Bietti's crystalline corneal-retinal dystrophy is characterized by deposits of crystals in the marginal cornea and the paracentral and peripapillary retina. To date, only three cases with long term follow-up have been reported. The case of another patient, who has been observed for 16 years, is reported here. The most striking morphologic feature during the period of examination was the diminution of the retinal crystals, an optical phenomenon that appears to be due to the advanced atrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium. To investigate the potentially harmful effects of laser photocoagulation in the papillomacular bundle (PMB), the records of patients treated for idiopathic neovascular membranes or membranes secondary to histoplasmosis extending into the PMB were reviewed. Six cases of scleral buckle infections due to atypical mycobacteria were studied to determine their clinical and microbiologic features and the response of these infections to treatment. All infections were treated with exoplant removal and administration of a variety of antibiotics. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), an inert polymer that forms a viscoelastic solution in aqueous media, is useful for anterior segment surgery. A 2.2% solution of HPMC (MW 86,000 daltons) of 6,000 centistokes viscosity was evaluated as a vitreous substitute in rabbit eyes. The authors report an unusual sporadic case of bilateral posterior microphthalmos in an 8-year-old Chinese girl. Cycloplegic refraction showed hyperopia of 12.5 diopters in both eyes. Anterior segment examination showed normal corneal diameters, open angles, and normal lens thicknesses. Ultrasonography showed short vitreous compartments resulting in short axial lengths of 17.2 mm. Fundoscopy showed full-thickness macular holes associated with radiate retinal striae. This is the first report of bilateral macular hole formation in sporadic posterior microphthalmos. To evaluate pluronic polyol F-127 (PF-127) as a vitreous substitute and an intraocular drug delivery system, a total vitrectomy was performed on 18 New Zealand rabbits (18 eyes). We report the successful treatment of three cases of traumatic ruptures of the globe complicated by massive choroidal hemorrhage, uveal prolapse and retinal detachment.
