The records of 2,000 consecutive patients who had been examined by auscultation, phonocardiography (PCG), two-dimensional echocardiography and pulsed Doppler echocardiography (PDE) were reviewed to assess the clinical significance of apical systolic murmurs which cease well before the aortic closure sound. This report deals with the non-invasive detection of haemodynamically non-significant stenoses of the intracranial part of the vertebrobasilar system. A new Doppler device transmitting pulsed 2 MHz ultrasound was used. Among 67 patients with transient or stable neurological deficits of the posterior circulation area, five were found to have stenoses of the distal vertebral artery or basilar artery, respectively. A preliminary study of 15 patients with ventricular septal defect demonstrates that Echo-Doppler velocimetry allows the non-invasive diagnosis of this malformation in 80% of the cases, as well as its localisation and detection of associated lesions; tin addition evaluation of the shunt is made feasible by non invasive recording of the flow velocity curves of the shunt and of the pulmonary artery according to a technique derived from the basic one. This method turns out to be essential for establishing the aetiological diagnosis of left parasternal systolic murmurs.

The aim of this study was to determine the accuracy of range gated pulsed Doppler (RGPD) echocardiography for detecting obstruction to the pulmonary outflow tract in children with d-transposition of the great vessels (d-TGV).
