Enteral nutrition provides favorable postoperative outcomes for patients with pseudomyxoma peritonei: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare malignancy, and many uncertainties regarding its treatment and prognosis still remain. The main treatment for PMP is cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), which can lead to intra-abdominal trauma and systemic reactions. Enteral nutrition (EN) is an important and beneficial perioperative option for major complicated abdominal surgery compared with total parenteral nutrition (TPN). However, the role of EN in PMP after surgery is still unknown. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects o

Modifying Intestinal Integrity and Micro Biome in Severe Malnutrition with Legume-Based Feeds (MIMBLE 2.0): protocol for a phase II refined feed and intervention trial.

Background: Changes in intestinal mucosal integrity and gut microbial balance occur in severe acute malnutrition (SAM), resulting in treatment failure and adverse clinical outcomes (gram-negative sepsis, diarrhoea and high case-fatality). Transient lactose intolerance, due to loss of intestinal brush border lactase, also complicates SAM, thus milk based feeds may not be optimal for nutritional rehabilitation. Since the gut epithelial barrier can be supported by short chain fatty acids, derived from microbiota fermentation by particular fermentable carbohydrates, we postulated that an energy-de

Motivation and challenges in decision making for gastrostomy tube placement and use: a focus on patients with cancer and dysphagia.

BACKGROUND: Gastrostomy tube placement is the preferred modality for long-term nutritional management in individuals with oral feeding disorders. However, acceptance of this intervention is often impeded by reluctance to discontinue oral feeding, concerns about increased caregiver burden, and apprehension regarding life prolongation with diminished quality of life. These factors may generate decisional conflict, negatively affecting patients' physical and psychological well-being and treatment outcomes. In this study, we aimed to explore the facilitators and barriers influencing gastrostomy-re

Artificial Placenta and Partial Ectogenesis for Extremely Preterm Infants: A Narrative Review.

Extremely preterm births at the edge of viability are associated with high mortality and significant long-term morbidity. This is largely due to the sudden and involuntary shift from fetal placental support to neonatal lung breathing, accompanied by systemic organ injury. Between 22 and 24 weeks of gestation, the fetal lungs, brain, and metabolic regulatory systems are not biologically prepared for extrauterine life. As a result, extremely preterm infants are highly vulnerable to ventilator-induced lung injury, oxygen toxicity, hemodynamic instability, and inflammatory cascades that contribute

Clinical relevance of hyperamylasemia and pancreatitis-like imaging linked with accidental hypothermia.

BACKGROUND: Elevated pancreatic enzymes and pancreatitis-like imaging findings have been reported in patients with accidental hypothermia; h … equired invasive pancreatic intervention. Most patients were managed conservatively with fluids and nutritional support, and short-term outcomes were generally favorable. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with accidental hypothermia, serum amylase levels ≥428 IU/L may support consideration of CT evaluation of pancreatitis-like findings. Although hyperamylasemia alone showed …

The 2026 IBD UK Standards of healthcare service design and delivery for adults and children living with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

OBJECTIVE: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, requires consistent high-quality care to reduce variation in patient experience and improve outcomes. The IBD Standards previously published in 2009, 2013 and 2019 have provided an aspirational framework for best practice. Since 2019, two rounds of national benchmarking with patient engagement, healthcare professional (HCP) consultation and new evidence have highlighted areas for quality improvement (QI). We aimed to develop the 2026 IBD UK Standards of healthcare for adults and children, ensuring th

Supporting caregivers of people with dementia: insights from Demensia KITA mobile application online content development.

Dementia significantly impacts caregivers, particularly in low and middle-income countries where support is often inadequate. Given the gap in affordable and culturally relevant digital resources for Malaysian dementia caregivers, we developed "Demensia KITA," a mobile application (app) specifically tailored to their needs. This study utilized a theoretical framework proposed from existing literature and the "Model of Carer Stress and Burden". This paper discusses our app content development, highlighting key findings and challenges. To assess caregivers' needs, the Nominal Group Technique (NG

The association between perceived injunctive norms toward corporal punishment, parenting support, and risk for child physical abuse.

The use of corporal punishment (CP) is a strong risk factor for many poor outcomes for children including child maltreatment. The use of CP occurs within social contexts which are important to understand. Although it is known that perceived social norms regarding CP are related to its use, the specific role that a mother's primary support person plays in influencing attitudes toward and use of CP remains unknown. The current study assessed linkages between maternal perceived social support in parenting and perceived injunctive norms of CP from her primary source of support, with maternal attit

Outcomes after Posterior Cervical Spine Surgery: A Matched Cohort Analysis and Comparison of GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Use and Bariatric Surgery in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Obesity and diabetes can increase perioperative risk, especially in posterior cervical spine surgery. Bariatric surgery provides durable weight loss but carries surgical and nutritional risks, while glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) are non-surgical alternatives that may optimize weight and metabolic status preoperatively. Evidence evaluating GLP-1 therapy in spine surgery is limited. PURPOSE: To evaluate associations between preoperative GLP-1 RA use and perioperative, short-term, and long-term complications following posterior cervical spine surgery i

Mapping the Evidence on Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, and Folate Deficiencies and Their Potential Impact on Treatment Outcomes in Patients With Cancer in Sub-Saharan Africa: Protocol for a Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Micronutrient deficiencies, particularly of vitamin D, vitamin B12, and folate, are increasingly recognized as important, yet underexplored contributors to adverse outcomes in oncology care. These micronutrients are essential for immune regulation, DNA synthesis and repair, cell proliferation, and metabolic homeostasis, all of which are frequently disrupted in patients with cancer. Deficiencies may arise due to cancer-related metabolic changes, malabsorption, anorexia, and treatment-related toxicities, potentially influencing therapeutic response, treatment tolerance, survival, and
