Self-reports of memory problems in relatives of patients with probable Alzheimer's disease.

This study examined the relationship between subjective memory complaints and performance on tests of memory by relatives of patients with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) and by older adults without a family history of dementia. Relatives of AD patients did not differ significantly from controls either in level of complaint or in performance on neuropsychological tests. However, among relatives of patients with early-onset AD, significant correlations were found between performance on memory tests and self-rated changes in everyday memory. These findings raise the possibility that relatives

Comparison of susceptibility to motion sickness during rotation at 30 rpm in the earth-horizontal, 10 degrees head-up, and 10 degrees head-down positions.

Normal persons rotated about an Earth-horizontal axis vary in their susceptibility to motion sickness. The purpose of this experiment was to measure, intraindividual differences in susceptibility in 12 subjects when rotated 10 degrees head up and 10 degrees head down as well as in the horizontal position. Subjects assumed the test-position 60 min prior to rotation, thus providing an opportunity for translocation of body fluids. Physiological and psychophysical measurements were conducted throughout the experiment. There were no intraindividual differences in susceptibility to motion sickness i

Exploring Transdiagnostic Mechanisms Linking Borderline Personality Disorder and Disordered Eating.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) frequently co-occurs with eating disorders (EDs). Disordered eating may serve as a coping strategy to regulate emotions/manage rejection sensitivity, abandonment fears, shame, and self-disgust. Research examining disordered eating in BPD remains limited. This study explored ED pathology/related psychological constructs in adults diagnosed with BPD. Eighty participants completed questionnaires assessing BPD symptom severity, ED pathology, childhood trauma, cognitive distortions, shame, self-disgust, coping, personality traits, and emotion regulation. Mean-c

Borderline personality mediates the link between attachment insecurities and subjective working memory deficits: The role of pre-emptive and post-emptive strategies.

Individuals with attachment insecurities, particularly attachment anxiety, often report subjective working memory deficits (SWMD). However, the psychological mechanisms underlying this relationship remain poorly understood. In this project, we propose that borderline personality disorder (BPD) features help explain this link. We tested this model across three studies, including one preregistered study, conducted with Russian, Turkish, and Polish samples. In Study 1, both attachment anxiety and avoidance predicted SWMD, with the former effect being stronger than the latter. The indirect effects

Personality traits modulate temporal dynamics and cross-system coordination of acute stress responses in virtual reality.

Acute stress is a primary risk factor for mental disorders. While prior virtual reality (VR) studies have utilized objective physiological measures to address biological heterogeneity, the specific temporal evolution and cross-system coordination of these responses remain less explored. To address this gap, we developed a multi-scenario virtual reality (VR) stress paradigm, and analyzed personality modulation of stress response dynamics in 44 healthy adults via high-density monitoring (continuous heart rate/heart rate variability/galvanic skin response; 9-timepoint cortisol sampling). The VR p

Driver engagement in partial driving automation: Mediating pathways of personality and driving style through trust in the intention pathway.

OBJECTIVES: To examine how trust influences intention to use partial driving automation through TAM beliefs, and to examine how personality traits and driving styles influence trust and intention indirectly through these mechanisms. These mechanisms are relevant to safe engagement and traffic injury prevention by reducing misuse and disuse of partial automation. METHODS: An offline, in-person survey was conducted in Korean with 600 licensed drivers who had experience using commercially available SAE Level 2 or Level 3 functions. A latent-variable structural equation model tested the hypothesi

Influence of shy and bold zebrafish personalities on colonization and olfactory responses in sertraline-contaminated environments.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as sertraline are used as antidepressants to treat mental disorders such as depression by blocking serotonin reuptake and thus maintaining high serotonin levels. Currently, increased consumption has led to detection of SSRIs in aquatic systems; however, information about their effects on exposed organisms is limited. This study investigated differences in the colonization response by zebrafish (Danio rerio) to sertraline-contaminated environments considering personality traits (shy and bold). Colonization was assessed in terms of success, ef

Novel prediction nomogram model for recurrent/persistent disease versus the American thyroid association recurrence risk stratification in patients with N1b papillary thyroid cancer: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most prevalent endocrine malignancy globally with a recurrence rate of up to 30%. Patients with lateral cervical metastasis (N1b PTC) are at a higher risk for reoperation. The aim of this study was to achieve a personalized assessment of recurrence risk in patients with N1b papillary thyroid carcinoma to better guide recurrence risk management. METHODS: This retrospective study included 558 patients with stage N1b papillary thyroid carcinoma. Independent risk factors for recurrence were identified using least absolute shrinkage and selectio

Longstanding eating disorders: insights and innovations in severe and enduring illness.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review synthesizes recent findings on recent developments in the understanding and treatment of longstanding eating disorders (L-ED). RECENT FINDINGS: Following a systematic search 42 papers were identified that included 5 scoping or systematic reviews. The majority were about phenomenology and treatment. Co-design and perspectives of people with lived experience expertise were common. Research on conceptualization suggests some consistency that duration is a necessary but insufficient defining feature, and to broaden from a symptom focus to the inter- and intra-person

Exploring the associations between the Morningness-Eveningness-Stability-Scale improved (MESSi) and the higher-order personality factors.

Morningness-eveningness refers to individual differences in the sleep-wake cycle. Research indicates that morningness-eveningness is associated with the Big Five (neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, conscientiousness) and the Big Two (alpha-stability, beta-plasticity) personality factors. However, the latter has not yet been tested within the multidimensional approach to morningness-eveningness. In the present study, we have adapted the Morningness-Eveningness-Stability-Scale improved (MESSi) to Polish (https://osf.io/rcxb5) to explore the associations between its

Behaviour regulation and the role of mental health in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become the most common cause of chronic liver disease in wealthy societies, and is responsible for a significant rise in liver morbidity and mortality. Current treatments prioritise lifestyle interventions, predominantly diet and exercise management, but patients frequently fail to make the necessary behavioural adjustments. The current study seeks to identify those factors which influence patients' behaviour with respect to adherence to treatment regimes. METHODS: Novel areas of interest were investigated; locus of control, b

Situational factors shape moral judgements in the trolley dilemma in Eastern, Southern and Western countries in a culturally diverse sample.

The study of moral judgements often centres on moral dilemmas in which options consistent with deontological perspectives (that is, emphasizing rules, individual rights and duties) are in conflict with options consistent with utilitarian judgements (that is, following the greater good based on consequences). Greene et al. (2009) showed that psychological and situational factors (for example, the intent of the agent or the presence of physical contact between the agent and the victim) can play an important role in moral dilemma judgements (for example, the trolley problem). Our knowledge is lim

A Residual Movement Classification Based User Interface for Control of Assistive Devices by Persons With Complete Tetraplegia.

OBJECTIVE: Complete tetraplegia can deprive a person of hand function. Assistive technologies may improve autonomy but needs for ergonomic interfaces for the user to pilot these devices still persist. Despite the paralysis of their arms, people with tetraplegia may retain residual shoulder movements. In this work we explored these movements as a mean to control assistive devices. METHODS: We captured shoulder movement with a single inertial sensor and, by training a support vector machine based classifier, we decode such information into user intent. RESULTS: The setup and training process t

Look at me: The relation between empathy and fixation on the emotional eye-region in low vs. high social anxiety.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Fixation on another person's eye-region may be an effective measure of one's level of empathy. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that this type of empathy measure may not be appropriate for individuals with high levels of social anxiety, since avoidance or hypervigilance attentional biases towards emotional faces are frequent in this condition. METHODS: Using eye-tracking, we measured fixation time on the eye-region of another person in participants with low vs. high social anxiety, and we correlated this measure with empathy levels. In a second eye-tra

Tempting fate: Chasing and maladaptive personality traits in gambling behavior.

Chasing, or continuing to gamble in an attempt to recoup losses, is a salient feature of problematic gambling. This study, which controlled for gambling severity and alcohol consumption, investigated the association between chasing and maladaptive personality trait domains among habitual gamblers. Participants comprised 126 adult habitual gamblers (73% males) aged between 18 and 69 years. They were administered the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS), the Personality Inventory for DSM-5-Brief Form (PID-5-BF), the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), and a computerized task develope

High Mortality and Coinfection in a Prospective Cohort of Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome Patients with Histoplasmosis in Guatemala.

Histoplasmosis is one of the most common and deadly opportunistic infections among persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immune deficiency syndrome in Latin America, but due to limited diagnostic capacity in this region, few data on the burden and clinical characteristics of this disease exist. Between 2005 and 2009, we enrolled patients ≥ 18 years of age with suspected histoplasmosis at a hospital-based HIV clinic in Guatemala City. A case of suspected histoplasmosis was defined as a person presenting with at least three of five clinical or radiologic criteria. A con

Personal Control and Service Connection as Paths to Improved Mental Health and Exiting Homelessness among Severely Marginalized Homeless Youth.

OBJECTIVE: Non-service connected, continuously homeless youth are arguably one of the most vulnerable populations in the U.S. These youth reside at society's margins experiencing an accumulation of risks over time. Research concludes that as vulnerabilities increase so do poor long-term outcomes. This study tested the mediating effects of service connection and personal control as mediators of cumulative risk and housing, health and mental health outcomes. By understanding the processes associated with therapeutic change among those with the most vulnerabilities, service providers and research

Development and evaluation of an ultrasonic personal aerosol sampler.

Assessing personal exposure to air pollution has long proven challenging due to technological limitations posed by the samplers themselves. Historically, wearable aerosol monitors have proven to be expensive, noisy, and burdensome. The objective of this work was to develop a new type of wearable monitor, an ultrasonic personal aerosol sampler (UPAS), to overcome many of the technological limitations in personal exposure assessment. The UPAS is a time-integrated monitor that features a novel micropump that is virtually silent during operation. A suite of onboard environmental sensors integrated

Breastfeeding and Adult Personality.

Five Factor Model (FFM) personality traits are implicated in long-term health-risk behaviors and outcomes. Less research has addressed how early-life experiences are associated with individual differences in these traits in adulthood. We examine whether having been breastfed is associated with adult personality and well-being in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. At Wave 1, caregivers reported whether the target child had been breastfed. At Wave 4, participants (N=13,113; 53% female; Mage=28.98) completed measures of psychological functioning. We tested for mean-lev
