[Update on ureteral reconstruction 2024].

Ureteral strictures can occur along the entire course of the ureter and have many different causes. Factors involved in the development include, among other things, congenital anomalies, iatrogenic injuries during endoscopic as well as open or minimally invasive visceral surgical, gynecological, and urological procedures as well as prior radiation therapy. Planning treatment for ureteral strictures requires a detailed assessment of stricture and patient characteristics. Given the various options for ureteral reconstruction, various methods must be considered for each patient. Short-segment pro

Oxymatrine boosts hematopoietic regeneration by modulating MAPK/ERK phosphorylation after irradiation-induced hematopoietic injury.

Hematopoietic toxicity due to ionizing radiation (IR) is a leading cause of death in nuclear incidents, occupational hazards, and cancer therapy. Oxymatrine (OM), an extract originating from the root of Sophora flavescens (Kushen), possesses extensive pharmacological properties. In this study, we demonstrate that OM treatment accelerates hematological recovery and increases the survival rate of mice subjected to irradiation. This outcome is accompanied by an increase in functional hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), resulting in enhanced hematopoietic reconstitution abilities. Mechanistically, we

Hypodermic needle fixation without fluoroscopy versus k-wire fixation with fluoroscopy for distal phalangeal fractures: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Distal phalanx fractures are frequently encountered in our daily practice. They are often caused by crush injuries and are the most frequent work-related hand fractures. Different types of fixation have been proposed for displaced fractures. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on two fixation types. Twenty-four distal phalanx fractures were treated with k-wire fixation with fluoroscopic control in a main operating room setting. Twenty-five distal phalanx fractures were treated with hypodermic needle fixation without fluoroscopic control in an emergency treatment room sett

Creation of 3-Dimensional Life Size: Patient-Specific C1 Fracture Models for Screw Fixation.

BACKGROUND: Transarticular screw fixation has fatal complications such as vertebral artery (VA), carotid artery, and spinal cord injuries. The landmarks for deciding the entry point for C1 lateral mass screws were clarified by using life-size 3-dimensional (3D) patient-specific spine models. METHODS: This study included a total of 10 patients with C1 fractures. Dual-energy computed tomography (CT) scan data from C1 pre- and postscrewing were modified into 3D patient-specific life-size cervical spine models. The detailed information, such as bony and vascular elements, of 13 separate parameter

Imaging of Acute Conditions of the Perineum.

A wide range of acute conditions can affect the perineum, from self-limited disease to conditions that are potentially life threatening or contribute to substantial patient morbidity if not promptly diagnosed and appropriately treated. Imaging is essential in the clinical management of perineal disease because it allows accurate anatomic localization of the origin and extent of the disease to be determined. Familiarity with complex perineal anatomy, appropriate use of imaging modalities, and the spectrum of imaging findings seen in acute perineal conditions is crucial for radiologists to make

Reference ranges for serum S100B neuroprotein specific to infants under four months of age.

BACKGROUND: Minor head traumatisms are a common reason for consultation in paediatric emergency departments. The diagnosis of traumatic brain injuries involves performing a cranial computed tomography (CCT), associated with a risk of cancer due to the radiation. The serum S100B is an effective biomarker used to reduce reliance on CCT. While reference ranges have been determined, the limited number of cases regarding infants less than 4months of age has not allowed this biomarker to be used with this age group. Our study aimed to determine reference ranges for serum S100B based on a larger numb

Management of iatrogenic ureteral injury and techniques for ureteral reconstruction.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Ureteral reconstruction is still a sophisticated approach. Because of an increase in endoscopic procedures for kidney and ureteral stone treatment, radiation therapy and pelvic surgery, ureteral strictures are more frequently observed. Short proximal and distal strictures can be reconstructed by using the renal pelvis or urinary bladder. New techniques are needed for reconstruction of long strictures as well as those located in the middle ureter. RECENT FINDINGS: This article summarizes very recent studies from 2014, investigating new techniques and their functional outcome

Short-term treatment with a SOD/catalase mimetic, EUK-207, mitigates pneumonitis and fibrosis after single-dose total-body or whole-thoracic irradiation.

In the event of a radiological accident or terrorist attack, whole- or partial-body exposure can injure the lungs. To simulate such an incident, we used a single fraction of total-body irradiation (TBI) or whole-thoracic irradiation to induce pneumonitis or pulmonary fibrosis, respectively, in a rat model. The superoxide dismutase and catalase mimetic EUK-207 was given by subcutaneous injection (20 mg/kg/day, 5 days per week, once daily) starting at 7 days after irradiation and stopping before pneumonitis developed. After TBI, morbidity and the increase in breathing rates associated with pneum

Therapeutic effect of linac-based stereotactic radiotherapy with a micro-multileaf collimator for the treatment of patients with brain metastases from lung cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of hypofractionated linac-based stereotactic radiotherapy with a micro-multileaf collimator (mMLC) in lung cancer patients with brain metastases. METHODS: Seventy-eight lesions of brain metastases in 49 lung cancer patients treated by stereotactic radiotherapy between September 2003 and December 2006 were analyzed. In the treatment planning, the planning target volume (PTV) was defined as an enhanced lesion plus 3 mm margin. A total dose of 39-42 Gy in three fractions was delivered to the isocenters of the PTV. RESULTS: The median survival time after stereot

Arthroscopic-assisted reduction and percutaneous external fixation of lateral condyle fractures of the humerus.

Lateral condyle fractures in children are the second most common fracture about the elbow. Anatomic reduction of intra-articular displacement is considered a priority. Most experts agree that the treatment of choice of mildly displaced (>2 mm) lateral condyle fractures is open reduction-internal fixation or intraoperative arthrography followed by closed reduction and percutaneous pinning. In this report we described an alternative approach using closed arthroscopic-assisted reduction. Arthroscopy was performed by use of a 30 degree, 4.5-mm arthroscope through a proximal anteromedial portal wit

PECARN prediction rule for cervical spine imaging of children presenting to the emergency department with blunt trauma: a multicentre prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Cervical spine injuries in children are uncommon but potentially devastating; however, indiscriminate neck imaging after trauma unnecessarily exposes children to ionising radiation. The aim of this study was to derive and validate a paediatric clinical prediction rule that can be incorporated into an algorithm to guide radiographic screening for cervical spine injury among children in the emergency department. METHODS: In this prospective observational cohort study, we screened children aged 0-17 years presenting with known or suspected blunt trauma at 18 specialised children's em

Metformin and butyrate attenuate chronic radiation proctitis by alleviating inflammation and macrophage senescence.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic radiation proctitis (RP) is characterized by persistent inflammation and impaired tissue repair. This study investigates the potential of a metformin-butyrate (MeBu) combination to modulate radiation-induced senescence-associated changes in macrophages to mitigate chronic injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: BALB/c mice received a 15 Gy fraction of rectal brachytherapy. From weeks 4 to 8 post-irradiation, mice were treated with rectal enemas of metformin, butyrate, or the MeBu combination. Tissue histology (H&E and Masson's Trichrome staining), macrophage polarization (iNOS/CD
