Mirror therapy (MT) is a valuable method for enhancing motor recovery in poststroke hemiparesis. The technique utilizes the mirror-illusion created by the movement of sound limb that is perceived as the paretic limb. MT is a simple and economical technique than can stimulate the brain noninvasively. The intervention unquestionably has neural foundation. But the underlying neural mechanisms inducing motor recovery are still unclear. In this review, the neural-modulation due to MT has been explored. Multiple areas of the brain such as the occipital lobe, dorsal frontal area and corpus callosum a

The most common neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., developmental dyslexia (DD), autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)) ha … areas are unquestionably linked to DCD: cerebellum, basal ganglia, parietal lobe, and parts of the frontal lobe (medial orbitofrontal cortex and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex). However, research has been too sparse and studies have suffered from several limitations that constitute a serious obstacle to address the question of a well-established neural signat …

Heavy prenatal alcohol exposure causes permanent structural alterations to the brain and can lead to numerous cognitive and behavioral outco … ve been observed, with narrowing in the parietal region and reduced brain growth in portions of the frontal lobe. Commensurating with these anomalies, volumetric and tissue density findings cite disproportionate reductions in the parietal lobe, cerebellar vermis, corpus callosum, and the caudate nucleus, suggesting that certain areas of the brain may be especi …

A flashbulb memory (FM) is a vivid, enduring memory for how one learned about a surprising, shocking event. It thus involves memory for the source of event information, as opposed to memory for the event itself. Which brain regions are involved in FM, however, is uncertain. Although medial temporal lobe/diencephalic (MTL/D) damage impairs content or item memory, frontal lobe (FL) damage has been associated with impaired source memory. One would therefore expect that FM should depend on the FLs, although two recent reports do not support this idea. In the current study, we examined memory for t…

This article focuses on neuropsychological functioning at moderate, high, and extreme altitude. This article summarizes the available literature on respiratory, circulatory, and brain determinants on adaptation to hypoxia that are hypothesized to be responsible for neuropsychological impairment due to altitude. Effects on sleep are also described. At central level, periventricular focal damages (leuko-araiosis) and cortical atrophy have been observed. Frontal lobe and middle temporal lobe alterations are also presumed. A review is provided regarding the effects on psychomotor performance, perc…

High-resolution MR imaging and spectroscopic imaging were used to study differences in proton spectra between cortical gray matter and subcortical white matter in 23 normal volunteers using a 1.5 T scanner and surface coil receivers. A point-resolved spectroscopy (PRESS) volume with an 8 x 8 x 8 phase-encoding matrix was used to acquire over 1900 0.09-0.2 cc spectral voxels. The high-resolution (0.7 x 0.7 x 0.8 mm3 or 0.8 x 0.8 x 1 mm3) images were corrected for the surface coil reception profile and segmented into cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and gray and white matter to correlate with the spect

A 62-year-old woman with pulmonary tuberculosis was admitted to our hospital. She was completely neurologically free at admission and her CSF was normal. Brain MRI with Gd-DTPA enhancement demonstrated two mass lesions with ring-enhancement in the left temporal lobe and the right frontal lobe. The left temporal lesion had a bright central core with hypointense periphery on T2 weighted image. Extended hyperintense area was observed around this lesions, which represented brain edema. On T1 weighted image, the central core was demonstrated hypointense and its periphery was isointense. After start…

A rare case of multiple traumatic aneurysms, arising from the distal anterior cerebral artery (ACA), associated with a diffuse axonal injury is presented. An 18-year-old male sustained a frontal impact injury in a traffic accident on February 19, 1988. He immediately lost consciousness and was transported to a local hospital where his Glasgow Coma Scale score was 6. A computed tomographic scan showed a traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage extending from the corpus callosum to the left parietal lobe. With conservative treatment, he gradually regained consciousness and was referred to our hospital

We observed a 55 y.o. right-handed woman, who was suspected of splenium tumor (glioblastoma?) by CT scan and presented bilateral crossed visuomotor ataxia proposed by Rondot et al. Left unilateral apraxia and agraphia were not found, but left unilateral hemialexia was evident by tachistoscopic examinations. In regard to bilateral crossed visuomotor ataxia, we suggested that at least there might be three possible hypotheses about its realization mechanism. (1) Callosal lesion might disconnect heterotopical fibers which runs from one occipital lobe to another frontal lobe. (2) Integrated informa…

Apathy is the most commonly observed behavioral disturbance in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and has been suggested to be frontally mediated. Neuritic plaque (NP) and neurofibrillary tangle (NFT) counts were performed for 8 brain regions in 29 subjects with definite AD. Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) for autopsied subjects was obtained from questioning of caregivers of subjects included in the study. Chronic apathy and total NPI composite scores correlated with anterior cingulate NFT counts (r = 0.518, p = 0.01, and r = 0.438, p = 0.032). This analysis suggests that chronic apathy in AD correlate

OBJECTIVE: The authors used magnetic resonance imaging and an image analysis technique known as cortical pattern matching to map cortical gray matter deficits in elderly depressed patients with an illness onset after age 60 (late-onset depression).
METHOD: Seventeen patients with late-onset depression (11 women and six men; mean age=75.24, SD=8.52) and 17 group-matched comparison subjects (11 women and six men; mean age=73.88, SD=7.61) were included. Detailed spatial analyses of gray matter were conducted across the entire cortex by measuring local proportions of gray matter at thousands of h

Using PET, the cerebral network engaged by heard language processing in normal hearing subjects was compared with that in patients who received a cochlear implant after a period of profound deafness. The experimental conditions were words, syllables and environmental sounds, each controlled by a noise baseline. Four categories of effect were observed: (i) regions that were recruited by patients and controls under identical task conditions: the left and right superior temporal cortices and the left insula were activated in both groups in all conditions; (ii) new regions, which were recruited by

Visual perception of houses, faces, and chairs evoke differential responses in ventral temporal cortex. Using fMRI, we compared activations evoked by perception and imagery of these object categories. We found content-related activation during imagery in extrastriate cortex, but this activity was restricted to small subsets of the regions that showed category-related activation during perception. Within ventral temporal cortex, activation during imagery evoked stronger responses on the left whereas perception evoked stronger responses on the right. Additionally, visual imagery evoked activity

We describe a computerized method to automatically find and label the cortical surface in three-dimensional (3-D) magnetic resonance (MR) brain images. The approach we take is to model a prelabeled brain atlas as a physical object and give it elastic properties, allowing it to warp itself onto regions in a preprocessed image. Preprocessing consists of boundary-finding and a morphological procedure which automatically extracts the brain and sulci from an MR image and provides a smoothed representation of the brain surface to which the deformable model can rapidly converge. Our deformable models

In conclusion, cognitive impairment in a cerebellar infarction resembles frontal lobe dysfunction but is generally mild. It can be accurately assessed using the ACE-III and CCAS-s scales.
