Imaging of salivary gland tumours.

Salivary gland neoplasms account for <3% of all tumors. Most of them are benign and parotid gland is the commonest site. As a general rule, the smaller the involved salivary gland, the higher is the possibility of the tumor being malignant. The role of imaging in assessment of salivary gland tumour is to define intra-glandular vs. extra-glandular location, detect malignant features, assess local extension and invasion, detect nodal metastases and systemic involvement. Image guided fine needle aspiration cytology provides a safe means to obtain cytological confirmation. For lesions in the super

Sentinel node localization by lymphoscintigraphy: a reliable technique with widespread applications.

The concept of the sentinel lymph node (SN) represents an important contribution to guide appropriate surgery of cancer. Diagnostic non-invasive or minimally invasive procedures that provide accurate preoperative staging of the lymph node status are badly needed. The technique of SN biopsy, first developed with the purpose to select melanoma patients for regional node dissection, has been extended to other malignancies. Initial studies in breast carcinoma, conducted with vital blue dye, showed that the SN concept was biologically valid, although SN was missed in up to 30%-40% of cases. If a ra

Allelic imbalance in lichen sclerosus, hyperplasia, and intraepithelial neoplasia of the vulva.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have addressed in detail the genetic alterations that occur in vulvar squamous carcinomas (VSCC) and their precursor lesions. In a previous study, we determined the most common chromosomal loci for allelic imbalance (AI) in HPV-positive and -negative VSCCs. The present study was designed to determine whether AI and the microsatellite instability phenotype (MIN) were present in epithelial lesions known to be associated with VSCC. DESIGN: Fifty-seven epithelial loci were analyzed, including HPV-positive (classic) and -negative (differentiated) vulvar intraepithelial neop

Ampullary region carcinomas: definition and site specific classification with delineation of four clinicopathologically and prognostically distinct subsets in an analysis of 249 cases.

Ampullary (AMP) carcinomas comprise a heterogeneous group of cancers lacking adequate subcategorization. In the present study, 249 strictly defined primary AMP carcinomas (ACs) identified in 1469 malignant pancreatoduodenectomy specimens were analyzed for defining features. Gross and microscopic findings were used to determine tumor epicenter and extent of preinvasive component. ACs were classified into 4 distinct subtypes based on location: (1) Intra-AMP (25%): Invasive carcinomas arising in intra-ampullary papillary-tubular neoplasms with zero to minimal, duodenal surface involvement (<25% o

Clinical Course and Risk Factors for Malignant Progression in Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasms with High-Risk Stigmata.

BACKGROUND: Surgical resection is recommended for intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN) with high-risk stigmata (HRS). However, in clinical practice, some patients are managed conservatively because of their advanced age or comorbidities. We aimed to evaluate the clinical course and identify risk factors for malignant progression in patients with HRS-positive IPMN. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 100 consecutive patients with HRS-positive IPMN treated at a single tertiary center between 2015 and 2024. Patients were classified into a surgical group (n = 63) and an o

Clinical characteristics and surgical management of adult gastric inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors: A systematic review and pooled individual patient data analysis.

Adult gastric inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMT) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that often mimic gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). This systematic review with pooled individual patient data aimed to define their clinical presentation, diagnostic work-up, and surgical management. Electronic databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library) were searched for adult (≥18 years) cases of histologically confirmed gastric IMT. Individual patient data on demographics, tumor characteristics, treatment, and outcomes were extracted from eligible case reports and series. Continuous

Upregulation of PREX1 Expression by POU2F2 Promotes the Malignant Progression of Acute Myeloid Leukemia via the mTOR Pathway.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a hematologic neoplasm with heterologous cytology and short-term prognosis. In varying cancers, PREX1 and POU2F2 serve as oncogenes, but whether it influences AML malignant progression is elusive. This project attempted to unravel the influence of PREX1 and POU2F2 on AML malignant progression. Bioinformatics analysis of differential mRNAs in AML was carried out to identify target genes and predict upstream regulatory molecules. Bioinformatics analyzed PREX1 and POU2F2 expressions in AML. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyzed the enriched pathwa

Survival analysis of borderline ovarian tumors: a 23-year retrospective study in a Middle Eastern cohort.

BACKGROUND: Borderline ovarian tumors (BOTs) constitute a category of non-invasive epithelial neoplasms of the ovary, characterized by a substantially more favorable prognosis in comparison to their invasive malignant counterparts. Given their prevalence among young women, balancing oncologic safety with fertility preservation is critical for clinical management. This study evaluates factors associated with survival in patients with BOTs over a long-term follow-up period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study examined data from 135 patients diagnosed with borderline ovarian tu

Frailty and malnutrition scores in predicting postoperative complications in minimally invasive prostatectomy for malignancy of the prostate.

Prostate cancer (PCa), the second most common cancer in men, is typically diagnosed between ages 65 and 74. When planning radical prostatectomy, patient frailty and nutritional status must be carefully evaluated. This study investigates the association between frailty, malnutritional status, and postprostatectomy complications in PCa patients. We analyzed the ACS-NSQIP prostatectomy series (2019-2022), focusing on minimally invasive procedures, including only malignant neoplasm diagnoses. The modified 5-index frailty (mFI-5) was calculated, where values of 2 or higher indicated frailty. Nutrit

Adipocyte derived exosomes promote cell invasion and challenge paclitaxel efficacy in ovarian cancer.

BACKGROUND: Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the deadliest gynaecological cancer with high mortality rates driven by the common development of resistance to chemotherapy. EOC frequently invades the omentum, an adipocyte-rich organ of the peritoneum and omental adipocytes have been implicated in promoting disease progression, metastasis and chemoresistance. The signalling mechanisms underpinning EOC omentum tropism have yet to be elucidated. METHODS: Three-dimensional co-culture models were used to explore adipocyte-EOC interactions. The impact of adipocytes on EOC proliferation, response to

Recurrent CYP2A6 gene mutation in biphasic hyalinizing psammomatous renal cell carcinoma: Additional support of three cases.

Biphasic hyalinizing psammomatous renal cell carcinoma (BHP RCC) with NF2 gene mutations is a newly described provisional category of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Here we described three additional cases of BHP RCC with CYP2A6 gene mutation besides NF2 gene. The carcinomas were predominantly unencapsulated, and two of them had a rounded, nodular interface with the native kidney while one had perirenal adipose tissue invasion. Histopathologically, all neoplasms had a characteristic biphasic appearance of smaller cells clustering around basement membrane material within larger acini, forming pseu
