Mitral prolapse is a parachute-like protrusion of the value into the left atrium. Almost always a myxoid degeneration of the valve is the base of such a prolapse. Myxoid degeneration is understood as dissolution of the collagenous fibrous layer and its replacement by acid glucosaminoglycans. Vascular involvement in biopsied muscle specimens from 11 patients with chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO) with ragged-red fibers (RRF) was studied. Differentiation between Marfan's disease, or its forme fruste counterpart and Erdheim's cystic medionecrosis can be made in cases of aortic dilatation or dissection. This study examined the morphological features at light microscopy of aortic tissue, removed at surgery in 10 patients with Marfan's disease. Clinical pathologic observation and immunohistochemical demonstration on beta--HCG are reported in 13 cases of intracranial primary germinomas, including 7 cases of germinomas in the region of the pineal gland and 6 cases in the hypothalamic area. Histopathological changes in the lung resulting from infection with a virulent strain of the malarial parasite, Plasmodium knowlesi, in healthy and protein-deprived Rhesus monkeys were studied. Pertinent changes noted were a high degree of parasitized red cells in septal capillaries, microinfarcts, alveolar and interstitial oedema, interstitial pneumonitis, bronchopneumonia, and injury to septal capillary wall which may be secondary to the production of tumour necrosis factor. These changes were more marked in the non-protein-deprived monkeys.

A rational nutrition is an important constituent of the management of preterm infants with severe cerebral conditions. The paper reviews indications for introducing total or partial parenteral nutrition (PN). Hyperalimentation is an appropriate choice within 10-12 postnatal days which should be later replaced by the "Scandinavian" regimen. The rate and duration of a daily PN regimen should be oriented to the time of glucose infusion. A protocol of partial and total PN is recommended for practical adoption.
