[Rules on acupoint selection and treatment for epigastric pain based on the data mining of ancient acupuncture-moxibustion prescriptions].

The rules of acupoint selection and treatment were identified and discovered from the collected ancient acupuncture-moxibustion prescriptions recorded the earliest for epigastric pain. The database of ancient acupuncture-moxibustion prescriptions for epigastric pain was set up using Excel2016 software. After the disease term, etiology, pathogenesis, symptoms and acupoints were normalized, the underlying multi-dimensional correlation among the elements of acupuncture-moxibustion was explored, using the frequency statistics and the association rule of Apriori algorithm. In the ancient time, in t

Orthotopic forelimb transplantation in a Yucatan minipig model: Anatomic and in vivo study.

INTRODUCTION: Above elbow transplants represent 19% of the upper extremity transplants. Previous large-animal models have been too distal or heterotopic, did not use immunosuppression and had short survival. We hypothesize that an orthotopic forelimb transplant model, under standard immunosuppression, is feasible and can be used to address questions on peri-transplant ischemia reperfusion injury, and post-transplantation vascular, immunologic, infectious, and functional outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four forelimbs were used for anatomical studies. Four mock transplants were performed to es

Anterior medial minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis for humeral shaft fractures shows superior early shoulder and elbow function compared to locking compression plate: A retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Humeral shaft fractures are a common injury of the upper limb, with the primary surgical treatment modality being the locking compression plate (LCP) technique. The advent of Anterior medial minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) technology has led to its gradual implementation in clinical practice. However, the efficacy and long-term outcomes of MIPO require further investigation. The objective of this study is to compare the therapeutic effects of LCP and MIPO in the management of humeral shaft fractures. METHODS: The present study conducted a retrospective review of p

Prospective Evaluation of Two Cohorts of Non-Operatively Treated Patients with Displaced vs. Minimally and Non-Displaced Distal Radius Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures (DRFs) in the elderly are common. Recently, the efficacy of operative treatment of displaced DRFs in patients above 65 years of age has been questioned and it has been suggested that non-operative treatment should be the gold standard. However, the complications and functional outcome of displaced vs. minimally and non-displaced DRFs in the elderly has not been evaluated yet. The aim of the present study was to compare non-operatively treated displaced DRFs vs. minimally and non-displaced DRFs in terms of complications, PROMs, grip strength and range of moti

Medial Ulnar Collateral Ligament Repair With Augmentation: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Preclinical Studies.

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction is the gold standard treatment for medial ulnar collateral ligament (MUCL) injuries. However, recent studies show a successful and renewed interest in direct suture repair, particularly in young athletes. Repair augmentation with a suture tape may provide greater stability, enabling healing of the MUCL while protecting the repair at higher valgus loads. PURPOSE: To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis on whether MUCL repair with augmentation provides a similar biomechanical profile to the traditional MUCL reconstruction. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review. M

How to manage scaphoid waist fractures? Introduction of pragmatic imaging efficient pathway and literature review of the recent evidence.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: The scaphoid bone sustains about 90 % of carpal bone fractures and is the second-highest bone at risk of post-traumatic osteonecrosis. Delayed diagnosis and treatment could lead to non-union and advanced carpal bones collapse. This study aimed to introduce an imaging efficient and practical scaphoid waist fracture management pathway (SWFMP) and measure its efficacy in clinical practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The SWFMP was introduced in January 2020. Suspected occult fractures were approached by early orthopaedic clinical assessment and subsequent urgent MRI scan w

The Prevalence and Clinical Implications of Comorbid Back Pain in Shoulder Instability: A Multicenter Orthopaedic Outcomes Network (MOON) Shoulder Instability Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Understanding predictors of pain is critical, as recent literature shows that comorbid back pain is an independent risk factor for worse functional and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) as well as increased opioid dependence after total joint arthroplasty. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether comorbid back pain would be predictive of pain or self-reported instability symptoms at the time of stabilization surgery. We hypothesized that comorbid back pain will correlate with increased pain at the time of surgery as well as with worse scores on shoulder

A comparative study of fixation methods in adults with two-thirds distal isolated ulnar shaft fractures with a minimum of 2 year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Adult isolated ulnar shaft fractures (IUSF) are rare. There remains a need to establish the best methods to manage these fractures. The aim of this study was to compare two forms of treatment for IUSF: intramedullary stabilization by k-wire (IMF) versus Open Reduction Internal Fixation by plating (ORIF), in order to identify differences in clinical (1) and radiological outcomes (2), as well as comparative costs (3). HYPOTHESIS: The hypothesis of this study was assessing whether intramedullary stabilization was as feasible as plating in the treatment of isolated ulnar shaft fractur

Technologically-advanced assessment of upper-limb spasticity: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Spasticity is a muscle disorder associated with upper motor neuron syndrome occurring in neurological disorders, such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury and others. It influences the patient's rehabilitation, interfering with function, limiting independence, causing pain and producing secondary impairments, such as contractures or other complications. Due to the heterogeneity of clinical signs of spasticity, there is no agreement on the most appropriate assessment and measurement modality for the evaluation of treatment outcomes. AIM: The aim of this article is to p

Grip strength measurements at two different wrist extension positions in chronic lateral epicondylitis-comparison of involved vs. uninvolved side in athletes and non athletes: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Lateral epicondylitis is a common sports injury of the elbow caused due to altered muscle activation during repetitive wrist extension in many athletic and non-athletic endeavours. The amount of muscle activity and timing of contraction eventually is directly dependent upon joint position during the activity. The purpose of our study was to compare the grip strength in athletes with lateral epicondylalgia in two different wrist extension positions and compare them between involved and uninvolved sides of athletes and non-athletes. METHODS: An assessor-blinded case-control study of

Occupational upper extremity disorders in the federal workforce. Prevalence, health care expenditures, and patterns of work disability.

Upper extremity disorders (UEDs) account for a significant number of work-related illnesses in the US workforce. Little information exists on the distribution of UEDs, their associated health care and indemnity costs, or patterns of work disability. The study presented is an analysis of upper extremity claims within the federal workforce. In this study, the universe consisted of all claims accepted by the US Department of Labor, Office of Workers' Compensation Programs (OWCP), from October 1, 1993, through September 30, 1994. A total of 185,927 claims of notices of injury were processed during

Pediatric Supracondylar Humerus Fractures: The Utility of Post-Mobilization Follow-Up.

INTRODUCTION: There is currently no universally accepted follow-up protocol for pediatric supracondylar humerus fractures (pSCHFs), but post-mobilization follow-ups are commonly scheduled to evaluate range of motion and the presence of deformities. Recent practice has trended towards enhancing efficiency by reducing unnecessary clinic visits for uncomplicated fractures. This study examines follow-up practices after pSCHFs at our multicenter institution, evaluating the utility of post-mobilization follow-up visits, and determining appropriate criteria for safe early discharge. METHODS: All con
