The ability of schizophrenics to perceive and cope with negative affect.

Thirty-four schizophrenic patients in an acute in-patient hospital were compared with 24 in-patients with major affective disorder and 19 non-patient controls on a role-play test of social skills and a test of affect perception. The role-play test consisted of 12 simulated conversations in which the subject was confronted by parents and friends expressing high-EE criticism or non-critical dissatisfaction. Schizophrenic patients lacked assertiveness and social skills in all conditions, but they did not show any differential impairment when presented with high EE. They consistently lied and deni

Social interactions and peer perceptions of young physically abused children.

14 3-6-year-old children with a history of physical abuse and a closely matched comparison group of 14 nonabused children, all of whom had been in day-care for more than a year, participated in this investigation. Behavior observations, teacher reports, and peer sociometric ratings were used to evaluate children's peer interactions. It was found that abused children initiated fewer positive interactions with peers and exhibited a higher proportion of negative behavior than nonabused comparison children. Peers viewed abused children as less well liked. Further, peers were less likely to recipro

Situational determinants of cardiovascular and emotional reactivity in high and low hostile men.

Various epidemiologic studies have found that high scores on the Cook and Medley Hostility (Ho) scale are associated with increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), severity of atherosclerosis, and all-cause mortality. One plausible biological mechanism suspected of contributing to increased risk of CHD is sympathetic nervous system-mediated hyperresponsivity to environmental stressors. The present study evaluated cardiovascular reactivity among young men with high versus low Ho scores during performance of an anagram task with or without harassment. Compared to performing the task alone,

A retrospective evaluation of psychosocial impact of long-term growth hormone therapy.

Fifty-eight growth hormone (hGH) deficient adults who had received long-term hGH therapy and their families were contacted to assess their past and current status regarding peer relationships, educational and vocational achievements, and self-concepts. Both heterosexual and same-sex peer relationships were reported as troublesome; most reported problems with having been treated as younger than their chronologic ages. The majority reported average or above average academic performance; there were no significant differences between academic achievements of the expatients and their siblings; the

Follow-up investigation in patients with anorexia nervosa.

Sixty-three female patients with anorexia nervosa were assessed for outcome, on average 27.5 months after treatment. The treatment program, in a general adolescent medical service, is multidisciplinary, stressing appropriate weight gain in conjunction with various therapeutic modalities. Half the group required at least one hospitalization; the remainder received treatment as outpatients. Mean weight of the patients was 41.8 kg at first contact, 46.2 kg at conclusion of treatment, and 52.2 kg at follow-up. Average height at the time of follow-up was in the 38th percentile. Average weight was i

Social skills training for chronic mental patients.

Social skills training has proved to be effective in increasing the social competence of chronic mental patients. The authors describe three models of social skills training, all of which involve role playing by the patient and modeling, prompting, feedback, and reinforcement by the therapist. Many patients can benefit from the basic training model. For patients functioning at a higher level, the problem-solving model provides general strategies for dealing with a variety of social situations. The attention-focusing model, designed for highly distractible and withdrawn patients, teaches skills

The relationship of disability and school type to everyday life.

The relationships between disability and school type, and aspects of the everyday lives of 11-year-old children in the GLC Spina Bifida Survey, were explored. The more disabled children were found to be less likely to go out on their own or with friends, although not less likely to go out with sibs or adults. They were equally likely to have friends visiting them at home, but less likely to have friends living in the locality, and to go out to visit them. Special school children were more often described as lonely, and of children with visible disabilities those in special schools were more of

The Peter Pan and Wendy syndrome: a marital dynamic.

A marital system is described which features an unfaithful and narcissistic husband, Peter Pan, and a long suffering and depressed wife, Wendy. The dynamics of their individual adjustments are examined as well as the symbiotic nature of the dyadic relationship. Other characters take their parts--Tinker Bell, Tiger Lily, and Little Lost Boys. Peter's infidelities belie a firm attachment to his Wendy/mother whilst she depends upon him for protection from forbidden impulses.

Social networks and schizophrenia.

This article suggests that social network concepts and methods can provide a unifying framework for social research on schizophrenia. A selective review of the literature indicates that a social network perspective is not only consistent with a range of other research approaches and findings, but may help resolve some basic and persistent methodological and conceptual problems. A theoretical model is briefly described which attributes a critical role in the onset and recurrence of schizophrenia to social network processes. Some examples are given of the potential contribution of social network

An assessment of hostility in a population of adolescents.

In the course of an epidemiological survey of adolescents, the Hostility and Direction of Hostility Questionnaire was administered to 6,709 persons aged 13 to 18 years, representing 89% of secondary school students in Hobart, Tasmania. Extrapunitiveness was found to decrease substantially between the ages of 15 and 17 years in both sexes. Intropunitiveness also decreased, although to a lesser extent. Girls were less extrapunitive and more intropunitive than boys over the whole age range. These findings are discussed in relation to their clinical relevance and to the understanding of psychiatri

The psychodynamics of male prostitution.

In a seventeen-month field study thirty-three male were interviewed and tentatively classified into four categories: call-boys, street prostitutes, bar hustlers, and kept boys. These classifications, though flexible, were deemed useful in exploring the homosexual psychodynamics involved. In addition, twenty frequenter of prostitutes (scores) were interviewed and the prostitute-customer relationship was analyzed and discussed.

Psychological aspects of vasectomy.

In a study to assess the psychosocial and sexual effects of contraceptive vasectomy by questionnaire and personal interview, 10 out of 82 respondents indicated some psychological problem arising from the operation. Five out of seven couples interviewed had histories of marital, sexual, or psychological instability. Screening of applicants for vasectomy is therefore recommended, pre-existing instability being a contraindication to the operation.

The relationship between social inequalities, substance use and violence in border and non-border cities of northern Mexico.

UNLABELLED: We know little about determinants of violence and drug use in Mexican northern cities, places considered to be at high risk for alcohol, drug use, and violence, including crimes and homicides. METHODS: Data are from the US-Mexico Study on Alcohol and Related Conditions (2011-2013), a survey of respondents living in the border metropolitan areas of Nuevo Laredo (n = 828) and Reynosa and Matamoros (n = 821) and in the non-border metropolitan area of Monterrey (n = 811). Associations between violence (interpersonal, direct community [such as physical attack] and indirect community vi

Navigating emotions, communication, and pain during prehospital labour: a mixed-methods survey with emergency ambulance services.

INTRODUCTION: Despite their crucial role in prehospital obstetric emergencies, there is little research exploring emergency medical service (EMS) personnel's perspectives and attitudes on out-of-hospital births, including balancing the numerous needs of the patient. Our aims were to (1) identify how EMS demographics and professional experience related to their confidence and comfort in treating a patient in labour and (2) explore EMS' perspectives on managing emotional needs and administering analgesia in a labour and birth setting in New Zealand (NZ). METHODS: This mixed-methods survey invit

[Affective dependency and psychiatry: a discord].

INTRODUCTION: The term "loving dependence" is increasingly used by professionals of the relation of help and the patients themselves. It joins in the wider spectre of the interpersonal dependency. More and more patients suffering from this disorder are coming for psychiatric consultation. However, this notion remains vague and absent in the vocabulary of the psychiatrists. Globally, this term describes the functioning of certain patients who present a fear of not being loved and a dependency on another person. The fear of not being loved provokes a fear of abandonment or incites development of

Family-Centred Care Interventions in Adult Intensive Care Units: A Scoping Review of Experiences, Barriers and Facilitators.

BACKGROUND: Family-centred care (FCC) is recognized as a holistic approach to improve patient outcomes, reduce psychological symptoms in family caregivers, and enhance communication between families and healthcare professionals. However, existing research has primarily focused on clinical outcomes or isolated FCC components, with limited attention given to the experiences of those involved in its implementation. AIMS: This study aimed to synthesize the experiences of family caregivers and healthcare professionals with FCC interventions and to identify the barriers and facilitators to the impl
