Pulmonary fibrosis is one of the most severe consequences of exposure to paraquat, an herbicide that causes rapid alveolar inflammation and epithelial cell damage. Paraquat is known to induce toxicity in cells by stimulating oxygen utilization via redox cycling and the generation of reactive oxygen intermediates. The role of glutathione and other antioxidant systems in the response of Escherichia coli to acetamidophenol (paracetamol), rifampicin, and chloramphenicol was studied. A new family of weak K(+) channel toxins (designated kappa-KTx) with a novel "bi-helical" scaffold has recently been characterized from Heterometrus fulvipes (Scorpionidae) venom. Acetaminophen (AAP) overdose causes formation of peroxynitrite in centrilobular hepatocytes. Effect of peritoneal dialysis fluids on glutathione (GSH/GSSG) level in human peritoneal mesothelial cells was tested in in vitro experiments. Measuring conduction velocity in slower fibres (CVSF), through a partial antidromic block (Hopf-Seppäläinen method), allows estimating the dispersal of conduction velocity in motor fibres by the difference between the maximal motor conduction velocity (MCV) and CVSF. Investigations performed in workers exposed to medium concentrations of carbon disulphide show difference between MCV and CVSF as providing a more sensitive indicator for early diagnosis of peripheral neuropathies than MCV.
