A markerless beam's eye view motion monitoring algorithm based on structure conversion and demons registration in medical image with partial data.

PURPOSE: To propose a markerless beam's eye view (BEV) motion monitoring algorithm, which works with the inferior quality megavolt (MV) images with multi-leaf collimator (MLC) occlusion-compatible. METHODS: A thorax phantom was used to verify the accuracy of the algorithm. Lung tumor quality assurance (QA) plans were generated for the phantom, and delivered 10 times on the linear accelerator with manually treatment offsets in various directions. The algorithm was used to register 753 electronic portal imaging device (EPID) images with the appropriate digitally reconstructed radiograph (DRR), …

Brown Slime Cap Mushroom (Chroogomphus rutilus, Agaricomycetes) Polysaccharide Resists Motion Sickness by Inhibiting the Activity of the Serotonin System in Mice.

Motion sickness (MS) is a disorder of the autonomic nervous system caused by abnormal exercise with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and drowsiness. More than 90% of the human population has experienced different degrees of MS. At present, anticholinergics, antihistamines, and sympathomimetic drugs are used for treating MS, but these drugs generally have some adverse reactions and are not suitable for all people. Therefore, it is necessary to develop anti-MS drugs that have high efficiency and no adverse effects. Previous studies have found that Chroogomphus rutilus polysaccharide (CRP) is ef…

Towards automated video-based assessment of dystonia in dyskinetic cerebral palsy: A novel approach using markerless motion tracking and machine learning.

Introduction: Video-based clinical rating plays an important role in assessing dystonia and monitoring the effect of treatment in dyskinetic cerebral palsy (CP). However, evaluation by clinicians is time-consuming, and the quality of rating is dependent on experience. The aim of the current study is to provide a proof-of-concept for a machine learning approach to automatically assess scoring of dystonia using 2D stick figures extracted from videos. Model performance was compared to human performance. Methods: A total of 187 video sequences of 34 individuals with dyskinetic CP (8-23 years, all

Early initiation of electrical stimulation paired with range of motion after a volumetric muscle loss injury does not benefit muscle function.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? First, how does physical rehabilitation influence recovery from traumatic muscle injury? Second, how does physical activity impact the rehabilitation response for skeletal muscle function and whole-body metabolism? What is the main finding and its importance? The most salient findings were that rehabilitation impaired muscle function and range of motion, while restricting activity mitigated some negative effects but also impacted whole-body metabolism. These data suggest that first, work must continue to explore treatment parameters, in…

Detecting abnormal placental microvascular flow in maternal and fetal diseases based on flow-compensated and non-compensated intravoxel incoherent motion imaging.

INTRODUCTION: Intravoxel Incoherent Motion (IVIM) imaging has been used to assess placental microcirculatory flows. We proposed a joint analysis of flow-compensated (FC) and non-compensated (NC) diffusion MRI to estimate the fraction and velocity of ballistic microcirculatory flow (fb and vb), and evaluated the diagnostic performance of the new markers in maternal and fetal disorders. METHODS: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM, n = 15) pregnancies and fetal growth restriction (FGR, n = 12), along with gestational age matched normal controls (n = 19 for GDM and 15 for FGR) underwent FC and NC…

Abnormal Diastolic Hemodynamic Forces: A Link Between Right Ventricular Wall Motion, Intracardiac Flow, and Pulmonary Regurgitation in Repaired Tetralogy of Fallot.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The effect of chronic pulmonary regurgitation (PR) on right ventricular (RV) dysfunction in repaired Tetralogy of Fallot (RTOF) patients is well recognized by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). However, the link between RV wall motion, intracardiac flow and PR has not been established. Hemodynamic force (HDF) represents the global force exchanged between intracardiac blood volume and endocardium, measurable by 4D flow or by a novel mathematical model of wall motion. In our study, we used this novel methodology to derive HDF in a cohort of RTOF patients, exclusively usi…

Analysis of the amplitude changes and baseline shifts of respiratory motion using intra-fractional CBCT in liver stereotactic body radiation therapy.

PURPOSE: Using intra-fractional cone-beam CT (CBCT) to evaluate the amplitude changes and baseline shifts of respiratory motion in liver stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). METHODS: The amplitude changes and baseline shifts of respiratory motion for 24 liver patients were evaluated by the four-dimensional (4D) CT, inter- and intra-fractional CBCT. The difference of the average liver position errors among all treatment fractions and the 4D CT representthe baseline shifts. According to the baseline shifts, the ITV to PTV margin was recalculated and the plan was re-designed to compare th…

Prior transfusion of umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells can effectively alleviate symptoms of motion sickness in mice through interleukin 10 secretion.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness (MS) is a disease that occurs during unbalanced movement, characterized by gastrointestinal symptoms and autonomic nervous system activation. Current clinical treatments for MS are limited. Recent evidence indicates that the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines increase during MS and are associated with an inner ear immune imbalance. In the present study, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been shown to exert strong immuno-suppressive effects. AIM: To explore whether umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) can prevent the occurrence of MS, and the u…

The Effect of Straight-Line Long-Toss Versus Ultra-Long-Toss Throwing on Passive Glenohumeral Range of Motion Recovery After Pitching.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive throwing in baseball pitchers can lead to pathologic changes in shoulder anatomy, range of motion (notably glenohumeral internal rotation deficit), and subsequent injury; however, the ideal strengthening, recovery, and maintenance protocol of the throwing shoulder in baseball remains unclear. Two strategies for throwing shoulder recovery from pitching are straight-line long-toss (SLT) throwing and ultra-long-toss (ULT) throwing, although neither is preferentially supported by empirical data. HYPOTHESIS: ULT will be more effective in returning baseline internal rotation …

Shift in lateralization during illusory self-motion: EEG responses to visual flicker at 10 Hz and frequency-specific modulation by tACS.

Self-motion perception is a key aspect of higher vestibular processing, suggested to rely upon hemispheric lateralization and alpha-band oscillations. The first aim of this study was to test for any lateralization in the EEG alpha band during the illusory sense of self-movement (vection) induced by large optic flow stimuli. Visual stimuli flickered at alpha frequency (approx. 10 Hz) in order to produce steady state visually evoked potentials (SSVEPs), a robust EEG measure which allows probing the frequency-specific response of the cortex. The first main result was that differential lateralizat…

Differential Patterns of Visual Sensory Alteration Underlying Face Emotion Recognition Impairment and Motion Perception Deficits in Schizophrenia and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Impaired face emotion recognition (FER) and abnormal motion processing are core features in schizophrenia (SZ) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that have been linked to atypical activity within the visual cortex. Despite overlaps, only a few studies have directly explored convergent versus divergent neural mechanisms of altered visual processing in ASD and SZ. We employed a multimodal imaging approach to evaluate FER and motion perception in relation to functioning of subcortical and cortical visual regions. METHODS: Subjects were 20 high-functioning adults with ASD, 19 patients…

Lanczos-based equation-of-motion coupled-cluster singles-and-doubles approach to the total photoionization cross section of valence excited states.

Excitation energies and oscillator strengths of the first two electronically excited states of helium, water, sulfur dioxide, molecular nitrogen, and carbon monoxide were obtained from an asymmetric-Lanczos-based formulation of the equation-of-motion coupled cluster singles and doubles approach. The total photoionization cross sections were generated by two different methodologies: an analytic continuation procedure based on the Padé approximants and the Stieltjes imaging technique. The results are compared with theoretical photoionization cross sections from algebraic diagrammatic constructio…
