BACKGROUND: Babies born with extreme prematurity and low birth weight (< 1000 g) present a unique treatment challenge. In addition to the complexity of achieving survival, they may require surgical interventions for abdominal emergencies. Usually, these infants are transferred to a referral center for surgical treatment. Since 2000 our approach is bedside abdominal surgery at the referring center.

Senior physicians explained the need for a caesarean section, but she chose to deliver vaginally since rabbinical blessing could not be obtained. Forcing the mother to have a cesarean section without consent is considered "civil battery." Glaucoma, the third leading cause of blindness in the western world, is characterized by painless, gradual loss of visual fields which may lead to severe visual impairment or even blindness. In 4 years of operation of a mobile glaucoma unit for screening and early diagnosis of glaucoma, 10,037 subjects aged 18-95 years were screened (4504 women, 45%); 55% were under 50 years (Graph 1). Road accidents, work accidents, or other trauma can cause impotence and are frequently followed by insurance claims. During 1990-97 we examined 230 males with such a complaint. All underwent full polysomnographic recordings in the sleep laboratory for 2 nights, during the course of which NPT (nocturnal penile tumescence) was examined with special equipment.
