Listeria spp. isolated from different food products and collected from 12 Brazilian states were sent to the Laboratory of Bacterial Zoonoses (Oswaldo Cruz Institute, Brazil) for identification. The aims of this study were to characterize these isolates, from 1990 to 2012, by using biochemical, morphological, and serotyping tests, and to analyze the distribution of L. monocytogenes serotypes on different food products and geographical locations. Severe alcoholic hepatitis is a life-threatening liver disease. Although corticosteroid treatment is recommended and improves survival, mortality remains high and 35% of patients die within 6 months. There is no available medical treatment for patients who do not respond to corticosteroids. A new randomized pilot trial shows that the administration of the cytokine granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) improves liver function and 3-month survival in patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis. These results suggest a new therapeutic approach for severe alcoholic hepatitis.

The proportions of broiler caeca and carcass rinse samples positive for Campylobacter spp. within broiler flocks were determined. The effects of total organic carbon and biofilm on microbial corrosion were quantified using serum bottles in a 2 x 2 factorial design. Both organic carbon and biofilm bacteria had a significant effect on the iron corrosion rate, irrespective of the levels of the other variable (p = 0.05). There was no evidence of interaction between organic carbon and biofilm bacteria. Within the tested levels, the addition of exogenous organic carbon increased the corrosion rate by an average of 3.838 mg dm(-2) day(-1) (mdd), but the presence of biofilm bacteria decreased the rate by an average of 2.305 mdd.

A simple and rapid assay for the determination of serum bactericidal activity was developed and evaluated in 125 clinical isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae. The serum reactivity against these isolates was concomitantly determined by the conventional viable count technique in order to compare the efficacy of the two techniques.
