"World Traveler" addicts in Asia: II. Comparison with "Stay at home" addicts.

Demographic and clinical characteristics of "world traveler" addicts in Asia have been described in a previous paper. In order to understand more about this group, the 56 American and European addicts seen in Laos were compared to 100 American addicts from Minneapolis matched for age, sex, and year of admission to treatment. "World traveler" addicts tended to be older, better educated, and more apt to be single than this sample of "stay at home" addicts. In comparison to the latter, "travelers" began using narcotic drugs at an older age, became addicted more rapidly, and sought treatment earli

[Examinations with the modified VNPI].

The revised design of a psychometric procedure (VNPI) is described. Additional factors were extracted by intercorrelations and factor analysis: increased perseveration, inhibited contact, defective flexibility, instability of moods. They provide information, additionally to the evaluation of the factors of vegetative lability, neuroticism, and introversion. A random test in 360 persons from a screening series is used for the presentation of the relations between VNPI values and findings of social and internal medicine. The possibilities of individual diagnosis of the procedure are demonstrated

Depressive symptomatology and role function in a general population.

Depressive symptomatology, marital satisfaction and functioning, job satisfaction, and social relationships were investigated in 320 respondents comprising 160 married couples. Responses to the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale indicated that 13% of the respondents had scores similar to those obtained by patients with diagnosed depressions and an additional 27% had scores comparable to those of persons with other psychiatric problems. Responses to a variety of questions about the respondents' social life, job satisfaction, and marital function indicate that increased depressive symptomatology

Socioeconomic position and its effect on cardiovascular outcomes and mortality in patients with prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic position (SEP) is a fundamental social determinant of health (SDoH) contributing to observed disparities in cancer and cardiovascular (CV) care among individuals with prostate cancer (PC). Understanding the influence of SEP on CV health is essential for addressing outcome inequities within this population. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study utilizing Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)-Medicare to evaluate CV outcomes in patients ≥65 years with PC from 2009 to 2017. We studied the impact of SEP on cardiovascular events (CVEs), cardiovascular m

The color of health: how racism, segregation, and inequality affect the health and well-being of preterm infants and their families.

Racism, segregation, and inequality contribute to health outcomes and drive health disparities across the life course, including for newborn infants and their families. In this review, we address their effects on the health and well-being of newborn infants and their families with a focus on preterm birth. We discuss three causal pathways: increased risk; lower-quality care; and socioeconomic disadvantages that persist into infancy, childhood, and beyond. For each pathway, we propose specific interventions and research priorities that may remedy the adverse effects of racism, segregation, and

Child Maltreatment and Adult Living Standards at 50 Years.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Child maltreatment (abuse and neglect) has established effects on mental health. Less is known about its influence on adult economic circumstances. We aimed to establish associations of child maltreatment with such outcomes and explore potential pathways. METHODS: We used 1958 British birth cohort data (N = 8076) to examine associations of child neglect and abuse with adult (50 years) long-term sickness absence, not in employment, education or training (NEET), lacking assets, income-related support, poor qualifications, financial insecurity, manual social class, and

Movin' on Up: Socioeconomic Mobility and the Risk of Delivering a Small-for-Gestational Age Infant.

OBJECTIVE: Poor fetal growth is associated with increased rates of adverse health outcomes in children and adults. The social determinants of poor fetal growth are not well understood. Using multiple socioeconomic indicators measured at the individual level, this study examined changes in maternal socioeconomic position (SEP) from childhood to adulthood (socioeconomic mobility) in relation to poor fetal growth in offspring. METHODS: Data were from the Pregnancy Outcomes and Community Health Study (September 1998-June 2004) that enrolled women in mid-pregnancy from 52 clinics in five Michigan

"The second thing to hell is living under that bridge": narratives of women living with victimization, serious mental illness, and in homelessness.

The increasing rates of violence committed against homeless women living with serious mental illness (SMI) have been well documented. These increasing rates of violence need attention as they are a serious public health concern. The purpose of this qualitative study is to increase our understanding of victimization among this population as perceived by those who have lived the experience. The study sample consists of 15 homeless adult women who self-reported having been diagnosed with a SMI. The findings highlight the reality that, provided with the right type of resources, positive growth can

Efficacy of the trial-based thought record, a new cognitive therapy strategy designed to change core beliefs, in social phobia.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) often follows a chronic course and is associated with substantial impairment in functioning. Although results from clinical trials clearly establish evidence for efficacy of cognitive behavioural therapy in treating this disorder, up to 50% of patients with SAD show little or no improvement. Thus, new approaches that have promised in improving the efficacy of treatment for SAD are needed. One such approach is the trial-based thought record (TBTR), which targets the restructuring of patients' core beliefs. OBJECTIVE: To determine whet

A two-county comparison of the HOUSES index on predicting self-rated health.

BACKGROUND: Mortality, incidence of most diseases, and prevalence of adverse health behaviours follow an inverse gradient with social class. Many proxies for socioeconomic status (SES) exist; however, each bears a different relation to health outcomes, probably following a different aetiological pathway. Additionally, data on SES can be quite difficult to gather. Five measures of SES were compared, including a novel measure, the HOUSES index, in the prediction of self-rated health (SRH) in two Midwestern settings, Olmsted County, Minnesota, and Jackson County, Missouri. METHODS: Using a proba

Assesment of social support dimensions in patients with eating disorders.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study is to assess social support dimensions (providers, satisfaction and different support actions) in patients with eating disorders (ED), looking at diagnosis, socio-demographic and clinical characteristics, and self-concept. METHOD: A total of 98 female ED patients were recruited. The ages of participants ranged from 12 to 34 (Mean = 20.8-years-old, SD=5.61). Patients have a primary DSM-IV-R diagnosis of anorexia nervosa (61.2%), bulimia nervosa (27.6%) or an unspecified eating disorder (11.2%). Social support was assessed using the Escala de Apoyo Social Perci

Independent and mediated contributions of personality, coping, social support, and depressive symptoms to physical functioning outcome among patients in cardiac rehabilitation.

This study examined the direct and mediated contributions of psychosocial variables to posttreatment physical functioning among 142 patients receiving cardiac rehabilitation. Two models were proposed and tested. In the first model, psychosocial factors were correlated and made to predict baseline and 6-week physical functioning. The results showed that after controlling for age, illness severity, baseline physical functioning, and other psychosocial correlates, optimism and social support still significantly predicted better posttreatment physical functioning. In the second model, we explored

A two-year longitudinal study of poststroke mood disorders. In-hospital prognostic factors associated with six-month outcome.

In a prospective study of mood disorders in stroke patients, variables obtained during the acute hospitalization were examined for their relationship to outcome at either 3- or 6-month follow-up. Distance of the lesion on computerized axial tomography scan from the frontal pole in patients with left anterior infarcts was significantly associated with severity of depression at 3 and 6 months poststroke. In addition, intellectual and functional physical impairment in-hospital were significantly correlated with severity of depression and social functioning scores at 3 and 6 months poststroke. Thu

Assessing demographic and clinical characteristics and healthcare resource utilization of patients with schizophrenia with inadequate response to antipsychotic treatment.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness with substantial health, social, and economic impacts. Despite the use of antipsychotics as the standard treatment, many patients fail to achieve an adequate response. This study examined differences in demographics, social determinants of health, treatment patterns, and healthcare resource utilization across antipsychotic response groups. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used electronic health record (EHR) data from the University of Utah Health System (2017–2021). Patients aged 13 years or older with schizophrenia ICD codes and at

Health financing inequality in fragmented health systems: evidence from Mexico, 2000-2023.

BACKGROUND: Universal health coverage (UHC) depends, among other things, on fair and efficient public financing. In many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), fragmented health systems entrench inequalities by linking entitlements to employment status. In Mexico, persistent segmentation and institutional fragmentation have shaped the structure and distribution of public health financing, exemplifying this challenge through a dual public system that separates the population with social security from those without. While several policy reforms have sought to improve coverage and financial pr

Person-environment fit in aging in place: A digital support layer and inequalities in environmental satisfaction among urban empty-nest older adults in China.

Population aging and increasing intergenerational residential separation have made aging in place increasingly dependent on how older adults perceive the fit between themselves and their everyday living environments. Drawing on person-environment fit theory, this study situates smart technology within the broader environmental system and defines it as a distinct, independently measurable digital support layer. Using an exploratory sequential mixed-methods design, we examined environmental satisfaction among urban empty-nest older adults in China and identified social, functional, and contextua
