BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder that leads to abnormally high levels of hemoglobin sickling in erythrocytes. Patients suffer debilitating and severe complications that affect multiple organs, though mainly the liver, gallbladder, spleen, bones, and kidneys.
