Homocystinuria was diagnosed in 15 (0.59%) cases on screening 2560 children for aminoacidopathies. The commonest presenting features were ectopia lentis (95%) and mental retardation (86%). Other features included, dental anomalies (40%), osteoporosis (40%), behavioral problems (33%) and arachnodactyly (13%). Diagnosis was confirmed by iodoplatinate staining of one dimensional paper chromatography of urine. All the 15 cases of homocystinuria were first treated with high dose oral pyridoxine. Efforts to ensure food safety through legislation have been only partially successful, and the prevalence of foodborne disease is increasing in most countries. Health education on a large scale is needed to raise the level of public awareness of the factors leading to the spread of these diseases. The best way to do this is through the primary health care system, basing activities on both scientific knowledge and local food-related customs and behaviour.

Two hundred thirty-three newly enrolled medical and nursing students at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, were tested for antibodies to measles and mumps. The life course of affective episodes was determined for 95 consecutively admitted patients from eastern India fulfilling RDC criteria for definite mania during the current episode, using SADS-L interviews. There was a significantly greater frequency of manic compared to depressive relapses. Presentation as recurrent mania was very common. The total numbers of affective and manic episodes were significantly higher among those with recurrent mania and in cases where the first illness episode was manic.

The pupils of 5 elementary schools in the Dembia-District in Northethiopia were inspected in serial examinations. The transmissible skin diseases head lice infestation, tinea capitis, impetigo contagiosa and verrucae vulgares are very common among the unselected children (5 to 15 years old). Only 16% of all children had not any infectious skin disease. The investigations showed the unfortunate conditions of the poor hygiene those are existing in the rural areas of a developing country in the tropics.
