Quality of life in patients with alopecia areata: a hospital-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggest that alopecia areata (AA) may significantly affect patient quality of life (QoL). There are no studies that assess QoL in Serbian AA patients. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess the impact of AA on patients' QoL in comparison to patients affected by other skin diseases and to determine the impact of sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of AA patients on QoL. METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study of 60 patients with AA was conducted at the Clinic of Dermatovenereology, Clinical Center of Serbia, Belgrade between April 2012 and June 20

Association between blood levels of PCDDs/PCDFs/dioxin-like PCBs and history of allergic and other diseases in the Japanese population.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies reported that exposure to dioxins was associated with an increased risk of various diseases in general populations. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine the association between levels of dioxins in blood and allergic and other diseases. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study on 1,063 men and 1,201 women (aged 15-76 years), who were living throughout Japan and not occupationally exposed to dioxins, during 2002-2010. In fasting blood samples, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and dioxin-like PCBs (D

Rhinovirus-induced wheezing in infancy--the first sign of childhood asthma?

BACKGROUND: Although known as common causes of upper respiratory infections, rhinoviruses, enteroviruses, and corona-viruses are poorly studied as inducers of wheezing in infants, and their possible role in the development of childhood asthma has not been investigated. OBJECTIVE: The purposes of this study were to assess the occurrence of RV, enterovirus, and coronavirus infections in wheezing infants and to evaluate the association of these viral findings with early school-age asthma. METHODS: In 1999, outcome in relation to asthma was studied in 82 of 100 initially recruited children who h

L-selectin or ICAM-1 deficiency reduces an immediate-type hypersensitivity response by preventing mast cell recruitment in repeated elicitation of contact hypersensitivity.

Repeated Ag exposure results in a shift in the time course of contact hypersensitivity (CH) from a typical delayed-type to an immediate-type response followed by a late phase reaction. Chronic CH responses are clinically relevant to human skin allergic diseases, such as atopic dermatitis, that are usually caused by repeated stimulation with environmental Ags. Chronic inflammatory responses result in part from infiltrating leukocytes. To determine the role of leukocyte adhesion molecules in chronic inflammation, chronic CH responses were assessed in mice lacking L-selectin, ICAM-1, or both adhe

Egg hypersensitivity and measles-mumps-rubella vaccine administration.

Because reports have described egg-sensitive individuals in whom anaphylaxis developed after measles vaccination, current recommendations include delaying administration of egg-derived vaccines until skin testing can be performed. Specifically, the 1988 Red Book recommends skin testing via scratch, prick, or puncture with 1:10 dilution of the vaccine and, if the result is negative, intradermal testing is suggested. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the likelihood of reaction to measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine in patients with documented egg sensitivity and to delineate the efficacy

Timing of Food Introduction and Allergy Prevention: An Update.

Recommendations about allergy prevention through diet are rapidly changing. In just the past several years, multiple organizations have provided updated guidance and recommendations about infant feeding based on recent studies and meta-analyses. In addition to the increased number of studies supporting the benefit of early introduction of allergenic foods, in particular peanut and egg, recent studies demonstrate that infant and maternal diet diversity may also reduce risk of food allergy and atopy. Skin emollients have not been found to be helpful in prevention of food allergy, and more eviden

Efficacy of Histaglobulin in Allergic Diseases: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis with Implications for Allergic Rhinitis.

Histaglobulin (histamine/immunoglobulin complex) has been used for decades as a non-allergen-specific immunotherapy for allergic diseases including allergic rhinitis, chronic urticaria, and atopic dermatitis. Despite growing clinical interest, no meta-analysis has synthesized the available evidence. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of histaglobulin across allergic diseases, with particular emphasis on implications for allergic rhinitis management. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were searched from inception to March 2026. S

Editor's Highlights-September 2026.

Psychodermatology, adolescent mental health, quality-of-life measurement, financial toxicity, and teledermatology all show how dermatology increasingly extends beyond visible lesions. The September issue of the Journal addresses the psychological complexity of aesthetic and medical consultations, the psychiatric burden of atopic dermatitis in adolescence, limitations of a commonly used quality-of-life measurement, the financial toxicity experienced by patients with hidradenitis suppurativa, and the still uneven implementation of teledermatology and teledermoscopy in Europe. Together, these pap

Mast cell-sensory neuron crosstalk in allergic diseases.

Mast cells (MCs) are tissue-resident immune cells, well-positioned at the host-environment interface for detecting external antigens and playing a critical role in mobilizing innate and adaptive immune responses. Sensory neurons are afferent neurons innervating most areas of the body but especially in the periphery, where they sense external and internal signals and relay information to the brain. The significance of MC-sensory neuron communication is now increasingly becoming recognized, especially because both cell types are in close physical proximity at the host-environment interface and a

[Dermatology. New uses for JAK inhibitors in dermatology: a panacea, but at what price?].

Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKi) are small molecules which prevent the phosphorylation of JAKs, thereby blocking the intracellular phosphorylation cascade required for the transcription of several cytokines. In addition to approved indications that have been extensively studied, including atopic dermatitis, alopecia areata, vitiligo and psoriasis, JAKi are also proposed off-label, included topically, in several dermatological conditions where standard treatments are often disappointing, such as hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), extensive morphea, cutaneous sarcoidosis and lichen planus. On the othe

Oclacitinib 10 years later: lessons learned and directions for the future.

Oclacitinib was approved in the United States 10 years ago for the management of atopic dermatitis (AD) and allergic skin disease in dogs. Many studies and case reports have been published in the past 10 years on the efficacy and safety of this medication, both at labeled doses to treat allergic dogs and off label to treat other diseases and given to other species. Concerns and confusion have occurred for both clinicians and owners regarding the long-term safety of this drug. The purpose of this review is to present the current knowledge on the efficacy, speed of action, effects on the immune

Long-term dupilumab therapy in Netherton syndrome with severe atopic manifestations: Case report and review of the literature.

We herein present a unique patient of Netherton syndrome (NS) with ichthyosis linearis circumflexa (ILC) lesions associated with severe atopic manifestations since infancy, showing different responses of atopic and ILC lesions to a 2-year dupilumab therapy. The atopic eczematous lesions and pruritus healed remarkably, dramatically improving the patient's quality of life, whilst the scalp hair showed a clinical and light microscopic improvement. The additional recovery in axillary/pubic/extremity hair growth, sweating and nail growth in the presented case was not previously reported in NS patie

[History and physycal examination].

The most effective method for diagnosing food allergy is the clinical history, which includes anamnesis and physical examination. The anamnesis must include a directed and detailed questioning, and together with the physical examination, it will provide the necessary data to guide the diagnosis and suggest whether the pathophysiology is mediated or not by IgE, which is relevant for the selection and interpretation of the tests. specific and establish the accurate diagnosis, in addition to evaluating the possibility of distinguishing between the different differential diagnoses. Topical non-pharmacological treatment of eczema: an Italian consensus.

Eczematous diseases (contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, hand eczema) are among the most frequent findings in dermatological clinical practice. A large body of evidence exists on structural and functional skin barrier damage in eczematous diseases, and on the importance of interventions aimed to repair such damage. While there is substantial agreement on pharmacological treatment, more sparse data are available on role, indications and usefulness of topical non-pharmacological treatments, despite significant research and progress in the composition and technology of emollients, cleansers an…

ImmUniverse Consortium: Multi-omics integrative approach in personalized medicine for immune-mediated inflammatory diseases.

Immune mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) are a heterogeneous group of debilitating, multifactorial and unrelated conditions featured by a dysregulated immune response leading to destructive chronic inflammation. The immune dysregulation can affect various organ systems: gut (e.g., inflammatory bowel disease), joints (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis), skin (e.g., psoriasis, atopic dermatitis), resulting in significant morbidity, reduced quality of life, increased risk for comorbidities, and premature death. As there are no reliable disease progression and therapy response biomarkers currently a

A Review of Adverse Reactions to Biologics Used in Allergy-Immunology Practice.

Biologic agents have become an integral therapeutic option for practicing allergists-immunologists for the management of asthma, atopic dermatitis, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, and various immunologic conditions. As these agents vary considerably from traditional small-molecule drugs, various adverse reactions have been noted. A different approach must be used to classify these reactions beyond the classic Gell-Coombs classification system as it does not capture many of the adverse events seen with biologic therapy. This article addresses the available literature on proposed class

Evaluation of Skin Prick Test Reading Time at 10 versus 15 min in Young Infants.

INTRODUCTION: The optimal time point for reading the mean wheal diameter (MWD) of a skin prick test (SPT) in infants is not established. We aimed to assess if either of two reading time points of the SPT, 10 or 15 min, was superior to detect allergic sensitization (AS) in 6-month-old infants. METHODS: In 1,431 6-month-old infants from the population-based Preventing Atopic Dermatitis and ALLergies in children (PreventADALL) mother-child cohort, the SPT was performed with standard solutions for egg, cow's milk, peanut, wheat, soy, birch, timothy, dog, and cat. The MWD was measured after 10 and
