Adult attachment as a predictor of posttraumatic stress and dissociation.

This study examined whether K. Bartholomew's (1990) self-report dimensions of adult attachment (secure, dismissing, preoccupied, and fearful) mediate or moderate links from victimization/abuse to posttraumatic stress and dissociation. Participants were 199 college women with and without a history of childhood physical abuse, childhood sexual victimization, and adolescent/adult sexual victimization. Path analysis revealed no significant mediation effects for attachment; however, hierarchical multiple linear regression indicated that dismissing attachment moderated the link between victimization

Differential relations of depression and social anxiety symptoms to the facets of extraversion/positive emotionality.

Previous research has shown that both depression and social anxiety--2 facets of internalizing psychopathology--are characterized by low levels of extraversion/positive emotionality (E/PE). However, little is known about the relations of the facets of E/PE with the symptoms of depression and social anxiety. This study utilized multiple measures of each facet of E/PE, as well as depression and social anxiety symptoms. Self-report data were collected from large samples of college students and psychiatric outpatients. Separate factor analyses in each sample revealed a 4-factor structure of E/PE c

A pilot study of impulsivity and compulsivity in pathological gambling.

We examined the relationship between gambling severity, impulsivity and obsessionality/compulsivity in 38 pathological gamblers, representing the complete Minnesota sample of a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial of paroxetine for the treatment of pathological gambling (PG), using Pearson correlations and linear regression models at baseline and treatment endpoint. At baseline, Pathological Gambling Modification of the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (PG-YBOCS) scores correlated significantly with those of the Eysenck Impulsiveness Questionnaire (EIQ) Impulsiveness subscale and

A taxometric investigation of agoraphobia in a clinical and a community sample.

The nosological status of agoraphobia is controversial. Agoraphobia may be a distinct diagnostic entity or a marker of avoidance severity. The current study examines the latent structure of agoraphobia through the use of taxometric analysis. The latent structure of agoraphobia was examined in two independent samples, one comprising outpatients presenting for treatment for panic disorder (PD) with or without agoraphobia (n=365), and the other comprising community volunteers to a national mental health survey who experienced fear or avoidance of at least one prototypic agoraphobic situation (n=6

The validity and clinical utility of post-traumatic stress disorder in Afghanistan.

Primary Hodgkin lymphoma of the gastrointestinal tract is an uncommon malignancy with few reported cases. Here we describe a rare variant of Hodgkin lymphoma presented in the gastrointestinal tract in association with Crohn's Disease. The patient is a 58 year old male with a 40 year history of formerly well-controlled Crohn's disease who presented with abdominal discomfort and constitutional symptoms. Computed tomography showed a 10 cm thickened segment of ileum and a dilated segment of small bowel. The patient underwent segmental resection, revealing a mass, which was diagnosed by pathology as

The psychotomimetic states inventory (PSI): measuring psychotic-type experiences from ketamine and cannabis.

BACKGROUND: This study reports a new measure of psychotomimetic states in the context of cannabis and ketamine use. The Psychotomimetic States Inventory (PSI) has sub-scales of Delusory Thinking, Perceptual Distortions, Cognitive Disorganization, Anhedonia, Mania and Paranoia. METHODS: The PSI was administered in two independent group, repeated measures designs: an experimental study of ketamine and a naturalistic study of cannabis. RESULTS: Both cannabis and ketamine produced reliable increases in ratings of psychotomimetic state effects across several sub-scales. CONCLUSIONS: The PSI is a

[Evaluation of perturbed body image in eating disorders using the Body Shape Questionnaire].

INTRODUCTION: Eating disorders are characterized by severe disturbance in eating behavior. A disturbance in perception of body shape and weight is an essential feature of both anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). Eating disorder patients demonstrate the same characteristic attitude about body image, such as fear of fatness or pursuit of thinness. BACKGROUND: Moreover, perturbed body image is a common diagnostic category of anorexia and bulimia (DSM-IV-TR, CIM-10). Cooper et al. [Int J Eat Disord 6 (1987) 485-94] developed a one-dimensional, 34 items questionnaire in order to measur

[Impact of music therapy on anxiety and depression for patients with Alzheimer's disease and on the burden felt by the main caregiver (feasibility study)].

INTRODUCTION: The impact of music therapy on dementia care for patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) is well-recognized. Music alters the different components of the disease through sensory, cognitive, emotional, behavioral and social impacts. The academic aspect of music therapy in this area was based on the fact that music can alter the various components of the overall evolution of this disease. We found around 10 case studies presenting various results from receptive music therapy sessions on patients with Alzheimer's disease. The results of these studies point out the interest of music t

Comorbid depression, but not comorbid anxiety disorders, predicts poor outcome in anxiety disorders.

Influence of type of comorbidity was studied over the course of 1 year in a sample of 141 outpatients with panic disorder with or without agoraphobia and generalized anxiety disorder, who were receiving different forms of cognitive behavior therapy. Influence of type of comorbidity was determined on the basis of change scores (linear regression analysis) and remission data (Kaplan-Meier survival analysis). Three categories, as assessed at baseline, were compared: no comorbidity, comorbidity among anxiety disorders, and comorbidity with mood disorders. Primary outcome variable: State-Trait Anxi

Refining the tobacco dependence phenotype using the Wisconsin Inventory of Smoking Dependence Motives.

The construct of tobacco dependence is important from both scientific and public health perspectives, but it is poorly understood. The current research integrates person-centered analyses (e.g., latent profile analysis) and variable-centered analyses (e.g., exploratory factor analysis) to clarify the latent structure of nicotine dependence and to guide distillation of the phenotype. Using data from 4 samples of smokers, latent profiles were derived using the Wisconsin Inventory of Smoking Dependence Motives subscale scores. Across all 4 samples, results revealed a unique latent profile that ha

Does antenatal screening for psychosocial risk factors predict postnatal depression? A follow-up study of 154 women in Adelaide, South Australia.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effectiveness of antenatal screening for psychosocial risk factors in predicting postnatal depression, in women living in a socioeconomically deprived area. METHOD: 154 women completed the Antenatal Psychosocial Questionnaire (APQ) and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Logistic regression analysis was used to identify antenatal psychosocial risk factors predictive of EPDS caseness, with an EPDS score of 10 or more being taken to indicate depression. RESULTS: Antenatal depression was more common than postnatal depression. 44 women (30%) me

The frequency of the psychiatric symptoms in the patients with dyspepsia at a university hospital.

OBJECTIVE: According to the psychiatric hypothesis, the symptoms of dyspepsia may be due to depression, anxiety or a somatization disorder. We investigated the frequency of psychiatric symptoms in patients undergoing endoscopic procedures with dyspepsia, either with or without pathological findings, and compared this with control subjects without dyspeptic symptoms. METHODS: Ninety patients with dyspeptic symptoms and 90 control subjects participated in the study. Both the patients and the controls were asked to complete a questionnaire about socio-demographic characteristics, the Turkish ver

Effect of parathyroidectomy on quality of life and neuropsychological symptoms in primary hyperparathyroidism.

Neuropsychological symptoms are found in a certain number of patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). Preoperative and postoperative quality of life, anxiety, and depression are measured to analyze the impact of parathyroidectomy on these symptoms. In this prospective study, 66 patients underwent parathyroidectomy for PHPT and were evaluated pre- and postoperatively with two validated psychometric instruments (HADS, PHQ-9). Health-related quality of life was measured with a 12-item short-form health survey (SF-12). Preoperatively, the median physical component score (SF-12) of 43.0 an

A double-blind study of the efficacy of venlafaxine extended-release, paroxetine, and placebo in the treatment of panic disorder.

To date, no large-scale, controlled trial comparing a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor with placebo for the treatment of panic disorder has been reported. This double-blind study compares the efficacy of venlafaxine extended-release (ER) and paroxetine with placebo. A total of 664 nondepressed adult outpatients who met DSM-IV criteria for panic disorder (with or without agoraphobia) were randomly assigned to 12 weeks of treatment with placebo or fixed-dose venlafaxine ER (75 mg/day or 150 mg/day), or paroxetine 40 mg/day. Optimism, social support and psychosocial functioning among women with breast cancer.

Personality, psychosocial, demographic and medical variables have been identified as correlates of adjustment to breast cancer and quality of life (QoL). Most studies have examined relationships between personality, social support and adjustment to cancer in predominantly middle-class Caucasian samples, thus limiting the generalizability of their findings. Eighty-one female outpatients at a medical oncology breast clinic in a county general hospital serving primarily indigent Hispanic and African-American patients completed measures assessing demographic and medical information, health-related

Specificity of cognitive structure in depression and social phobia: a comparison of interpersonal and achievement content.

BACKGROUND: The comorbidity between the mood and anxiety is extensive and it is probable that individuals with these disorders share a number of cognitive characteristics. However, comorbidity rates with depression are not uniform among the various anxiety disorders. This study examined the common and distinguishing features of self-schematic structure in major depressive disorder and social anxiety compared to other anxiety disorders in general and to no psychiatric disturbance. METHODS: Participants completed the Psychological Distance Scaling Task, which provided an index of the cognitive
