Changes in practice morbidity between the 1970 and 1981 national morbidity surveys.

The primary aim of the study was to evaluate practice differences in reported morbidity in the second and third national morbidity surveys (1970/71, 1981/82) and to discuss their cause. A secondary aim concerned the validation of trends identified from analysis of the data from the total populations in the practices. Altogether 19 practices participated in both surveys. Annual prevalences (that is, the number of patients attending the general practitioner with a condition per 1000 persons at risk) were examined for: all conditions; each of three categories of seriousness of disease; diseases a

Microscopic polyangiitis: clinical aspects and treatment.

Recently individualized from polyarteritis nodosa (PAN), microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) is defined as a systemic necrotizing vasculitis that clinically and histologically affects small-sized vessels (ie, capillaries, venules or arterioles) without granulomata and is associated with focal segmental necrotizing glomerulonephritis. Males are more frequently affected than females and the average age of onset is about 50 years old. Most patients experience some systemic symptoms before diagnosis of vasculitis. Clinically, renal involvement is the major feature of MPA and is characterized by rapidly

Primate Swallowing Is Powered by Both Rotation and Contraction of Suprahyoid Muscles.

OBJECTIVES: Swallowing biomechanics in primates and other mammals is poorly understood, and the effect of hyoid descent on swallowing biomechanics lacks experimental interrogation. In macaques, which share similar swallowing kinematics with humans, the base of the tongue and the food bolus are hypothesized to be driven into the oropharynx by a hydraulic mechanism, at the core of which is elevation and protraction of the hyoid. Here, the musculoskeletal mechanisms driving these hyoid movements are experimentally evaluated in macaque primates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We integrate XROMM-based mea

SIRT Family: Biological Functions and Therapeutic Targets.

Sirtuins (SIRT1-SIRT7) are nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) dependent deacylases that serves as metabolic sensors, coupling cellular energy status to chromatin structure, mitochondrial function, and stress responses. Dysregulated SIRT activity has been extensively studied in aging, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, neurodegeneration, cancer, and immune disorders. However, robust human evidence and SIRT-targeted therapies are lacking. Transgenic mouse models serve as key platforms to study gene function and guide therapeutic development. This review synthesizes evidence from S

A Joint-Level Hybrid Framework for Gait Analysis Using Camera-IMU Fusion and LSTM-Based Temporal Correction.

Gait analysis is an essential tool in clinical domains for diagnosing musculoskeletal disorders and evaluating rehabilitation, yet traditional marker-based systems are limited by high costs and spatial constraints. To overcome these challenges, this study proposes and evaluates a joint-level hybrid framework that integrates a single RGB camera with two shoe-mounted inertial measurement units (IMUs) to leverage their complementary strengths. The camera-based module estimates hip and knee sagittal joint angles using 3D pose estimation, where the DEAS optimization algorithm aligns estimated coord

A review of the synergistic mechanisms of Yijinjing, meridian sinew therapy, dry needling, and Fascial Manipulation in chronic cervical myofascial pain based on the fascia-meridian sinew continuum.

Chronic cervical myofascial pain is a common and disabling musculoskeletal pain condition, yet its persistence is unlikely to be explained by a single local lesion. Current evidence points to a multilevel process involving hypersensitive nodal sites, impaired fascial gliding, imbalance across continuous tension chains, sensorimotor disturbance, and mechanisms that maintain pain chronicity. Alongside advances in fascial science and mechanobiology, traditional meridian sinew theory offers a clinically useful language for pathway-based pain, tension-chain imbalance, remote-local interaction, and

A computer vision-based modeling pipeline to facilitate efficient video-to-strain analysis of human tibia during dynamic gait.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Tibial stress and strain are crucial indicators of bone health and injury risk, yet their estimation with conventional marker-based motion capture systems is time-consuming and constrained to multi-camera laboratory setups, limiting broader applicability. METHODS: We propose a novel video-to-strain analysis (V2S) method, enabling subject-specific musculoskeletal modeling and tibial stress/strain computation from single-view smartphone recordings of treadmill walking. Markerless motion was reconstructed using SMPL-based fitting with HuMoR, a deep generative human moti

Chrono-mechanobiology: The complex interactions between mechanotransduction and circadian rhythms in the intervertebral disc and articular cartilage, in health and disease.

The intervertebral disc (IVD) and the articular cartilage (AC) are specialized, load-bearing tissues critical for spinal flexibility and joint mobility, respectively. Both tissues are characterized by their avascular nature and abundant extracellular matrix (ECM). They heavily rely on precisely regulated anabolic and catabolic processes to maintain structural integrity and functional performance. Disturbances can contribute to IVD degeneration and osteoarthritis that represent leading global causes of disability and pose substantial challenges to healthcare systems worldwide. One of the key re

Tissue regeneration strategies based on mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles: from bench to bedside.

Regenerative medicine is undergoing a paradigm shift from live-cell therapies to cell-free strategies. Within this evolving field, mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (MSC-EVs) have emerged as a leading platform. These nanoscale vesicles deliver bioactive cargo that mediates critical therapeutic functions, including immunomodulation, angiogenesis, and anti-fibrosis. Furthermore, they offer improved safety, greater potential for standardization, and enhanced scalability compared to traditional live-cell therapies. However, clinical translation remains constrained by several cha

Transplantation of Ru265-treated mitochondria enhances the therapeutic impact on skeletal muscle ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Mitochondrial transplantation (MT) is a promising therapeutic approach for the treatment of several pathologies, including ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). However, its efficacy remains limited by the high calcium concentration of the transplantation milieu. Elevated extracellular calcium induces MCU-mediated matrix calcium overload, leading to the opening of the permeability transition pore and metabolic collapse of the transplanted organelles. We hypothesized that shielding mitochondria from the adverse effects of high calcium using the reversible MCU inhibitor, Ru265, would increase the e
