Talaromyces marneffei (TM) causes a deeply invasive fatal fungal disease in immunocompromised individuals that is widespread in Southeast Asia and southern China, and little is known about how this fungus can evade the human immune system. An imbalance between M1 and M2 macrophages plays a critical role in fungal clearance. However, whether regulatory T (Treg) cells mediate the immune evasion of TM by influencing the polarization direction of macrophages remains unexplored. In this study, we found that, compared with those in healthy volunteers, the number of circulating Treg cells in the peri

BACKGROUND: Fungal infections significantly compromise the prognosis of patients with interstitial pneumonia with autoimmune features (IPAF). However, the specific immune-related risk factors and their impact on clinical stability remain poorly defined. This study aimed to identify independent predictors for fungal infection and early readmission to optimize risk stratification.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 98 patients meeting the 2015 European Respiratory Society/American Thoracic Society (ERS/ATS) IPAF classification criteria. Fungal infections were confirmed through cl

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 predisposes patients to secondary infection, resulting in increased mortality worldwide. It is thus crucial to identify the causes of secondary infection and their clinical outcomes to devise future prevention and control strategies. This study aimed to report the clinical and microbiological features of bacterial and fungal secondary infections in severe COVID-19 patients during the peak of the pandemic in Vietnam. METHODS: We collected data from 3,789 confirmed COVID-19 patients hospitalized at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City between 2020 and 2021.

BACKGROUND: The risk of fungal infection in patients with psoriasis receiving biologics is not fully understood in clinical practice.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the incidence and the risk of fungal infection onset in patients with psoriasis receiving biologics.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of 592 psoriasis cases treated with biologics at a single center.
RESULTS: Seventy-three (12.3%) of the 592 cases involved a fungal infection. Fungal infection occurrence was more frequently associated with the use of interleukin (IL) 17 inhibitors than of other biologics. The risk factors of fungal in

Our observational study analysed fungal infection frequency within cohorts with versus without antifungal prophylaxis (AFP) among newly diagnosed first-line venetoclax and azacitidine (VEN + AZA)-treated acute myeloid leukaemias in Czech, Austrian and Slovak haematology centres. Among 186 patients, 85 (46%) received antifungal prophylaxis, while 101 (54%) received no prophylaxis. Fungal infections occurred in 1/85 patients with prophylaxis (1%) and 5/101 patients without prophylaxis (5%) (p = 0.222). No significant difference was recorded between cohorts with and without AFP in terms of death

Lomentospora prolificans is a rare filamentous fungus that causes invasive fungal disease (IFD) in immunocompromised patients with hematological malignancies, as well as hematopoietic cell or solid organ transplant recipients. A 75-year-old woman was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, and started induction therapy with azacitidine and adjusted-dose venetoclax along with antifungal prophylaxis with fluconazole. On day 7, she became febrile and chest CT imaging showed multiple nodules in both lung fields, and the serum galactomannan antigen index became positive, indicating probable IFD. Ant

Preterm infants or those with low birth weight are highly susceptible to invasive fungal disease (IFD) and other microbial or viral infection due to immaturity of their immune system. Antibiotics are routinely administered in these vulnerable infants in treatment of sepsis and other infectious diseases, which might cause perturbation of gut microbiome and hence development of IFD. In this study, we compared clinical characteristics of fungal infection after antibiotic treatment in preterm infants. As determined by 16S rRNA sequencing, compared with non-IFD patients with or without antibiotics

BACKGROUND: Talaromyces marneffei is a highly pathogenic fungus that can cause life-threatening fatal systemic mycosis. Disseminated Talaromycosis marneffei affects multiple organs, including the lungs, skin, and reticuloendothelial system. However, T. marneffei infection has rarely been reported in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-negative infants with multiple intestinal perforations and diffuse hepatic granulomatous inflammation.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of an HIV-negative 37-month-old boy who has had recurrent pneumonia since infancy and was infected with disseminated Tala

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) ribonucleic acid (RNA) levels generally remain undetectable in the cerebrospinal fluid of people living with HIV with peripheral viral suppression. Secondary HIV central nervous system (CNS) escape refers to the rare independent replication of HIV RNA in the central nervous system despite peripheral viral suppression that occurs in the setting of a concomitant non-HIV infection. We describe here a young man with perinatal HIV infection considered a viral controller who developed secondary HIV CNS escape in the setting of a presumed fungal CNS infection.

PURPOSE: Allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS) forms a subset of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) that is mainly characterized by eosinophilic nasal polyps, allergic mucin detected in the sinuses at surgery, and specific features on computerized tomography. Which biological markers predict disease recurrence in AFRS is still not clear, and the role of blood inflammatory cells in predicting recurrent polyps after surgery has yet to be investigated. The aim of this study was to newly investigate the prognostic role (in terms of recurrence rate) of preoperative blood eosinophil a

BACKGROUND: Infectious abortion in ruminants is a problem in animal husbandry worldwide. It is important to obtain a diagnosis, to make sure that proper control measures can be instituted, but most abortion cases remain without an etiologic diagnosis. This report describes the presence of Arcobacter species and several neglected opportunistic abortifacient agents in ruminant abortion cases showing or not co-infections among at least one of the major recognized protozoal, fungal, bacterial and viral abortifacient agents.
RESULTS: A total of 67 fetuses (55 cattle and 12 goats) and just one plac

We report a case of keratitis caused by a rare fungus Podospora austroamericana. Clinical and microbiological evaluation of the corneal ulcer was done and the treatment outcome was studied. The fungus was grown from the corneal scraping, and it was identified as P. austroamericana based on DNA sequence and analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region. The patient was treated with topical azithromycin, natamycin and voriconazole. Despite maximum medical therapy, the ulcer progressed very rapidly and the patient developed panophthalmitis and evisceration of the eye had to be done. This is

Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) reduce host population sizes, cause extinction, disassemble communities, and have indirect negative effects on human well-being. Fungal EIDs have reduced population abundances in amphibians and bats across many species over large areas. The recent emergence of snake fungal disease (SFD) may have caused declines in some snake populations in the Eastern United States (EUS), which is home to a phylogenetically and ecologically diverse assembly of 98 taxa. SFD has been documented in only 23 naturally occuring species, although this is likely an underestimate of
