Using deep transfer learning to detect scoliosis and spondylolisthesis from x-ray images.

Recent years have witnessed wider prevalence of vertebral column pathologies due to lifestyle changes, sedentary behaviors, or injuries. Spondylolisthesis and scoliosis are two of the most common ailments with an incidence of 5% and 3% in the United States population, respectively. Both of these abnormalities can affect children at a young age and, if left untreated, can progress into severe pain. Moreover, severe scoliosis can even lead to lung and heart problems. Thus, early diagnosis can make it easier to apply remedies/interventions and prevent further disease progression. Current diagnosi

The temporal nature of social context: Insights from the daily lives of patients with HIV.

BACKGROUND: Patients' life contexts are increasingly recognized as important, as evidenced by growing attention to the Social Determinants of Health (SDoH). This attention may be particularly valuable for patients with complex needs, like those with HIV, who are more likely to experience age-related comorbidities, mental health or substance use issues. Understanding patient perceptions of their life context can advance SDoH approaches. OBJECTIVES: We sought to understand how aging patients with HIV think about their life context and explored if and how their reported context was documented in

Tracking-Based Interactive Assessment of Saccades, Pursuits, Visual Field, and Contrast Sensitivity in Children With Brain Injury.

Visual deficits in children that result from brain injury, including cerebral/cortical visual impairment (CVI), are difficult to assess through conventional methods due to their frequent co-occurrence with cognitive and communicative disabilities. Such impairments hence often go undiagnosed or are only determined through subjective evaluations of gaze-based reactions to different forms, colors, and movements, which limits any potential for remediation. Here, we describe a novel approach to grading visual health based on eye movements and evidence from gaze-based tracking behaviors. Our approac

The electrocardiographic forward problem: A benchmark study.

BACKGROUND: Electrocardiographic forward problems are crucial components for noninvasive electrocardiographic imaging (ECGI) that compute torso potentials from cardiac source measurements. Forward problems have few sources of error as they are physically well posed and supported by mature numerical and computational techniques. However, the residual errors reported from experimental validation studies between forward computed and measured torso signals remain surprisingly high. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that incomplete cardiac source sampling, especially above the atrioventricular (AV

Antimicrobial & antiparasitic use and resistance in British sheep and cattle: a systematic review.

A variety of antimicrobials and antiparasitics are used to treat British cattle and sheep to ensure animal welfare, a safe food supply, and maintain farm incomes. However, with increasing global concern about antimicrobial resistance in human and animal populations, there is increased scrutiny of the use of antimicrobials in food-producing animals. This systematic review sought to identify and describe peer and non-peer reviewed sources, published over the last ten years, detailing the usage of, and resistance to, antimicrobials and antiparasitics in sheep and cattle farming systems in Britain

Dosimetric feasibility of hypofractionation for SBRT treatment of lymph node oligometastases on the 1.5T MR-linac.

PURPOSE: At our department, MR-guided stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) using the 1.5T MR-linac system (Unity, Elekta AB, Stockholm, Sweden) has been initiated for patients with lymph node oligometastases. Superior soft tissue contrast and the possibility for online plan adaptation on the Unity may allow for hypofractionated treatment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the dosimetric feasibility and compare the plan quality of different hypofractionated schemes. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Data was used from 12 patients with single lymph node oligometastases (10 pelvic, 2 para-

Quality of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Mobile Apps: Evaluation Using the Mobile App Rating Scale (MARS) With Additional Criteria From a Content Expert.

BACKGROUND: The spread of technology and dissemination of knowledge across the World Wide Web has prompted the development of apps for American Sign Language (ASL) translation, interpretation, and syntax recognition. There is limited literature regarding the quality, effectiveness, and appropriateness of mobile health (mHealth) apps for the deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHOH) that pose to aid the DHOH in their everyday communication and activities. Other than the star-rating system with minimal comments regarding quality, the evaluation metrics used to rate mobile apps are commonly subjective. OB

Valsalva Maneuver in Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: Susceptibility to Syncope and Autonomic Dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) are routinely instructed to avoid performing the Valsalva maneuver for fear of syncope or sudden cardiac death. The mechanism of this action has not been elucidated. We conducted a case-control trial of nine patients with PAH and 15 healthy control subjects to determine if systemic hemodynamic changes during the Valsalva maneuver in these patients invoke greater susceptibility to syncope than healthy control subjects. Metrics commonly employed in autonomic testing were used to assess the degree of autonomic failure. METHODS: Comm

Quantitative micro-CT based coronary artery profiling using interactive local thresholding and cylindrical coordinates.

BACKGROUND: Micro-CT is an established imaging technique for high-resolution non-destructive assessment of vascular samples, which is gaining growing interest for investigations of atherosclerotic arteries both in humans and in animal models. However, there is still a lack in the definition of micro-CT image metrics suitable for comprehensive evaluation and quantification of features of interest in the field of experimental atherosclerosis (ATS). OBJECTIVE: A novel approach to micro-CT image processing for profiling of coronary ATS is described, providing comprehensive visualization and quant

Improved digital breast tomosynthesis images using automated ultrasound.

PURPOSE: Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) offers poor image quality along the depth direction. This paper presents a new method that improves the image quality of DBT considerably through the a priori information from automated ultrasound (AUS) images. METHODS: DBT and AUS images of a complex breast-mimicking phantom are acquired by a DBT/AUS dual-modality system. The AUS images are taken in the same geometry as the DBT images and the gradient information of the in-slice AUS images is adopted into the new loss functional during the DBT reconstruction process. The additional data allow for n

Utilization of a novel digital measurement tool for quantitative assessment of upper extremity motor dexterity: a controlled pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The current methods of assessing motor function rely primarily on the clinician's judgment of the patient's physical examination and the patient's self-administered surveys. Recently, computerized handgrip tools have been designed as an objective method to quantify upper-extremity motor function. This pilot study explores the use of the MediSens handgrip as a potential clinical tool for objectively assessing the motor function of the hand. METHODS: Eleven patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) were followed for three months. Eighteen age-matched healthy participants w

Conformation- and Compound-Dependence of Ribose/2'-Deoxyribose Retention Patterns in Pyrimidine-Nucleoside Phosphorylase from Bacillus subtilis: A Four-Structure Molecular Dynamics Study.

In pyrimidine-nucleoside phosphorylase (PyNP), how the conformational state shapes substrate recognition remains poorly understood. In this study, all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) with MM-PB-(GB)-SA decomposition was performed on four structures of PyNP from Bacillus subtilis spanning the conformational range: the open 5OLN, the semi-open 5EP8orig, an energy-minimized contracted (closed-like) model 5EP8 min, and the cross-species closed-state crystal 1BRW, the last added to define the closed-state end. Thirteen structural probes were used (ten purine-like ribose/2'-deoxyribose analogues and th

Neurovascular coupling in simultaneous EEG-fNIRS studies: A scoping review of analytical frameworks and clinical applications.

Simultaneous electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) have been used across cognitive and physiological states and in diverse clinical populations. However, the interpretation of cross-modal coupling remains difficult because findings from different analytical frameworks, populations, and experimental conditions have not been systematically mapped. This scoping review followed the Arksey and O'Malley framework and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Variation in public health reimbursement policies of ECT and rTMS across 28 European countries: A call for evidence-based policy reform from the ECNP Neuromodulation Network.

Mental disorders contribute significantly to the disease burden in Europe. Brain stimulation treatments such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) are supported by strong evidence and are recommended in clinical guidelines in many countries. However, access to these interventions remains highly inconsistent across Europe. Reimbursement by public health services plays a critical role in enabling equitable access to these therapies. In this study, we examined disparities in national reimbursement policies for ECT and rTMS for the treatment of
