal challenges. In contrast, biological brains perform lifelong learning, adaptive control, and flexible reasoning using orders of magnitude less energy for learning and adaptation over a lifetime. What accounts for this difference - and how can it guide future AI development? In this review, we identify key biological principles that support energy-efficient capacitie

Eight-session manualized cognitive behavioral therapy for anxiety and depression symptoms in perimenopause and postmenopause: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Mood and anxiety symptoms at the menopause transition are common. However, most cognitive-behavioral treatments focused on perimenopause center on managing physical symptoms such as hot flashes, and not mood symptoms. In this case series, we assessed the impact of a CBT intervention program on anxiety and depressive symptoms among individuals in perimenopause or postmenopause, who reported mood symptoms. METHODS: The intervention included eight 45-minute sessions of individual CBT with a clinical psychologist, and included CBT skills training (eg, behavioral activation, reframing n

Optimizing treatment for depressed parents of children with emotional and behavioral disorders: A multi-site feasibility trial.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral parent training (BPT) programs are effective for reducing disruptive behavior of many children with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) and improving skills and competencies of their parents. However, these interventions are not sufficiently effective for parents who themselves have depression. This study assessed the feasibility of the Addressing Depression and Positive Parenting Techniques (ADAPT) Program-a novel BPT that includes aspects of cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy. We identified whether recruitment was possible, attendance wa

Association between structural disconnection and early cognitive impairment after acute ischemic stroke: A network-based statistical study.

Post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) affects up to 75% of patients acutely and strongly predicts dementia, yet the acute-phase structural network signature remains unclear. We included 589 first-ever acute ischemic stroke patients (≤ 7 days) and classified them into PSCI and non-PSCI groups using the acute-phase MoCA. Individualized structural disconnection matrices (135 nodes) were constructed from DWI lesion masks and the HCP-842 normative tractography atlas (derived from 842 healthy adults), representing indirect disconnectome estimates rather than patient-specific DTI tractography. Mindfulness-based stress reduction and loneliness in older adults: two randomized controlled trials.

OBJECTIVES: Loneliness is one of the most robust risk factors for morbidity and accelerated mortality among older adults, and effective interventions are needed. However, interventions to reduce loneliness have shown limited success, especially in this population. Indeed, research suggests that simply increasing social contact might not combat loneliness; instead, addressing the cognitive and emotional mechanisms of loneliness might be more effective. Here, in two randomized controlled trials (RCT), we explored whether mindfulness training could reduce loneliness. METHODS: This study tested a

ADMGCN: graph convolutional network for Alzheimer's disease diagnosis with a meta-learning paradigm.

MOTIVATION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by memory loss and cognitive decline. While graph convolutional networks (GCNs) have emerged as popular tools for AD diagnosis due to their ability to handle structural information and fuse multi-modal features, deep learning approaches face significant challenges including the requirement for large datasets and sensitivity to unbalanced label distributions in AD research. To address these limitations and enhance the flexibility of GCNs, we propose a graph convolutional network based on the meta-learning paradig
