The alcoholic hyalin which is composed of light and dark occasionally swollen and conglomerating filaments, is found to be surrounded by proliferated RER, hypertrophied Golgi apparatus and mitochondria containing enlarged matrical granules. Besides, microfilaments and some microtubules are seen in relation to the hyaline bodies. In biopsies where hyaline bodies are scarce, hepatocytes without alcoholic hyalin present similar changes and the Golgi apparatus is seen to contain very low density lipoprotein-like particles. In 1973, epidemiologic and serologic data related to hepatitis B infection were collected from the residents of two remote Alaskan Eskimo villages located in an area of high hepatitis incidence. A total of 418 sera were tested by solid-phase radioimmunoassay for heaptitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and antibody to that antigen (anti-HBs). Over a four-year period in a five-county area, 71 patients with clinical hepatitis B had dental work performed in the two to six months before their illness. Fifty-five cases were traced to a single oral surgeon. In this descriptive epidemiologic study, prevalence rates of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and its antibody (anti-HBs) among fourth-year dental students and second-year dental hygiene students were found to be comparable to those of a control population and a local age-adjusted blood donor group. A routine search for Australia antigen in 29,936 blood donors at the Orleans Hospital Blood Transfusion centre led to the discovery of 105 apparently healthy carriers. Liver function tests were carried out in 80 of the latter and revealed abnormalities in 34 of them. Out of 18 patients who had no other explanation such as alcohol or drugs and who had abnormal tests six months later, 11 accepted liver biopsy. Histology revealed 4 cases of post-hepatic cirrhosis, 2 cases of chronic aggressive hepatitis, 2 cases of chronic persistent hepatitis and 3 livers with non-specific changes.

The repeated occurrence within one family or giant cell hepatitis terminating in death is reported. The familial form of giant cell hepatitis has a poorer prognosis than that occuring sporadically. In the first case, reported earlier, primary liver cancer developed within a short time. In the second case, reported here, the progression of the course of the disease which terminated in cirrhosis was followed in a series of histological examinatons made at five different points of time. Electronmicroscopic examination were also conducted.

The new classification and nomenclature of viral hepatitis and serological markers of hepatitis viruses are presented. Modes of infection, clinical aspects and sequelae of viral hepatitis are outlined. The clinical significance of Australia antigen (HBsAg) is explained, stressing its prognostic value. The problem of asymptomatic HBsAg carriers is discussed and practical guidelines for the prevention of viral hepatitis outlined. The treatment of fulminant hepatitis is unsatisfactory and development of an artificial liver support system is badly needed. Future modes of immunization are listed.

A study of coagulation disorders due to hepatitis A infection occurring during pregnancy was undertaken to determine if the unique coagulation status produced by pregnancy (elevated clotting factors and decreased fibrinolytic activity) was responsible for the increased severity of hepatitis A infections reported for pregnant women from various parts of the world. Sera from 116 consecutive unselected cases of sporadic acute viral hepatitis in children were examined for hepatitis B antigen (HBAg), smooth-muscle autoantibodies (SMA), other autoantibodies and immunoglobulins, and skin tests were performed with dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB).
