OBJECTIVE: Arthrodesis of the ankle joint in proper position (neutral position in respect to flexion/extension, 5 degrees external rotation, 0-5 degrees of valgus). Pain-free weight bearing of the affected limb.
INDICATIONS: Painful osteoarthritis of the ankle joint resistant to conservative approaches even in the presence of poor bone quality of the distal tibia such as after pilon fractures and osteoporosis. Failure of other methods of internal fixation.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Osteitis. Partial necrosis of the talar dome. Medullary canal of tibia not patent.

The medical records of 186 patients seeking treatment for landmine injuries in the authors' region between 1993 and 2001 were evaluated. Of these patients 13 died of accompanying complications. Ten (10) patients with general body trauma and upper limb trauma were excluded from the study. Between 1980 and 1997, 27 patients underwent shoulder arthroplasty because of pain or functional impairment due to a proximal humeral nonunion. Twenty-five of the 27 shoulders with a mean 6-year follow-up period (range, 2-15 years) were included in the study. There were 19 women and 6 men, with a mean age of 65 years.
