Antipsychotic drug use in older adults.

The pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, drug interactions, adverse effects, indications for use, efficacy, dosage, and pattern of use of antipsy … lines specify that antipsychotics should not be used in this population if the only indication is a problem behavior like wandering. Although antipsychotics are often prescribed for behavioral control in older adults, most studies show only modest efficacy, while some show worsening of symptoms. As-needed orders for antipsychotics are controversial. Antipsychotics …

Identifying Subtypes of Cannabis Use Disorder: A Latent Class Analysis Among Daily Cannabis Consumers and Associated Sociodemographic and Cannabis Characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis use disorder (CUD) is relatively common among daily cannabis consumers; however, no studies have explored subtypes of CUD based on updated DSM-5 CUD criteria among daily consumers. Our study fills this gap and explores differences between subtypes in sociodemographic and cannabis correlates. METHODS: US adults aged 18 years or older were recruited from social media (February to April 2022) to complete an online survey including sociodemographic characteristics (e.g., age, sex, reason for cannabis use), cannabis use behaviors, and DSM-5 CUD criteria. Latent class analyses

The high societal costs of childhood conduct problems: evidence from administrative records up to age 38 in a longitudinal birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Children with conduct problems that persist into adulthood are at increased risk for future behavioral, health, and social problems. However, the longer term public service usage among these children has not been fully documented. To aid public health and intervention planning, adult service usage across criminal justice, health care, and social welfare domains is compared among all individuals from a representative cohort who followed different conduct problem trajectories from childhood into adulthood. METHODS: Participants are from the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Devel

Parental depressive and anxiety symptoms during pregnancy and attention problems in children: a cross-cohort consistency study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal depression and anxiety during pregnancy have been associated with offspring-attention deficit problems. AIM: We explored possible intrauterine effects by comparing maternal and paternal symptoms during pregnancy, by investigating cross-cohort consistency, and by investigating whether parental symptoms in early childhood may explain any observed intrauterine effect. METHODS: This study was conducted in two cohorts (Generation R, n = 2,280 and ALSPAC, n = 3,442). Pregnant women and their partners completed questionnaires to assess symptoms of depression and anxiety. Child

Perceived stigma mediates the relationship between regional gray matter volume and aggressive behavior in children affected by parental HIV/AIDS.

Perceived stigma, the subjective awareness of prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination against persons living with HIV and their children, is a recognized predictor of behavioral problems. However, the neurobiological basis underlying perceived stigma and its role in influencing aggressive behavior at neural level in children affected by parental HIV/AIDS remain largely unclear. In this study, 112 participants aged 10-17 years from a large neurobiological project were extracted for gray matter volume (GMV) in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and medial temporal lobe (MTL). The results revealed a

The impact of fintech development on the entrepreneurial behavior of farmers: evidence from the China Household Finance Survey.

Fintech is disrupting the traditional financial models with the power of technology. Will it solve the problems faced by farmers in starting their own businesses and stimulate the vitality of rural entrepreneurship? In this paper, we focus on the impact of fintech development on the entrepreneurial behavior of farmers in China. First, we theoretically analyze the effects of fintech development on the entrepreneurial behavior of farmers and put forward the corresponding theoretical hypotheses. Second, using data from Baidu search index and the China Household Finance Survey (CHFS), we employ a

Determinants of informal care time, distress, depression, and quality of life in care partners along the trajectory of Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: We evaluated determinants associated with care partner outcomes along the Alzheimer's disease (AD) stages. METHODS: We included n = 270 care partners of amyloid-positive patients in the pre-dementia and dementia stages of AD. Using linear regression analysis, we examined determinants of four care partner outcomes: informal care time, caregiver distress, depression, and quality of life (QoL). RESULTS: More behavioral symptoms and functional impairment in patients were associated with more informal care time and depressive symptoms in care partners. More behavioral symptoms were

Emotional behavior and brain anatomy of the mdx52 mouse model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

The exon-52-deleted mdx52 mouse is a critical model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), as it features a deletion in a hotspot region of the DMD gene, frequently mutated in patients. Deletion of exon 52 impedes expression of several brain dystrophins (Dp427, Dp260 and Dp140), thus providing a key model for studying the cognitive impairment associated with DMD and testing rescuing strategies. Here, using in vivo magnetic resonance imaging and neurohistology, we found no gross brain abnormalities in mdx52 mice, suggesting that the neural dysfunctions in this model are likely at the level of br

Syndemic Vulnerability and Condomless Sex Among Incarcerated Men in Mexico City: A Latent Class Analysis.

In order to address common statistical and population-based limitations in epidemiological literature applying syndemic theory, this study uses latent class analysis (LCA) to explore how health and social problems coalesce and shape sexual risk behaviors linked to HIV transmission in three Mexico City prisons. Among the studied male inmates, LCA identified four classes, defined by low syndemic risk (61.4%); marijuana (14.3%); depression, substances, and trauma (19.7%); and depression, substances, and marijuana (4.7%). In multinomial regression models, classes with a greater number of syndemic

The Unequal Consequences of Mass Incarceration for Children.

A growing literature has documented the mostly deleterious intergenerational consequences of paternal incarceration, but less research has considered heterogeneity in these relationships. In this article, I use data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 3,065) to estimate the heterogeneous relationship between paternal incarceration and children's problem behaviors (internalizing behaviors, externalizing behaviors, and early juvenile delinquency) and cognitive skills (reading comprehension, math comprehension, and verbal ability) in middle childhood. Taking into account chil…

Managing the Concealable Stigma of Criminal Justice System Involvement: A Longitudinal Examination of Anticipated Stigma, Social Withdrawal, and Post-Release Adjustment.

People with concealable stigmatized identities, such as a criminal record, often anticipate stigma from others. Anticipated stigma is thought to cause withdrawal from situations in which there is the potential for discrimination, which then negatively impacts behavior and functioning. This may have implications for offenders reentering the community, possibly hindering community integration and encouraging maladaptive behavior postrelease. Drawing upon a sample of 197 male jail inmates, we examine a theoretical model in which anticipated stigma during incarceration predicts behavioral outcomes

Is emotional dysregulation a risk indicator for auto-aggression behaviors in adolescents with oppositional defiant disorder?

BACKGROUND: The Child Behavior Checklist Dysregulation Profile (CBCL-DP), (high scores in Anxious/Depressed, Attention Problems, and Aggressive Behavior subscales), has been related to poor emotional and behavioral self-regulation in children and adolescents. Our aim is to evaluate if it may be associated with auto-aggression in youth with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Method In 72 consecutively referred youths with ODD, emotional dysregulation was assessed with the CBCL-DP, auto-aggression and physical aggression against other persons with the Modified Overt Aggression Scale. RESULTS:

Coparenting Problems with Toddlers Predict Children's Symptoms of Psychological Problems at Age 7.

This study examined whether coparenting during toddlerhood predicts children's later symptoms of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, affective disorder, and somatic complaints. When children were 2 years old, 108 middle-class nonclinical families were observed in triadic interactions to assess two domains of dyadic coparenting (competitive and cooperative), as well as each parent's individual competitive behavior toward the spouse. Teachers and mothers reported children's symptoms of psychological problems at age 7. Independent of cooperative coparenting an

Linking extremely low birth weight and internalizing behaviors in adult survivors: Influences of neuroendocrine dysregulation.

Young adult survivors of extremely low birth weight (ELBW; <1000 g) are known to be at elevated risk for internalizing problems, though little is known about the mechanisms that may lead to higher levels of psychopathology in this vulnerable group. We examined the moderating influence of neuroendocrine functioning on the link between being born at ELBW and internalizing behaviors at age 30-35. Salivary cortisol was collected 20 min after completion of a social stress task in 83 ELBW adult survivors and 89 normal birth weight (NBW; >2500 g) controls. Using a median split, participants were sepa

Distal 10q monosomy: new evidence for a neurobehavioral condition?

Pure distal monosomy of the long arm of chromosome 10 is a rare cytogenetic abnormality. The location and size of the deletions described in this region are variable. Nevertheless, the patients share characteristic facial appearance, variable cognitive impairment and neurobehavioral manifestations. A Minimal Critical Region corresponding to a 600 kb Smallest Region of deletion Overlap (SRO) has been proposed. In this report, we describe four patients with a distal 10q26 deletion, who displayed attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders (ADHD). One of them had a marked behavioral profile and rel

Salivary gonadal and adrenal hormone differences in boys and girls with and without disruptive behavior disorders: Contextual variants.

Hormone differences by psychopathology group and gender may have implications for understanding disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs) and complexities of treatment outcomes. Current theoretical models emphasize contextual differences as moderators of hormone-behavior relations. This baseline report examined: (a) hormone differences in youth with and without DBD, and (b) contextual factors as moderators of behavior problems and hormones. 180 children and adolescents were enrolled (141 boys, mean 9.0+/-1.7 years). DBD participants met criteria for conduct disorder (CD) and/or oppositional defiant

Predictive validity of the Structured Assessment of Violence Risk in Youth (SAVRY) during residential treatment.

This prospective study examines the predictive validity of the Dutch version of the Structured Assessment of Violence Risk in Youth (SAVRY) by examining relationships between SAVRY scores and various types of disruptive behavior during residential treatment. The SAVRY, a risk assessment instrument, was coded for 66 male adolescents on the basis of file information and interviews. The adolescents were referred to Rentray, a juvenile correctional and treatment facility, by the Dutch juvenile courts because of severe behavioral problems or serious offenses.
