Knowledge, attitudes, and practices on injection site complications among small ruminant animal health providers in Kumasi, Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Injection-site complications are a poorly recognised problem in small ruminant production in Ghana. The improper injection can lead to tissue damage, abscesses, fibrosis, drug residues, lower meat quality and carcass condemnation, which can cause economic and public health issues. Veterinarians are legally qualified to give injections, but in practice, para-veterinarians and animal herders often do so, as they are in close contact with livestock and are often responsible for immediate animal care. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge, attitudes and practices of anima

The National Allergy Centre of Excellence-Addressing Australia's Allergy Burden.

Australia has one of the highest rates of food allergy, anaphylaxis hospital admissions and anaphylaxis fatalities worldwide. These trends and sustained advocacy prompted a 2019 Parliamentary Inquiry into Allergies and Anaphylaxis. Among 250 submissions, the Centre for Food Allergy Research called for a national research-coordinating centre and comprehensive allergy research funding. In response to the inquiry, the Australian Government funded the National Allergy Centre of Excellence (NACE) in 2022, and its partner organisation, the National Allergy Council (NAC), to improve health, save live

Strengthening Care for Rural Children (SC4RC): study protocol for a stepped-wedge translational trial of an integrated general practitioner-paediatrician model of primary care in regional Victoria and New South Wales.

BACKGROUND: Children living in regional and rural Australia have diminished health outcomes and are more likely to be developmentally vulnerable on one or more domains compared to urban peers. Despite this, children in regional and rural Australia often cannot access specialist care due to lack of availability, financial constraints, or waiting times of over 12 months. Strengthening Care for Rural Children (SC4RC) aims to evaluate an integrated general practitioner (GP)-paediatrician model of care in rural communities to enhance the quality of paediatric care by ensuring children receive timel

Assessing differences in contraceptive provision through telemedicine among reproductive health providers during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Providers faced challenges in maintaining patient access to contraceptive services and public health safety during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to increased barriers to care, providers increasingly used telemedicine for contraceptive care, curbside services, mail-order pharmacies, and on-line or home delivery of contraceptive methods, including self-administration of subcutaneous depo medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA-SQ). To better understand how reproductive health providers adapted service provision during the pandemic, this study assessed clinical practice changes and strategies

Two-Eyed Seeing and other Indigenous perspectives for neuroscience.

The integration of Indigenous perspectives and knowledge with biomedical approaches in neurosciences can significantly broaden the understanding of the human brain and mind. Drawing upon the writings of Elders in Canada, we refer to this integration as Two-Eyed Seeing or Etuaptmumk. We discuss how Two-Eyed Seeing and other dual perspectives can bring both breadth of knowledge and humility to the development of research and clinical practices for brain health. In this forward-looking discussion, we include both traditional academic and non-academic traditions and the work of Indigenous scholars

Impact of Health Education Interventions for Control of Taenia solium Cysticercosis/Taeniasis in Endemic Countries: A Systematic Review.

Despite some control efforts, Taenia solium cysticercosis/taeniasis (TSCT) remains widespread in many low-income countries across sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and Asia. With increased global interaction, the risk of infection also rises in high-income countries (HICs) and middle-income countries (MICs). Community knowledge and awareness are crucial to influence behavioural change and thus aid in controlling the parasite. This systematic review examined the effectiveness of health education interventions in managing TSCT to inform future disease control strategies. Papers published up to J

Resurgent Syphilis Across the Globe: A Public Health Perspective on Bridging Surveillance and Strategy.

Syphilis, a curable sexually transmitted infection, has resurged globally, challenging public health systems in both high-income countries and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In nations like the United States, the United Kingdom, parts of Europe, Canada, and Japan, cases have surged due to declining condom use, digital platforms facilitating casual sex, and practices like chemsex and broader drug use for sex, with rising congenital syphilis rates. In LMICs, such as those in East Africa, South Asia, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, limited healthcare access, inadequate prenatal scre

Causes of mortality in backyard poultry in eight states in the United States.

A comprehensive understanding of common diseases of backyard poultry flocks is important to providing poultry health information to flock owners, veterinarians, and animal health officials. We collected autopsy reports over a 3-y period (2015-2017) from diagnostic laboratories in 8 states in the United States; 2,509 reports were collected, involving autopsies of 2,687 birds. The primary cause of mortality was categorized as infectious, noninfectious, neoplasia or lymphoproliferative disease, or undetermined.
